Fashion Is Fun

Are You Buying Uggs? Because…

the ugg boot.jpgAccording to WWD, the Ugg boot may be saving the holidays.

Apparently, “everybody” is still looking for them, and some stores are even reporting higher sales of the shoe marshmallow as compared to this time last year.

But my first thought was, “Really? Because I never see them.” Actually, that’s not true. I saw a pair yesterday, ending an outfit which consisted of a ripped denim miniskirt and layered tanks from Abercrombie, at the Key West airport.

So my question: Is this a regional thing? Because even though I still see Uggs in the city sometimes, they’re usually beat-up, stained, and relegated to Whole Foods shopping in the snow.

So please, if you’ve purchased a new pair of Uggs this year, tell us about it. Because we’re doing a highly scientific study here, in which we try to figure out where these purchases are coming from.

Answers in the comments section, if you’re curious, too.

I live near Toronto and every girl at my university wears Uggs. Walk across campus in the fall/winter and at least half the girls are wearing uggs. My campus isn't exactly fashion forward but the uggs trend definitely isn't dead with college girls.

However, in NY I see a zillion people wearing Hunter boots every day.

No, I don't even wear them when I'm actually thinking about what I'm putting on. I think that's why a lot of us on here hate UGG's so much because you have the girls who pair them with their Juicy Couture tank dresses in the summer time. Seriously? Why rag on them

1. Bloody comfortable
2. Keep your feet warm
3. Keep your feet dry
4. You can walk in them (some boots you can't)
5. Easy to put on

Do not knock it until you've tried it. There must be something about them if they're still around after all these years and going strong.

While I don't own a pair, it seems that every other girl on my campus does (and wears them constantly with an equally ubiquitous item of clothing-leggings). As much as I have been anti-Ugg for the last several years now (simply because I have always thought they were a bit on the ugly side and I think 130 bucks for ugly shoes is too much), I kind of want a pair...being back up in the North has definitely been a bit of a shock weather wise and it'd be nice to have my feet be warmer. Another note, the girls who wear them are more often than not from the northeast.

On a freezing cold snowy morning I get to work with my feet nice and warm and slip on whatever shoes I want to wear once I get to the office. They are warm and comfortable and safe to walk in. Having slipped and fallen several times while trying to wear more stylish boots, perhaps at my rapidly avancing age I have just gotten more practical. I think people only look foolish in Uggs if they truly think they look stylish in them. If you wear them for comfort during inclement weather, I see no problem.

If you go on Long Island, you will find plenty of young girls and their mothers wearing uggs with jeans or leggings. While they might be outdated and not very fashion forward they are a trend that people continuously follow. The Uggs that people are buying in the department stores are mostly for teenagers or moms who think they are teenagers. There are a few cute pairs that have fur on the outside and beads, but as a college student I must say they are great to throw on and run to class with. Also, they are a great christmas present because they are relatively "cheap" for boots that the kids will wear every day. The slippers also do very well because they are comfortable and can be worn outside.

target ballet flats. i dont know if they still have them but before the school year started i bought a pair of faux sheepskin lines ballet flats at target. i take them off when i walk inside my dorm room so they stay by the door and i can step into them on my way to class. they are toasty warm too (but then again, i dont get cold easily so maybe thats just me).

as far as uggs go..if i had $100 to spend on shoes i wouldn't spend it on shoes that wouldn't make me happy. i just don't see the point. i saved my money and bought a pair of leather riding boots for half that price at jc penney, they are easy to put on, and i wear them with thick socks and they keep me sooooo warm. plus, i spray them with leather protectant so i dont have to worry about them getting ruined.

Guest #39: I AM too (dictionary, anyone?) cool for Uggs.
Guest #66: That definitely makes sense. The circumstances you describe would be the only context in which I could support Ugg-wearing.

I go to school in the Pacific Northwest and those horrid shoes dominate my campus. I agree with some of the other posters -- it wouldn't be so bad if they didn't think they looked stylish. Oh well. I just revel in the fact that I am, indeed, too cool.

I have a really weird Ugg story to share...
the other day I was in target looking for a cheap pair of boots that would get me through my brief time at home in snowy Colorado, before returning to the more temperate climate in San Francisco. I settled on some boys snow boots, that are not very fashionable, but they were cheap.
As I was wandering through the aisles I noticed a woman who was taking a very long time trying on some Ugg knock-offs. I thought this was strange, because she was already wearing real Uggs... why try on knock offs?
As I watched out of the corner of my eye she proceeded to cut the tags off of the fakes, put them on, and leave. Putting her own (slightly beat up) real Uggs in their place on the shelf.
I had no idea what to make of it...
I guess for her the real uggs weren't worth the money! Not even the 19 dollars for a knock-off.

While I can't say much about other states, Uggs are a high school status symbol in New Jersey. If your family can afford to buy you a Coach purse and Ugg boots, you're probably going to be a popular spoiled princess and the most special of the special snowflakes around. This is why you see a good 90% of suburban girls wearing these things *year round* with jeans, track suits, and the previously mentioned jean mini.

I have nothing against people who wear Uggs for their intended purpose. It's the people who wear them and honestly think they look amazing when looking in the mirror that make me die a little inside.

But I've always had a pair since 1997. There is simply nothing better for apres ski, running out in the cold to do errands or wearing while you shovel or get the mail.
I only wear them for slouching around, though. They are not OK as part of an 'outfit', only as a concession to the weather.

Thank you for saying it #48, I too LOATHE Uggs. I have never owned a pair, nor will I ever in my life. I went to a University where every girl wore Juicy overpriced jumpsuits and Uggs, considering FASHION is about NOT being a clone I'm happy I can say I was the girl who wore stilettos and dress pants or skinny jeans and ballet flats. I will never understand why people would pay so much to look like they're wearing their pajamas and slippers out in public, its not attractive, and even if it IS SUPER comfortable there's nothing appealing about it. To me, Uggs are an adolescent trend, its a fad that Im praying will pass, just like every girl in my HS who wanted a Coach bag. I'm fully for fashion being about self expression and exerting how you feel but to me Uggs say thoughtless and lazy, please dont even get me started on Crocs. Being fashionable isn't about how much money you spend or what brand you buy, its about thought, fit, and exuding a confidence that says I look and feel good...Uggs you should remain as indoor slippers at best.

I'm in Chicago, and I bought my first pair this fall...I think partly because they've been around for so long, it finally wasn't trendy of me to cave in and get some. The sales person said they can't keep them on the shelves, and I think that was in September. We get snow as wicked as anywhere else in the country, and I wear them mostly to take the dog out, run errands, or get a casual bite to eat. I'd never wear them (or ANY flat shoes!) out if I wanted to look nice....they're purely utilitarian, wildly comfortable, and you have to admit, can look cute with skinnies (mine are chocolate brown). I see them all over the city, and they've begun to blend in with the winter landscape.

Uggs ceased to be a trend years ago. They have stuck around purely for function, not form. I live in Chicago, where Uggs are literally everywhere, and trust me, no one thinks that their Uggs are on the cutting edge of style. They keep you warm and comfortable on a commute, and can withstand several feet of snow and slush. And for those who claim that they can wear motorcycle boots and riding boots-- I have two pairs of gorgeous Frye boots and learned very quickly that nice leather and salt/snow do not mix. The salt stains them permanently, and the slush soaks through, leaving you with cold, wet feet. Uggs are simply the most practical choice.

UGGS= 1 point
UGGS + Victoria's Secret sweatpants= 2 points
UGGS + Juicy Couture sweatpants= 3 points
UGGS + leggings and denim skirt= 4 points

scarfs and gloves got a point each as well

We went to a rather small school and if the weather was remotely chilly, we were guaranteed a minimum of 100 points a day. Very sad.

To be honest, I live near Toronto; and I swear I think everyone has a pair of 'Ugg' styled boots. Most of my friends wear them for comfort. But from my experience all I get from them is wet socks; since I walk around the snow in them. I really don't care if they are 'POPULAR' so to speak; many people like them and it's comfortable, so I can understand why so many people buy them. It's not a fashion sort of thing; it's more of the comfy side; in my perspective. Then again, in my high school all the girls have a pair. And I mean all of them, I kind of agree with #97, but still if you can afford these things why not?

I mean, if you're actually going to wear them correctly with say jeans or actual pants, and if it's cold and wet(the latter of which it often is in Houston), then they're perfectly fine.but I can really count on one hand the number of times I have seen that happen..

They are extremely warm and comfortable, plus in the rain and bay chill they hold up quite nicely. I have had mine for about 3 years and they still look pretty great. Most of the people that are knocking UGGS sound like complete snobs. Yes, it does get ridiculous when you see the tanned girls wearing them in mid-July with a mini skirt, but in the winter when it is cold and you are shopping at the grocery store they are a great thing to own.

Plus, they are wonderful to have in Tahoe after a long day of skiing.

For the same amount of money that you spend on a pair of shapless, putrid Uggs, you could buy a pair from Sorrel, Columbia, or even Northface, which are all made for hiking and/or have the same sort of insulation in a more attractive model. But finally I sucked it up and decided to buy a pair of tall chocolate ones. Two years later and I am still wearing the same pair that I bought, still intact after incredible wear. And let's face it - I'm a little bitch when it comes to cold weather (my feet seem to be the ones who are most susceptible to the cold - those little buggers) so Uggs, as much as I hate to admit it, are a godsend for those blistery cold days.

I'm not crazy to stand in line or be put on a wait-list for them, but I'm not against owning a pair. Sure, I'd rather wear some of my pretty little flats...but when I'm walking outside in sub-zero temps, I sure am happy to know that at least my feet are warm and toasty.

Then I moved to Spain and didn't wear them once. Also, after living in New York and working in fashion I have realized that there are much, much better alternatives when you need comfort and function in the city. BUT I also still see why people are buying them...they are extremely popular in certain parts of the country and they are very comfortable and warm. My fashion-obsessed best friend detests them and if it was up to him, my two pairs would have been burned long ago. I've never worn Uggs - I categorically refuse, but more on that in a minute - but I can't imagine they'd put up much of a fight against the 3+ feet of snow we have here in the Midwest right now. I don't doubt they keep your feet warm, but dry? I prefer to layer a couple of pairs of socks under the printed rain boots I already own so I can go tromping through the snow with dry feet.

However, it is known to get down to -15 or -20 around here, and my rain boots don't keep my feet toasty in that kind of weather. I'm fancying these (http://zeta.zappos.com/product/7334530/color/153482) but I don't know how warm they'll keep me.

That said, I can't stand Uggs most of the time (i.e. when there's no weather). I know they're comfortable and easy and all that, but there's definitely something to be said for avoiding the I-just-rolled-out-of-bed look.

In defense of Uggs:
I live in Boston and go to school on Long Island so I see my fair share of Uggs. I own 3 pairs now (I got my third pair today) and I am getting the crochet ones in a couple weeks. I hated Uggs until I put my foot into one and now I'm in love. They are just so easy to wear and can give an outfit a really effortless cute look. It's not the chic-est look, of course, but sometimes chic takes a backseat to keeping warm when the temperature is below zero. Now, unless I'm in my house or am legitimately late for class I do NOT wear them with sweatpants or PJ pants. That just looks sloppy and makes even a supermodel look like a stump. When worn with jeans they are fine. Also, I prefer not to wear them with skirts (though I have worn them with dresses when going to high school choir concerts when I didn't want to put my heels on right away, thats an interesting look)

My Ugg complaint, however, is that I have not had a pair last me over a year without a major issue. The sole of my black Uggs ripped before I got a new pair so I have plastic digging into my foot if I don't wear socks, the Chestnut ones I got last year are ripped. Hopefully my new ones last longer, although I've already waterstained them (it rained today!). But, as I say to my mom, I'm wearing Uggs mostly for their comfort so if they get beaten up I'm not going to cry about it.

i really don't want to be rude. think of me as your loving older sister who can't completely keep the snark from her voice, but really is trying to do you a favor all the same. you DON'T look "cute," or even create a "really effortless cute look" with your uggs. all you look is "effortless," and when there's no redeeming word following effortless, such as: chic, glamorous, stylish, etc., then you're not accomplishing anything. you just look tired and sad.

Yes Uggs are selling to answer your question. I think the "scarcity" is a marketing ploy. I went into an outlet store and while the store was FILLED with inventory on shelves, the most popular ladies' items were behind an enclosure (picture the ropes that form the line walkway in a bank) and only store attendants could get you what you need when every thing else can just be grabbed from a shelf. They can't possibly have that poor of a grasp on inventory management.

My 14 year old daughter has been clamoring for one for 3/yrs now and I was planning on getting her a pair, cool dad that I am, but then she got older and I started to worry that she wanted things only because her friends wanted them as opposed to following her own taste as I did when I was a tngr, and did not buy them. That said, my mother sent some money for her bday a mnth ago and I broke down so one of her gifts was a pair of Uggs from her g/m. She is crazy about them and a couple weeks ago, the boots are sitting then and she goes, "I love my Uggs"

Fortunately, however, the money did not come out of my pockets, because while I know there are rip offs out there, it did not bother me, until I went into reputable Aeropostiale last week and they had rip offs for $29!!!!. All probably made in the same Chinese factories that makes the Uggs. Is labor that expensive in Australia that Uggs can't at least give us a Made In Australia tag?

Here is a question for the Ugg wearers out there. When you have an "exclusive" item, be it the Coach bags, or the Ugg boots etc, why would you still want them when every pedestrian and peasant is wearing them?

Long Island got mentioned a couple times here. I am sure there are LI residents running around in their Uggs, but their maids and au pairs are also running around in their Uggs. Doesn't that/shouldn't that just disqualify them for you?

Agree with with 103 fellow Chicago girl! Only thing is, Uggs are starting not be a good match with Chicago winters I have found living there for almost four year, if you live in the burbs it's fine but the city is totally different. Rain boots lined in the inside are much better, Michigan Ave becomes quite slushy along with most the side walks and Uggs sadly don't with stand the water. So if you are on that waiting list, I would say get a pair of lined rain boots instead if you live in Chicago. Just a personal option college girls for sure keep Uggs in business, they are all the rage at most universitys along with hoodies.

However, even though my pair have been pretty good as snow boots, they (and my poor feet) were completely drenched in rain and slush yesterday -- so much for waterproof, supposedly. Anyone else have the same problem?!

In reference to #97's quote: "I'm happy I can say I was the girl who wore stilettos and dress pants or skinny jeans and ballet flats."
(I sincerely hope your from somewhere where it never ever snows.)

I always get complements on my Uggs. Especially my second pair which I bought in September, seen here (in espresso): http://www.uggaustralia.com/ProductDetails.aspx?gID=w&categoryID=283&productID=5119&model=Knightsbridge
They are far from the "rolled out of bed" look. I usually pull them up over some skinny jeans and it looks very put together. They don't make my feet look big, but that might be because mine go pretty high up the leg (almost to the knee) so they don't hang off your feet like the ankle-high ones tend to do after a few months.

And frankly, when it's like 9 degrees outside and you're wearing these, "skinny" jeans with leggings and tights underneath and a GIANT winter coat and scarf/hat, no one is going to look at you and be like "Where are your cute little ballet flats/stilettos!? your feet look huge!". It all balances out. (Think - A Christmas Story where the little brother's so bundled he can't put his arms down.)

The only, and I repeat ONLY complaint I have is that they aren't waterproof. (as several before me mentioned). But I still wear them a good 60% of the year when it's not raining/sleeting/snowing (if it's just snow on the ground it's usually fine, I don't do much off-road trekking).

I'd really like to find an Ugg-equivalent type boot that's water proof. Quite frankly these fashionable little pointed-toe black leather boots I see people running around NYC in look like they'll fall apart after a few blocks, let alone a few blocks in the snow. I need something with traction, a thick sole, and waterproof material!

I used to make fun of Uggs when they first came out, until I wore a pair for a day. It makes sense to wear them when you live in cold snowy areas. I live in Toronto, and we get really snowy, wet winters. When I wear my leather boots my feet are always freezing and wet. With Ugss I can plow through snow banks and puddles. I could care less if they aren't cool, they are practical. I enjoy not getting frostbite while waiting for the streetcar in -15 weather.

(but if you live in a warm area, wear them because you think they're cool, or wear them all year round then you suck.)

For practical reasons I can understand why people need to wear Uggs. They make absolute sense when it's freezing cold outside. I agree with guest 178 that if someone is wearing Uggs for fashion purposes they really shouldn't be. If you live in L.A. where Uggs are completely unnecessary, you are missing a really important message: Uggs being stylish have gone the way of the dinosaur. They are highly unattractive, but when really cold, are very comfortable and keep your feet warm to the point of burning. Just a thought: I wonder how many sheep have been used during the past years to make Uggs. It must be QUITE a lot.

I finished college last year and made it through high school and college never buying a pair. For the longest time, I HATED Uggs and thought they were UGGly. I bought so many pairs of boots over the years to wear in winter. It always ended with all of them either getting ruined from bad weather, weren't comfortable, or giving me blisters. I find it funny that my first year out in the real world when I'm supposed to be an adult, I'm contemplating buying a pair of Uggs. I've always associated them with the stereotypes and high schoolers, but my main reason for wanting them is just sheer comfort and practicality. I don't think they're stylish. I'll always be carrying a way cuter pair to put on when I get to where I need to be!

But they can add just a little something to your outfit as well; I’ve been reading the other posts where people are ragging on wearing them with torn jeans and Abercrombie shirts...did you take the time to actually notice it looks good? Maybe just cause I’m an Abercrombie addict but uggs go with the look. Ohhh and did I mention I’m a guy? But I got a pair of uggs in a trade, and they're pretty warm. Not good for when it's slushy outside, but I'm fine with them. It's too cold here to think about being glamorous all the time. I have sorels, so I'd put uggs in the same category.

Okay, so yes. They're ugly. But I live in MN (like a lot of posters) and there's no alternative. Trust me, I've looked. A lot. And I've tried to go out in the snow in other shoes, which freeze my feet.

I wear the short black UGGs with jeans and a cashmere sweater, or black leggings/long underwear and a sweater dress. If I'm going to work, I pack ballet flats and leave my UGGs at the door with my coat.

I think I'm going to buy the taller heeled ones, (I think they're called Seline) so I'll have at least two pairs of shoes for the winter. And then, come April, I can happily pack those babies up until next year.

I remember the first time coming home to AZ after my freshman year at Macalester in Saint Paul, I thought I was going to die laughing at the U of A girls choosing to wear UGGs. Seriously, it's a necessity, not a luxury.

SO, I didn't get through reading all the comments, and I have a feeling many won't get around to reading mine.

Either way, I just wanted to make a comment regarding the convenience of UGGs in certain weather conditions.
Being a (not so proud) UGG owner, I happened to read the tags that came along with the boots.
(my feet froze a couple too many times waiting for buses in blizards during my commute to and from university last winter)

Being made of sheep skin etc. etc., they're meant to keep you're feet at body temperature in extreme heat and cold. I wouldn't know about the heat factor, seeing as I just got them, but if it is true, then they are obviously around not as a fashion trend, but also as some sort of convenience and necessity if they do their jobs.

Although I don't understand the logic of wearing a pair in hot weather when there are so many lovely sandals to choose from, and you could feel the breeze through your toes. Maybe I'm just a free spirit.

ANYWAYS, there are more important things in the world than fashion.
Hideous as they are, they ARE good for SOMETHING. So what if you're fashion inadequate?! It's unfortunate, but somehow those people survive through the hardships of life, even maybe with the help of their UGGs.

i'm a junior at a (not-very-fashionable) big ten college, and i got my first pair of uggs in high school. i ended up losing one (yes, one) and got a replacement my freshman year of school. those have lasted until now, though i did receive a new pair for christmas. i think they're cute in their own way, but wear them mostly for their comfort & warmth. i love clothing & style, although i'm not that trendy of a person. i am not afraid to wear my sweats with uggs. i guess i just don't really care. when i'm studying, i just want to be comfortable. i do think that they tend to stretch out (the pair i replaced have become quite large & shapeless. it turns out you're supposed to buy them a size smaller) and they are not waterproof. if you wear them too much in the snow/slush they become discolored, and quite often get salt stains. but when it's cold out & there's no snow, they've got good traction & are so warm.

i don't understand what the big fuss is. i agree, i think some of you are being snobby. besides people who say that they are "too cool" for something are not really that cool.

i agree with the anti-ugg/miniskirt look. i don't get that, and i've never worn them in the summer. i don't really think they keep you all that cool. also i agree with #103, they haven't been a trend since like '00 when Paris Hilton or whoever made them famous. also, i believe they lose some of their "exclusivity" when about 65% of college females own atleast one pair.

What I DON'T like is how every girl in the school wears them with their pajama pants TUCKED IN THEM?!?! I don't get it. It's ugly. The shoes are cute with mini skirts or skinny pants/jeans. But baggy pajama pants??? WTF?

I grew up in Wisconsin and I go to school in Chicago. I don't wear Uggs. They're disgusting.
I deal with the cold and snow in my fashionable shoes. Deal with it. They are so nasty. They have no style at all. And I know many of you are using the "it's cold and snowy here and they're comfy and easy to put on". Well, that's like saying slippers are acceptable to wear in public. Not right.
I also have a cabin in the U.P of Michigan and I don't even have Uggs for up there. I have Mukluks. They are far cuter and warmer. Ugh, just throw the Uggs out.
The computer even says the word "Ugg" is spelled wrong. That must mean they are wrong.
So please, get back in your fashionable shoes and walk through the snow and cold. Just get over the cold. Be a tough woman!

Uggs are really popular in London, which really surprised me when I moved there. Uggs (and their knock-off counterparts) are in almost every shoe store on Oxford Street. I really don't get it because the wet London weather isn't conducive to boots that aren't waterproof. UGG Australia is not an Australian company. It is American. They are selling their version of the Australian ugg boot (sheepskin boot) and there is a lot of controversy over their patent/trademarking.

I believe that the UGG's are not being bought so much for the east coast market, because of the damaging outcomes it has to the suade after a day in the weather.

Im pretty sure these sales are resulting from the westcoast market, because it has more wear & tear years before being effected by weather conditions in one day.

I understand they aren't cute but who cares? I'm not a stepford wife, I don't want to wear my dress and heels when I'm schlumping around the city, (especially since there are a buttload of hills and I don't have a car.) in chapel hill they are mostly a status symbol.

i wish i had a dollar for every pair i saw. and 5 dollars for when someone wears them with a northface/mountain hardware jacket, coach/longchamp/herve chapelier bag, designer jeans, and a ralph lauren button down.

I'm commenting from London, and it's actually been kind of interesting to figure out from all these posts what the various profiles are of 'girls in UGGS' across the pond.

I think in London and in Brit Unis it's kind of a different situation. UGGS obv had the first phase, which made an impact on me personally around 2004, tho others may have come to them earlier. They were embraced by La Moss and so were nominally cool for the following season in the UK, because she actually does have that much power.

For a couple of years after that, UGGS were an unequivocal faux-pas across the board.

Our own native population of terry-cloth enamoured 'chavs' have always gone in more often for the knock-off mukluk boots rather than the faux-UGG (I like to call these FUGGS, it amuses me. I suppose the mukluk equivalent would be a fukluk which is possibly even better...) I have a £4 of FUGG-boots from ASDA (our Wal Mart) for the exclusive purpose of dog-walking, they are plenty water-proof enough for the temperate English winter, and fine at keeping out the rain in my experience.

Since last Jan/Feb however, UK fashion editors all recognised the renewed legitimacy of wearing UGGS. Mossy and SJP are the poster-girls of UGG rehabilitation, as they have both been wearing them again but with near-grunge levels of scruffiness in their accompanying outfits. Among UK demographics - yes the chelsea girls, sloane rangers, uni students, etc as all commented on above but also London media girls etc - UGGS have really taken hold only in the last year as part of the uniform, rather than a trend per se. Now they have this new status of being a classic on the levels of trench coats, waxed barbour jackets etc.

I guess at some level the statement made by wearers is: "my zero effort clothing / default duvet-day option includes boots at £170 a pop" - but I'm sure you guys aren't really going to latch on to the obnoxiousness of that sentiment anyway, because this is after all a fashion blog.

And yes, I own and cherish a pair of the tall, grey shearling classic UGGs - and all I want to know is: How do you NYC commuters use them for your quick-change-out-of shoes? Here in London we are rarely out of black opaques in the office this time of year, and the fluffy interiors of my UGGs make a hot mess of dark coloured hosiery to the extent that it's pretty much bin-worthy.

Another poster that made me laugh is the college girl proclaiming her individuality over UGG-wearers on the premise that she instead wears "ballet flats and skinny jeans." Riiiiggghht.

Sorry for length of this post - length of thread meant there was a lot to comment on!

I live in The Netherlands and since 2002/2003 everyone who can afford UGG's has at least one if not multiple pairs.OF course is there the option of buying knock-off's but those who do are looked down on.

At certain(preppy, elite, posh etc.) schools a girl will not fit in until she has a pair of uggs, besides uggs are at the moment minnetonkas the IT shoe of the season.

Uggs are worn all year and to every occasion. The most populat senior (I am a junior) even worn Uggs to Prom, which caused a big mess at the door as the dresscode was black tie but she somehow convinced everyone that she was cool enough to wear them.

Personally do I own several pairs and love them for thier comfort however am I planning on not wearing them every again after I graduate from High School.

Furthermore did I just want to say tht Uggs were never a success in Germany, until this Christmasbreak when I visited Germany and they were all of a sudden everywhere. I guess Germany picked up the "trend" a bit late :P

I live in Brooklyn though, made my purchase at a flagship store near Lincoln Center and Broadway. I had to admit it was a bit discomforting to be in a stored filled with die-heart Ugg fans; in other terms the majority of the shoppers were already fully equipped with last years models.

In any case to answer frequency concern I have indeed notice, especially in the NYC many cold New York and foreign feet walking in comfortable Australasian pillows.

I moved to Northern Virginia about 3 years ago and instantly hated the way that the girls from the suburbs wore uggs all year round (Abercrombie uniform included) but i recently went home to southampton where it was snowing. The first thing i bought this holiday was a pair of uggs for myself.

for the record i will never in a milion years be wearing them with a denim mini.

I'm a 21 year old college student in Pittsburgh and I love my Uggs to death. I got them bc Pittsburgh is freezing and they keep my feet super warm...shoes that I commonly wear include Chucks and Vans slip-ons which are not conducive to cold, so Uggs are amazing. In any event, at my university, we have this looked called the "H&SS uniform"...mostly girls from the Humanities and Social Sciences program (lib. arts) wear this "uniform" consisting of Uggs with university sweats tucked in, a hoodie, and a pea coat...gross, I know. Back home in Westchester County, New York, EVERYONE owns Uggs...and they always look new. Suffice it to say, ppl are still wearing them, and get new ones like all the time...

This post made me curious enough to go out and try on a pair of Uggs. I already own the Caroline Uggs, which are not at all traditionally Ugg-ly, but have never tried the 'regular' ones. I happened to be at Nordstrom, and zomg, are they comfy! However, I think it's a slippery slope. Today, Uggs... tomorrow, sweatsuit. Not pretty. I'd consider buying some to wear as slippers 'round the house, but I can't imagine wearing them out in the rural/suburban MN slush. I'll stick with my (also unpretty but far more functional) Columbia Bugabootres.

Well, much to my surprise, they were waiting to their turn to get into the Ugg store. Amazing to me. I mean they're cute and all, but not sure I would wait on line in the freezing cold for them.

But they are doing something right because I didn't see any other lines in Soho!

that said, ugg (the company) is seen by some as an evil corporation over here; ugg boots have been around FOREVER in australia, though until a few years ago they were indoor shoes only. but when they started to become popular stateside, ugg trademarked the name and started charging the ridiculous prices that they do...and long story, but a lot of small businesses went broke (there was even a documentary about it; 'the good the bad and the ugg').
moral of the story; i have a pair of emu brand boots - locally and ethically made unlike their evil bigger brother.
and i only wear them indoors.

Unfortunately I was missing the Lohan-inspired mid-winter orange glow you all speak of... *gag*

I also have a friend, whose sister goes to college way way up north and came home one break with them. She was really really sorry because I guess at the time people thought they were ugly, but she said they were the warmest shoes shed ever had.

I'm from Texas, and I effing hate Uggs. I didn't realize my hatred of these boots stemmed from the annoying sorority girls who wear them in the spring with their short short skirts to school. Umm, it's Texas, and it's 80 degrees when they're whipping out this look.

But something changed this weekend when I was visiting my dad in Minnesota. Seeing as I've never in my life seen a real winter, I didn't know that Uggs could serve a purpose. I didn't have adequate snow boots, so I went to the store and *gasp* had to actually cave in a buy a pair. Let's just say the week was saved because my feet didn't fall off when I was trudging in snow what was a foot deep. I have a new found respect for these boots, but only in the north. I will never, ever wear them in Texas.

This winter, I bought my first pair of Uggs. I think they are ugly, but as I wear them, comfort is starting to be of more importance than the look. Many girls do have Uggs; however, I've seen a lot of what my friend calls "Fuggs" (which essentially is supposed to be fake Uggs). I don't know how they could compete with the comfort of the real thing. If it's not comfortable, perhaps they're wearing it as a fashion statement? I surely hope not.

Mind the fact that I do live in Northern California. I agree with ALL the above California comments - Uggs are huge in California, regardless of where you are.

I actually just purchased a pair of Emus rather than Uggs to replace a pair of Uggs that I had for 11 years. I bought them in 97 when there were only two styles available, Ultimate and Classic. I used them all winter, every winter to take the dogs out, get the mail, basically to schlep around. Never really got into wearing them as a fashion statement. I finally had to toss them this year after wearing holes in the toes and heels. I wanted to replace them but couldn't really justify the price they run for now, so I got myself a pair of Emus which seem to equal my previous Uggs in comfort and warmth. I'll still wear them to take the dogs out but you won't see me out and about in them :)

Here is the thing about Uggs. They may have started off with the best of intentions, practicality and comfort, which would make wearing them totally alright if that were the reason they became popular. Puffy coats are ugly, but they are a nessescity,a dn no one rages about them.Young girls wear uggs for the same reasons they wear Abercrombie or Hollister: A. Because they are too ignorant to know anything about fashion, and are unlikely to have the rescources/motivation to find a boot that truly suits them, B.) All the popular (read:money) girls wear them, but mostly because C.) They are so popular that everyone knows what they cost you. They are a hideous cold weather accessory turned shallow suburban high school status symbol. The college girls who wear them are most likely still trying to be one of those girls from her high school. Grow up and buy a real pair of shoes.

My first opinion of them was rather cynical as many of the WAGS (footballers wives and girlfriends) wore them however, a few years ago in New York I found a pair that I hadn't seen at home. Yes at first I felt like I was walking funny, like Neil Armstrong probably felt while on the moon but after a while my toes felt so warm and snug... a feeling that you don't get from a pair of converse. From then on I find the chance to wear them when I can. Fair enough they may not be as attractive as say a pair of Monolo's but their main purpose is for comfort and warmth. If people wear them for status reasons (as they are rather expensive) let them be... don't put the Ugg down until you've tried a pair!

My daughter is a college student in NY and owns several pair. They're waterproof, warm and comfortable for walking city streets. Have you been to Boston lately? That's all you see downtown. With the state of the economy and everyone trying to cut costs, invest in a pair and turn your thermostat down. The money you save will pay for your UGGs! I go the The Fashion Institute of Technology and see these potatoes all over campus. Mostly worn by Fashion Merchandising majors from Long Island, Staten Island, NJ and of course LA valley girls. They are always dirty and look disgusting much like old house slippers except hightop, which is basically what uggs are.

I don't understand why girls don't realize how unflattering they are. They always make the wearer look like a dirty bum who was too lazy to wear real shoes. Might as well wear them with a bathrobe. They severely break up the line of the leg shortening the body and give the illusion of very wide legs-Birkenstocks for winter. Are there equally warm if not warmer just as comfortable less nasty boots for winter available? Of course but people will buy anything if they see everyone else with them no matter how stupid they look.

I had a pair 3 years ago (purchased in Shanghai), wearing for one season at home. Then i came back to China half a year ago and - nothing's changed! Uggs are everywhere! Probably another advantage is their low price (you can get a pair for less then $9)

I lived in CA the first 35 years of my life and never really wore Uggs.....mostly just surfers and hippies wore them. But since I have been in the Portland, OR area for almost 5 years, I consider UGGs pretty much necessary. It gets pretty cold here.....it was below 20 for almost all of December! There really isn't a boot that is more comfortable and warm.....when I am cold, I want to be warm and comfortable. I know that you are thinking that I am close to forty and have given up, but that is just not the case. I am probably more fashion forward than most people I see around here, unless you are downtown with all the twenty somethings.....and then it is still debateable. Anyway, I just ordered a Tall pair in grey to replace my Chestnut ones.

one pair are those 'classic' ones and i have another pair which was bought over the winter.. black with fur.
I first got mine a few years ago when not many were wearing them for winter wearing. and i wear them now sometimes because it has been the coldest winter !!
Im a teenager and many girls I know wear them.. mostly fake though. But the ones who do wear the real ones really give them a bad name and match them with tracksuit pants and large abercrombie hoodies.

I bought a pair of black Uggs ten years ago, looking for winter boots that were warm and waterproof. I had not ever heard of them before. I wore them a few times, but the conundrum was that although they felt so lovely barefoot (from the shearling lining), in the winter one does need to wear socks. Over three years I wore them perhaps a dozen times. They were gorgeous, but they were also completely flat on the sole (I've noticed this since with a pair of Born boots) as in, don't try to go around walking down Michigan Ave. in Chicago, even in the snow. If you didn't have flat feet before, you will after wearing them on concrete!). I eventually sold them to a consignment shop. THEN...they became oh so hip (and in the summmer?) on the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign. The milk maids continue to wear them with shorts in the summer and pajama bottoms in the winters, even though a the result of a filthy pair of Uggs is a a slovenly appearance.

some girls also wear 'fakes' like emus or bear paws....etc. i don't know why they're classified as "fake uggs" and absolutely everyone at western has them.

To comment #226 , Mukluks are ugly as well! In fact, i think they're uglier than uggs. And 'Mukluks' is hardly a word either!

Anyway, I agree uggs look, well, ugly, but they ARE super warm and comfortable.. and i was reading comments about those UGG slippers and right now im FREEZING and i could really do with a pair of those.. and it wouldn't matter because im at home and no one will see me.. though, if i do feel like wearing them in public, it wouldn't matter EITHER, because i'll look 'cool' .. HAHA..
yeah the UGG cult has really hit where in living (ireland).. and girl at my school (im 16) love them and would sometimes wear them with their uniforms.

But i think uggs could probably look good with the right outfit in the winter. And believe me, UGGs with Abercrombie/Holister/Juicy Couture tracksuits ARENT the worst case..
you should see them matched with Nike hoodies!!!!!!! thats how made ireland has gotten.. where i live anyway

I'm in the city and I was wearing my Uggs earlier this week (1 ft of snow on the ground!!).

I have two pairs, one from Winter 2004/2005 - tall black Brooks, and a more "stylish" pair from Christmas 2007 that is buckled up on the side.

I see Uggs on the street every once in a while, and mostly on snowy/below freezing days. Both of mine have withstood nasty slush conditions, and I haven't needed to buy a new pair. However, I don't understand how the complete suede ones can last after a puddle... (Mine are smooth leather up to the ankles and waterproof.) Not chic, but love them for their utilitarian purposes.

My god people are still buying these things.
This company is the perfect proof that if you market it right anyone will buy it.
UGG FACTS & INFO:

A 'snow boot' that's outer shell is suede. No matter how much protection you spray on these things you can kiss them good bye in no time.

People where them in the summer time = wearing socks with sandals.

UGG Style factor = buying shoes at the grocery store.

They are comfortable from what I hear, but that comfort is composed of faux fur fleece like material that goes for less than 5 bucks a yard at MOOD.

PEOPLE GET A GRIP!
Think about what fabulous Frye Boots you could be getting for $200 bucks a pop.

In the end if you wearing these things you probably live in New Jersey and drive to high school every morning in a VW Cabrio.

I am an observer of fashion -a former retail buyer - I noticed that in 2009 every teenage girl and her Mom in suburbia, Washington DC, is wearing UGG boots regardless of the weather. They have the skinny jeans tucked in with their Northface fleece on top. The Uggs trend was very popular LY after the holidays but in 2009 they are everywhere even in the rural areas. Hopefully they have hit their peak. Although I expect to see the same girls will be wearing ugg flipflops come spring.

They are somewhat comfortable and warm, perfect for the winter, but I will never walk out of my house wearing a pair. I live in NYC and the only store I know that distributes UGGs is Journeys.

Everyone has missed the point of Uggs. They were made by surfers, to put on after you come out of the freezing cold water. That is why they are popular in Cali, where surf culture dominates fashion. They are very comfortable, you don't have to wear them with socks, and they were never designed as fashion. They just caught on in the explosion of popularity of surf culture around 2005.

Get on a board and earn your Uggs.

i never wear them in the rain or the snow because they are not snow boots they are not meant to get immersed in that type of enviornment but what i can say is that i have see the popularity increasing as the statistics say this yr sales are up. im from uptown ny and this time last yr not that many girls were rockin' them
now everyone in the hood is wearing them even the F-UGGS

I'm 38 years old and bought a pair of Ugg's 2 years ago, my first pair. Before I had a chance to wear them I ended up loaning them out to our nanny who was going to Russia for two weeks. She told me they were incredibly comfortable and warm and perfect for the freezing cold over there. I live in the northeast and have found them to be wonderful for light snow days and cold days, extremely comfy, and I get compliments ALL the time on them. Perhaps because they're unusual, not the typical looking Ugg's, the shaft is fluffy sheepskin and has leather ties and beading wrapped around them, they're also a light color. Anyway, I am not fond of the plain Ugg's, but who am I to say what's in or out? The self-appointed fashion police has quite a chore to do, because these days it seems like most people just wear whatever they want and thumb their noses at what's supposed to be "in or out". And thank God this time has come.

I live in California, except for a few trips up north in winter - in which case they were the best shoes ever, really without them my poor feet would have frozen - they are my go to house shoes, especially in winter time.
