Fashion Is Fun

Beyonce and Gareth, Together Again

beyonce diva video screen shot.jpgTo: Tips@ Fashionista .com

Heads up.

I figure you’ve probably already seen it, but Beyonce’s new video “Diva” is basically a recreation of Gareth Pugh’s SS09 show. It’s also SAWEEEEET.

I don’t care how impractical they are, how bad do you want those metal fringe sunglasses?

Minus that weird mannequin/C3PO scene, I actually kind of love it. Especially the little lace frock she sports.

im surprised by how most people commenting dont like this! i agree, beyonce wearing pugh feels a bit degrading to both myself and other fashion folk who appreciate pugh's originality, but once i got over my brief pretension and watched the video, i have to say, i think it is tha bomb!

beyonce (as a brand) is all about fantasy and gareth pugh's designs echo that. his clothes make her look badass and add to the short narrative (especially near the end) she has going on in the video.

plus, the song is great and would be totally awesome to dance to at a club or to groove out to in front of my mirror if it were remixxed to be a bit faster.

overall, i think the song/video/pugh's designs come together great and I really enjoyed watching it.

It kind of blows my mind that everyone on fashionista feels the need to hate on Beyonce so enthusiastically. True, her mother's sense of style is questionable - but way for all of you to show your anti-urban bias by criticizing her so fervently when she tries to do something high fashion. Don't be mad at the level of success she's attained without being an arm chair critic (or laptop critic).

Haters are secretly dancing to this song in their bedrooms.

The video, song, clothes friggin' rock.

And...

I'm sure Thierry has Beyonce on his iPod.

All you wannabe fashion cognoscenti are so convinced that your affected personal tastes are the sh*t. Get out of your own a**.

Just because Gareth's clothes are not adorning a scrawny stoic blonde does not "cheapen" his clothes.

I don't mind beyonce wearing pugh so much at all. I agree it is nice to see avant garde high fashion on something other than a twiggy model..

the problem i have with this is that the song does not match the clothes in any way. if she wanted to be out of the box and high fashion with her image then her music should've reflected that, instead of her singing over an 808 laden track that is no way shape or form pushing any boundaries or musically forward thinking.

pugh's clothes push the boundaries of art and fashion and anyone who is using that type of image should be pushing boundaries in art as well.... and that is something beyonce simply does not do.

i really hope she keeps this image and on her next album and finally really does go "outside the box" like she SAID she was gonna do on this album....

Love the silver dangly glasses, and the Gareth Pugh, but I also agree that the outfits don't match the song. I also would like to note that she is the face of Armani Diamonds and Muglar will be designing her clothes for her upcoming tour and she has two clothing lines those would have been a better choice for this video. I would love for her to wear Gareth for her song sweet dreams. That would be really cute.

Stop the track let me state facts i told you to give me a minute and i'll be right back
50 million round the world and they siad i couldn't get it
I done got so sick and feltiy with Benjas i can't spend
HOW YOU GONE BE TALKING SHIT
You act like i just got up in it
Been the number one diva in this game for a minute
I know you read the paper the one that they call a Queen
Every radio round the word know me cause that where i be.

YOU HATERS NEED TO RELAX. . . THE SONG IS FAB AND SHE IS PUSHING THE BOUNDARIES OF ART . . . THE CONCEPT OF BRINGING HIGH FASHION TO THE PEOPLE THAT HIP HOP POP AND R&B TARGET IS OUT SIDE THE BOX. If the Music was all artie as well as the clothes it wouldnt have the same impact . . . She s bridging 2 different worlds.

Nothing new Beyonce copies everything! A guessing & memory game, all you have to do is guess who she copied in her music & video's.

yes, most of you are purely hating to hate. it's HARD not to be jealous. we all understand that. up from her tacky roots Beyonce emerges AGAIN, victorious. it's tough.

the song/video are called DIVA. she is supposed to look tough and she does. haters. the Pugh definitely works to that end and sorry haters but she is destroying those stilettos in every shot. you wish. YOU WISH!!

the main problem i have with the video is that she is nowhere NEAR the tough bitch that the stylist/choreographer/director would have you believe.

A for effort but she can't really dance. she is a dance PHONY the same way she is an acting phony and as a dancer i am revolted (as i'm sure are real actresses) every time she pretends to have real chops. the masses can't tell but we professionals can and it is beyond degrading to us.

at the end she is supposed to be ROCKING OUT in her little unchoreographed solo section and all she can manage is a busted, pathetic 2-step. it's not hot. it's exposing.

otherwise, love, love LOVES the styling: the fashion, the 'graphy, and the direction. FINALLY the vibe of the video matches the vibe of the song. she usually just lets her face and body do the video work without heed to her perfectly ghostwritten lyrics.

Go B. This time.

im kinda digging her widely publicized affair with gareth pugh.
I like how an r&b/hip-hop artist is bringing a whole different type of fashion to the floor because we dont normally see musicians decking themselves out in the most avant-garde looks.
I do think that she should mix it up tho, because gareth pugh, while he may be brilliant, is not the only designer out there :)

i try to stay pretty open minded, and if i saw this without any context for her, i might be fine with it... but after seeing her for years with southern belle hair and makeup and in the house of dereon monstrosities, it just makes no sense. it's like she got an over the summer crash course to try to fit in with rihanna's cool kid crowd, but has just ended up looking like a poser.

Guest #11, just because some people don't like this video, doesn't mean they're "anti-urban." That is so ridiculous.

Beyonce simply can't pull off most of the edgy garb. She looks best when she's all glammed up. Even the jeans and fringed glasses suit her.

Also: No one's "jealous". We're allowed to state opinions of dislike.

thank you 28. i was about to say the same. peple don't like beyonce, so they're anti-urban? she CAN'T pull off any of this high fashion stuff. she needs to stop. i would be considered urban. she is beyond awful. she is trying toooooooo hard.

Wow! What a disappointment, it looks like it's been directed by a teenager.

The cinematography is awful as is the lighting.

It looks like it was all shot handheld. Or they had a reallly bad steadicam operator.

It's a pity it could have looked impressive if a little more thought had gone into it and added some sort of narrative rather than a bunch of girls dancing.

The director is Melina (Black dog, part of Ridley Scott Associates). I'm not a fan and think most of Melina's work only looks mediocre because of the expensive post-production.

Guest 28 you made the best comment of the debate yet...
I wonder how Gareth feels about people being snoby as to who can or cnt wear his clothes...
I well remember him being on the reality tv show Fashion House, in which the prize was working for Stella McCartney....
Clothes are made to be worn people!!! Everyone single one of us brings a new astheatic to the things we choose to wear...
