Can Anyone Else Do the Alice?

trying the alice dellal at home small.jpgLiving with two girls who both work in fashion is a godsend. Not only are they aware of current trends for women, but they also have a huge interest in boys (menswear of course).

So on a gloomy London morning when I was overheard complaining about shaving, my very caring roommate decided we should go out and by me a beard trimmer. It would apparently give me designer stubble and the appearance of someone who doesn’t really shave but maintains a rough look. Brilliant.

Little did I know the fun that would come with the beard trimmer I now own and the late night experimenting on other members of our “fashion” flat.

You can probably guess what happened, so I’ll spare you the details and go straight to the burning question:

Can a girl pull off an Alice Dellal-inspired shaved side?

Let us know, and if you have pictures, well, you know what to do.

—BR(IT) BOY

[Editor’s Note: Natalie and Britt recently met Johanna, one of the Stylista contestants, in person. She had a somewhat shaved side (more of a very close crop, if you want to get technical), and we have to say, it looked amazing, mostly because it was so subtle. Just a little PS since we would have immediately answered Br(it)’s question with a loud-as-hell no - though we think his friend pulls of the true shave quite well.]

I have a short bob and used to have it cut very short underneath (not quite shaved but very close). It looked really cool when I slicked the rest of my hair back into a pompadour-mohawk type thing.

Right, but like 100000 million girls in LA already have this.
Brigitte, JDavey...
Check the cobrasnake I'm sure you'll see at least 5 in the first 10 minutes.

I kind of think people are growing those in already.
I mean I've thought about it, it looks cool, but its wayyy to copycat at this point.

Yeah you know in 2003 (that now seems so long ago), a friend of mine in London (who owns Kung Fu Cuts on Brick Lane) tried to convince me that I should shave the underside of my head, a la Alice. I was almost ready to go (I trusted his opinion). Good lord am I happy I didn't do it. I could see it growing out and looking all sorts of funny on me. (But I have black hair and I assure you it would have been an effin' mess).

Coco Sumner, the young daughter of Sting, did it to her hair. She looked great but it also seemed derivative because, well, who else but Alice? Kay Goldberg also did it to herself while at RISD this Fall.

I like all the hair to one side, as seen on the runways of Proenza.

But the shave?

Leave it to Alice.

Are we really calling this haircut Alice Dellal-inspired? The haircut really comes out of 80's and 90's skater, gutter-punk, and goth culture and has been around in various incarnations for years. But the person who really rocked the look best was Björk on her 2003 Greatest Hits tour:

http://pictures.bjorkish.net/2003/live/bjorkish_0823ny_02.jpg

It's been fairly consistently common on the West Coast with guys and girls and especially popular with youngish dykes in the Pacific Northwest.

i think she pulls it off amazingly in those pics, but whenever she decided to grow it back it might look alittle akward for a little while.

I'm sorry. This is an ugly hairstyle on anyone at anytime. Sometimes trends aren't for the best. Here is an example.

Shannon Sossoman had a shaved patch haircut in Rules of Attraction. After seeing that years ago I became obsessed with the idea, but as of yet haven't had the balls to try it. It can be great, but only on a select group of people and I am not one of them.

I totally agree with post 22 fashion is a cycle and is constantly reproducing itself. No designer or trend recently has created anything that we have not seen before in history and it will continue to work this way until something changes the way the world is.
You can see this example through the effects of WW1 WW11

I admire Alice a lot for it, the whole concept is good, but doesn't translate well to the mainstream and it's not attractive on anyone.

thank you hommenivore...i was just about say the same thing.

seriously, it is really annoying for some "it" girl to adopt a look that has been around forever, only to have everyone think that she invented it because they live sheltered lives.

Yeah well fashion people are lemmings and we all know this... most fashion kids don't even know that someone probably already rocked a look that they think was just "discovered". So let's just call it the gutterpunk haircut and not the "alice" haircut. And how about we stop being slaves to all of these no talent rich girls that fashion magazines insist on spoon feeding us as "it" girls!

Thank you Fashionista for not falling prey to the hype of mediocrity neatly disguised by the veil of moneyed parents.

well, i had a similar haircut to this girl's in 2000 , but that's cuz i had a head injury and they had to shave half my head in order to perform surgery. and i hated the look, and i would never repeat it or do something similar in order to follow a trend.
