Hedi Slimane‘s just shot a rather lengthy portfolio for Dazed & Confused.
He and Nicola Formichetti, the mag’s creative director, spent four nights roaming London’s streets and recruiting the cool kids – hipsters, club kids, fashion kids, jazz kids – on a nightly basis for morning shoots. They mixed those in with the especially stylish characters they’d been keeping on the backburner for a collection of aspirational black and white photos.
“The aim was to create a definitive record of London youth right now through Hedi’s timeless style,” said Formichetti.
Dazed asked teenagers to send in their answers to the question, “What does it mean to be young and British today?” and the thirty best answers accompany the images.
For once, we wish were still a teen – and for always we wish we were British.

Sooo True.
Are there no black/asian/minority teenagers in the UK? I’m an admirer of hedi’s work, but maybe it’d be more accurate for dazed to say that his work is a record of contemporary WHITE london youth. Although I guess this shouldn’t surprise me too much- formichetti is a great stylist but he also put skinny white boys in samurai/kimono garb for vogue hommes japan…striking images/styling, but the claims of sociological exploration are a bit of stretch, no?
Well stated Guest #2. Couldn’t agree more.
WTF is a Jazz Kid?
I agree with guest #2. Not only are there no white kids, but I’d wager a bet that all of these “hipsters, club kids, fashion kids, and jazz kids (WTF IS THAT?)” are pretty loaded too. Which is FINE, but don’t pretend they represent some snapshot of what it means to be young in London.
http://www.balmainbazaar.blogspot.com is in it! x
Read: Snapshot of skinny, rich, white kids.
I don’t really like it… the girls all look really depressed and like they’re clinging on to the guys. the guys just generally look really blase about life… it would have been nice to have seen a bit more of liveliness…
There was no “roaming” involved. Every kid picked was somehow connected to Dazed. I.E friends with the editors or sons/nieces etc of the editors.
I am very disappointed that Dazed and Hedi will claim to capture young London while only showing white models. Guest 2 I totally agree with you. London is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the world. Who is Dazed trying to kid? Only people who haven’t traveled and haven’t been there I suppose. I have been there and I have to tell you that the people in those pictures don’t represent the REAL London at all. Like 9 said its probably friends of friends. I am not hating, I am white too but come on Dazed it absurd to make a claim that these pics represent todays London youth.
i think what everyone seems to be commenting on is that this seems to be more of the same from slimane.
credit where credit is due to mr slimane for all his work at ysl mens and dior homme and for basically starting the skinny pant trend for guys–however the whole thing reeks of early 00′s at this point. everyone has seen it all before and is really not breaking any new ground.
i just dont see what is so relevant about spreads like mr slimane’s anymore.
thank god for meisel’s black issue of italian vogue!
cor blimey. first thing i thought, it fairly jumps at you. all white?
plus these are not new looks. its like tulsa, cept its london.
