Is The New: Stylista and Fashionista?

emma watson cover of times style magazine.jpgWhile reading Vogue UK this morning, I tripped over the casual use of “stylista.” The editors refer to Emma Watson as one in their boring non-story about how she doesn’t use a stylist. I meditated on the possible meanings while walking to work, and it went something like this:

1. Would I call someone a stylista? Isn’t that almost derogatory? As in, “Haha you look like someone on that show” ?

2. Do they have Stylista in England? Do they know how icky it is?

3. Why didn’t they call her a fashionista? Is this a case of elevator/lift translation? Or something more sinister?

4. Would I even call someone a fashionista? Or is that kind of wannabe, too? Is it only acceptable for blogs (hah)?

5. Ooh, I really want those shorts from Marc, are they on sale somewhere?

wow! she looks really nice in this picture! not much like herself, but still...

I don't tend to use the word fashionista, certainly not stylista. i usually say hipster, although granted fashionista covers a broader group than that, since i think its common usage nowadays implies someone with style and fashion, not just a trendy person like the word hipster connotes.

i think they used stylista just to come up with a term to fit emma watson. shes not an it girl and no matter what vogue may say about her interest in fashion, no one really pays attention to her in the fashion world. so the best they could come up with is that she is interested in fashion and "dresses herself"... so hence, "stylista". i dunno, its just really weird usage and a lame article about her...

Since it's Style magazine, stylista seems more appropriate to the magazine although it does sound a bit weird.

They both sound weird, but fashionista has an 'industry-y' sound to it.
I would use 'fashion rat' to describe an obsessive (like myself).
Probably not as magazine-ready a term though.

wow emma watson is very pretty but a bit lame, isnt she! taking all the credit as her own stylist when someone else has obviously put the outfits together that got her all the fashion attention in the first place . i bet anything a stylist put her into the cool burberry dress iin february and the dreamy alexander mcqueen. just have a look at her in her off-time clothes-that says it all. even the journalist in the article says that she definitely knowns someone who has styled emma.
