“Now, when someone admires my dress, I never say it is by Balenciaga or Bottega Veneta. I tell them it’s an old Phillip Lim. This neatly conveys the message that, just like everybody else, I’ve cut back on shopping and am happy to wear something by a modest label.” —From The Guardian’s story on on-line shopping.

eek! I thought the same as guest #2, while I realize that Phillip Lim is not as high end as Balenciaga, it is certainly not modest. $500 skirts as a normal and modest purchase? I think not.
This is part of what caused the credit crisis to begin with, too many of us feel entitled to everything.

I agree with all the comments here. Especially Biba. And both #8 and #9, I see both your points. I can tell the difference between Balenciaga and Phillip Lim, easily. However 90% of the population cannot. Although I assume that if someone wears Balenciaga, their friends might be familiar with both Balenciaga and Phillip Lim. If not, how else could that person's friends judge them for the amount they spend?

"Now, when someone admires my dress, I never say it is by (insert high end ready to wear label here). I tell then it's just an old (Insert Target brand here). This neatly conveys the message that, just like everybody else, I am making student loan payments instead of frantically bidding on last seasons Alexander Wang on Ebay."
