lala you are looking way too into this. the mother and daughter obviously went to the lake for a day, the daughter wanted to play in the water but can't swim. they didn't have a tube, so the mom had the brilliant idea to use a cardboard box as a raft! you may be right about her not wanting to get her shoes wet though...
