The Japanese standards are more exacting, but english speakers have created a number of haiku permutations with different numbers of syllables and line placements. Thus, poems with a 5-7-5, 3-6-3, or 5-5-7 syllable arrangement are also considered "haiku". So don't be afraid to play with the form a little!
