Free Soup for the Shopping Soul

no soup for youuu.jpgIf shopping comes with something ingestible, it’s usually champagne - not soup.

But when you’re inspired by the Great Depression, champagne drops out of the picture, replaced by the gourmet version of a bread line and a rather obvious name.

1929’s opened up temporary shop on Mott Street, and they’re serving up liquid lunch while customers shop through their up and coming designer inventory. On top of the obvious difficulties of eating soup while trying on clothes, there’s something kind of uncomfortable about this marketing ploy given the actual economic state.

We’re all for shopping if you have the money, but if there’s free food to give away, and if you’re really “inspired by” the Depression, perhaps that dedication should be channeled elsewhere and that food given to those who need it, not those still shopping in Nolita.

We’ll still check out the clothes. But we’ll grab our soup from Whole Foods.

first, aren't they worried that some klutz will spill their soup on the expensive wares?

second, instead of giving soup to *full* people how bout you give it to those who are hungry?

third, just don't make any sense!

As the spokesperson for 1929, I wanted to correct a few mistakes which appeared in the above post:
1. First, any and everyone, are welcomed into 1929 for soup and coffee - both shoppers and non-shoppers alike.
We are a boutique, and not a serving space, so we can’t accommodate large crowds. Nonetheless, we would never turn away anyone if they asked for a bowl of soup and/or a cup of coffee.
2. We are helping the masses with our sales: A portion of our earnings is donated to two Manhattan soup kitchens. If you would like more information on our donations, please contact the store and one of our staff will be more than happy to assist in giving out those contacts.
3. Our soup eaters and coffee drinkers have a space to sit and enjoy their meal. We have a seating area downstairs below the boutique. Anyone can enjoy this space.
4. You are correct; our soup is not of the Whole Foods brand. But, it is organic. We pride ourselves in benefiting our surrounding community. Therefore, we would never serve unhealthy food to those who pass through our doors.

If you would like to further discuss the matter, please feel free to contact the store.
Best,
Zoey Cohen.

Soup wasn't enough. Now there's figure skating at The 1929.
