What Do Your Nails Say About You?

tina fey for vanity fair.jpgTina Fey’s wearing little more than an American flag on the cover of January’s Vanity Fair.

The unusually sexy look for the geek chic comedienne continues in the Annie Liebovitz-shot editorial with an exposed black bra and demonic red pumps. In fact, the stylists and makeup artists manicured every inch of the actress - except for her hands.

Despite the crazy campy look, the dancing-lolling-vamping Fey wears her nails short and bare as if, gasp, they actually belong to Tina Fey. Because messing with someone’s nails is like making them wear a mask.

Some people talk with their hands, but everyone’s hands talk for them. Anxious? Your chewed up nails give you away. High maintenance? We’re terrified of your crimson claws.

[Side story: A friend of mine confessed that her boss’s nails used to make her sick. The attorney “would openly gnaw on them in court” leaving an unprofessional and unattractive set of nails in his nervous wake. Are you surprised that a Manhattan lawyer can get away with that? Don’t be. After all, the self-styled bad-ass defends killers for a living and as my friend said: “I doubt anyone ever gave him shit.”]

The moral of the story is: Your nails tell the truth about who you are. If Tina Fey’s all-American hooker garb included Revlon Raven Red on her fingertips, she would’ve looked like an actual hooker. Whereas bare nails make her Tina Fey dressed up as a hooker. Which in turn make the pictures funny - not embarrassing.

So what do your nails say about you? Are you telling people you’re a little punk rock with that Black Satin, even though you’re in bed by 11 every night? Or maybe you’re coming off as a little tacky with those tips?

my nails are tiny, i bite them. I also wear my candy apple red or bubble gum pink, which i let chip. I kind of like having doll-like nails that are uncared for. Is that bad?

Welcome!

My nails have to stay short (I work in a lab) but I love unusual nail color (navy, turquoise, deep purple) - though I'm so lazy about touch-ups that I just let the color chip away over the course of a few weeks. (Though I saw an article awhile ago saying that chipped nail polish is "in" now - see, I'm not lazy, I'm edgy!)

i compulsively chew my nails(very icky looking), so i have to get acrylics every two weeks or so. i do have the common sense keep them very short though.actually, everyone thinks theyre real, so look nothing but natural.i think if you have visibly fake nails, it just screams trashy,
especially if you have those terrible colored tips.ugh.
i usually keep mine a dark color- purple, blue, or black, though im loving dove gray right now.
sorry for the dissertation:)

Any color or no color. As long as the nails are short. Something about long nails looks trashy to me. Am I alone here?

Right, because Tina Fey has been teetering on the edge of looking like a hooker for so long that a touch of red nail polish is sure to push her over the edge.

Red nails does not a hooker make.

So true! I am terrible at painting my fingernails, so they're always plain, but I like wearing dark wine, hot pink and bright red on my toes.

really? she'd be a hooker with red nails?

i haven't seen the rest of the spread, but I think red nails might actually work-right now her look isn't so over the top that it's comical.

I haven't wanted long almond shaped painted nails since early high school. Just shows how different people are. I think I'd be embarrassed with long nails. I get them done about every 2-3 weeks, short and square with clear maybe light, light color polish. It looks cool.

Good topic! I recently realized that I'm just not a manicure girl. I tried, I really tried. It's not just the money or the time (all that TIME!) or the upkeep or the hazardous chemicals. It's more like... when I look down at my polished nails, they look like somebody else's hands.

Welcome, Glenna!

My nails are AWFUL! I think it's genetics, but they're weak, they grow in a weird shape, and they just are not pretty. I keep them short and clean and bare, but gee golly, if they grow a tad too long it's fug-city.

Thank god my toes are beautiful.

I love having my nails somewhere between long and short. Short nails are no fun and long nails can sometimes look trashy and often make simple things like typing hard. I normally go with some kind of neutral tone with my nails. They've been grey for a few months now mainly because it took me more than a few months to find grey nail polish. Also, people keep giving me compliments on them. According to one friend, my grey nails make me the coolest girl in the world.

I love how you think red nails allude to a hooker. I would be willing to bet that everyone at your office has black nail polish a la LC from The Hills.

I love nail polish because I think it's something anyone can wear and afford, and whatever color you pick says so much about you. Stylists on TV shows pay close attention to this, too (you'd never see Blair Waldorf with black nail polish).

I prefer darker colors, especially purples, blacks, and greys. Currently, I have "Brand New Skates" by OPI on, which is a really sparkly medium gray, but I can't wait to put on "Baby It's Coal Outside", which is a super sparkly black. I'd like to think my nail polish shows that I'm fun and don't want to adhere to the neutral colors deemed "appropriate" by many. I want something unexpected.

I naturally have really pretty nails and i've never ever bitten them. I usually keep them pretty short because the beds are long and give me the allusion of having medium lengthed nails even when they're short. I love wearing unconventional colors! A bright yellow/gold has been my recent favorite because it looks really nice with my dark complexion and kinda goes against the typical dark-polish-in-the-winter trend while still being edgy. I think that nail polish is so fun to play around with.. right now they're a wetnwild royal blue with a coat of Chanel noir ceramic on top to make a pretty sparkly navy.... ah, I love nail polish.

I love this post because I've recently become obsessed with painting my nails blue. I painted them red for a while, but it attracted more attention then blue does. As a student blue's not odd, but because I'm an MBA student and always networking, I've started to question what my blue nails say about me.

So when she says "tacky with those tips", is she referring to acrylics or a french manicure? I recently moved from Chicago (city) to the South and I've noticed that the french manicure is huge down here. I"ve always been the "one color is good" kinda girl. And I love all the dark stuff, although a nice light pink does look nice after a quick trip someplace warm. ;-)
