Want to Dress Like Marilyn?

marilyn monroe laughing.jpgNow might not be the best time to launch a luxury collection based on a somewhat cheesy idea, but Victor Carranza, a once-busy designer who frequently worked with Marilyn Monroe, is going for it anyway.

He’s starting his own line, House of Monroe, with designs inspired by Marilyn herself, which will launch at least at Bergdorf Goodman, probably sometime in the next year. He’s also creating an upscale denim line, dubbed Norma Jeane, to be carried by stores “like Atrium”.

It’ll be interesting to see who, if anyone, buys into the line. We’re guessing Caranza’s banking on shoppers hungry for seemingly quainter times that they weren’t even alive for.

Or, he’s just inspired by the success of Linday’s leggings.

PS. We wonder who’ll models these clothes, based on a woman whose dress size is as famous as her face…

Right, because there's been no size inflation at all between the 1950s-60s and now. I imagine a model or a celebrity will model these clothes, and it will be one of those girls they say is "curvy" or "voluptuous" but is actually just a size 4/6 with boobs--the same size Marilyn would be if she were alive today.

I think the whole idea is kind of tacky, but if it fails it won't be because Marilyn Monroe was a fat chick and there's no one else her size who anyone would want to look like. Come on now.

agreed, KLW. I love how everyone tries to use monroe's reported "size 14" dress size to make themselves feel better when just by looking at her you can see how drastically size denominations have changed since then.

i think it's ridiculous that people capitalize on her so much. Yes, she's an icon and she's going to be on coffee mugs and tshirts. But people like Lindsay Lohan using her name to sell leggings to girls who "LOVE MARILYN!!" but probably have not seen any of her movies can buy them is strange to me. There's also a Marilyn Monroe lingerie line. Who's to say she would have wanted her face on people's asses? Just because she had no one to take control of her image doesn't mean it should be a free for all.

Kate Winslet could model them.

Based on current sizes, MM was a size 6. She was only "large" compared to Audrey, et al.
I think this line could be interesting and kinda nice if they stay true to the clothe and styles. I think it might also be kinda cheezy if it's just screen printed shirts ala Target style...

PS I agree, Kate Winslet would be perfect. Just no stupid blonde starlets who think they're Marilyn's reincarnate please!!

Actually, for most of her career, Marilyn's measurements were 37C-24-35, that's a waist size to rival Posh's.

#10 you're definitely right about her waist size - but the rest of her was definitely curves.
