Would You Wear

Would You Wear Christmas Clothes?

clulesschristmas.jpgRemember in Clueless when the crew makes a “cameo at the val party”? I always thought it was great how everyone wears red and green, and Summer even wears a legit Christmas sweater while stealing the snowman from the lawn. But you also have Cher in the infamous Alaia, Tai in that plaid jacket, and Dionne wearing that pouf skirt and crop top combo complete with Santa hat.

They’re obviously dressed for the season, but no one acknowledges the fact - it just seems to be. We know it’s technically just a movie, but is Christmas dressing a product of constant exposure to Santa and his elves, or something more deliberate? Natalie says the idea of dressing “Christmasy” never occurs to her (but it does to her boyfriend), and Britt doesn’t own anything red or green, so there’s no chance of her matching the wrapping paper.

But I’m a huge fan of red and green together, and use the season as license to indulge. Maybe it’s because I lived in Florida for so long, where Christmas must be a state of mind since it looks nothing like in the movies, but I definitely think looking festive (I even approve of jingle bell jewelry) is half the battle of feeling festive.

But then, I remember overbearing Jo-Ann Fabric shoppers pairing matronly snowman sweaters with reindeer earrings and I lose my nerve again.

Thoughts?

Personally, I think its OK up until a certain age as long as your being playful and ironic and the event isn't particularly sophisticated. I totally wore a red sweater and green tights to the holiday party I threw on Saturday, and I think I pulled it off. But it's the kind of look I wouldn't wear if I knew there would be people over the age of 40 or if it was a more dignified event. The timing is everything.

It's not usually a sophisticated look. But it can be fun (says the woman who wore jingle bell earrings with cashmere (black) yesterday on a candlelight walking tour of a local historic district...)

you can totally make it holiday AND sophisticated! Like deep red velvet? I dont think it has to be red and green to be christmas...it could be just red, or just green...with white. I mean, when its christmas you just KNOW.

Red & green is doable especially if there's a distinguished plaid involved. But it's also way easier to do holiday style without the worry of looking like a helper elf if you do things like blue and silver or red and gold, with snowflake/bell accents.

Then again, I agree with Dorothy Parker. "A little bad taste is like a nice dash of paprika."

I've seen a lot of holiday stuff (cards, mainly) in shades of light blue, white and silver... definitely seems a little easier to work with for parties around this time!

I personally make a point of being festive as a proof that im a fashion conscous person. Cuz like only people who really care about clothes are going to dress up during the holiday season right? Thats always how ive seen it.

definitely!
i'm not sure about jingle bell earrings (even when paired with cashmere) but i dp love me some holiday cheer

i usually go the comical route- i first got turned onto the whole ugly sweater trend at college frat parties, and there's something about dressing like a fool, getting really into it, and letting go of your inhibitions that i just love!

conversely i do approve of people who do it a little classier- the solid red velvet sounds like a great way to do it

I think its def cute and doable, as long as you own it and make if fun, and have a bit of irony. Like on xmas im planning on wearing a cute cream dress covered in little black stars (v chanel) with a read sash belt and red lippy! Retro xmas/winter sweaters are also super cute! Sadly i live in the southern hemisphere :( . you have got to embrace the spirit of the season and have fun with out! Its but once a year!!

My friend is having a Christmas party on Friday and I'll definitely be wearing a bright red dress, but everyone else will probably be in American Apparel t-shirts in varying colors and skirts they scrounged up from Urban Outfitters.

My friends always have a Christmas sweater party where we deliberately wear really ugly Christmas sweaters, it's amazing! The uglier the better.
