Would You Wear

Would You Wear High-Waisted Undies?

high waisted undies.jpgDuring London Fashion Week I drove Faran crazy: “But Topshop! When do we get to go to Topshop??”

“Britt,” she’d say, “You have a ticket to Luella in your hand. Do not worry, we’ll get to Topshop, after we work.”

When we finally got to shop, I left with an inordinate amount of retro lingerie. At that point, I might’ve actually believed that my Spring wardrobe would be as sheer as the runways. So of course I’d need vintage slips and conservative, but still sexy underwear - Hanky Pankys weren’t going to cut it under Henry Holland’s sheer florals

Now reality’s set in and I most definitely won’t be wearing that Louise Goldin dress I thought was so cool three months ago - but I still have extremely high-waisted underwear, (which has since been duplicated at your local Urban), sitting in my drawer and I’m wondering, do I wear it?

If I do wear it under something barely sheer so that one notices a different silhouette, will they look more Bridget Jones than Betty Page, or will onlookers just wonder what the hell is going on with my lace-covered tummy?

I suppose it’s more likely that no one will notice, but out of curiosity, would you, or have you already rocked high-waisted underwear? If so, how’d that go?

yes! i have these magical (but non-Mormon) panties from that japanese lingerie place on houston and they are a) really cute and b) made of this super-soft wool and even though they only cover up as much as the pair in the picture you show, they keep your whole body warm!

Hanky Panky makes an amazing pair of high waisted lace panties that I bought and LOVE. High waisted undies are incredibly flattering, and since the whole low-rise thing has pretty much passed, no reason not to stock up.

I don't think people are looking that closely at your underwear unless you sometimes moonlight at Scores. In which case it doesn't much matter because they're coming off.

That picture up there seems to point to the possibility that this style may look better on girls with a bit more body fat. Or do they just look horrible on everybody?

i think they are really cute, but shouldn't show through your clothes. more like a retro surprise when you take your dress off...

I am wondering, if they're high waisted, do they also suck you in a bit? Sort of like spanx that are actually fashionable?

Is it just me, or does it kind of look like a man is wearing those high waisted panties.

To be honest, I don't know if I ever would. It just seems...weird.

Underwear, I'm not ashamed to admit, is the one thing that I put on with the men in my life in mind. Most of the men in my life have not been extremely fashion-forward. I can hear the "granny panties" line being dropped.

That being said, if I didn't have plans, I'd probably wear a pair. Trends come and go, but underwear lines are NEVER okay. Seems like they'd be flattering underneath certain items.

If you're curvy, well cut highwaisted panties are super sexy. However, I think they should only be attempted in public under dresses. No wedgies for this guest!

The model herself(?) certainly doesn't do the panties any justice.

I agree with 12. You need hips to wear high-waisted undies/bathing suits well. Like, 50's hourglass would look amazing. I bought a bikini with high waisted bottoms from VS last summer, and it didn't look as amazing as I wanted because I have narrow hips and a straight waist. I have what I call "double hips", like a more exaggerated version of what that model has (since I'm not as skinny as her). But the point is, this look is much better on people with a larger hip to waist ratio.

I like to wear high waisted underwear when I'm trying to do retro sexy. And I only wear them under dresses. With a cute frilly bra, it can be very sexy!

I have a pair of so-so-so adorable panties from anthropologie that aren't super high, but still hit above the hip bones. I always have a magical day when I wear them. It's kind of like that "I'm beautiful on the inside" feeling, but for fashion people.

You could try letting them peak above your skirt, in a sort of scandalous tribute to that Miu Miu collection a few seasons ago. I do my tights like that sometimes and although it has prompted some raised eyebrows, I think the look works as long as it's actually aesthetically pleasing.
Do you own the pair in the picture, or is that just an example? If you do, wearing them on the outside of your shirt = instant Prada? I know that lace has been done to death in editorials, but I've yet to see it much on the street.
Of course, I live in Austin, TX, not NYC, so I suppose your streets may be a bit more fashion-forward.

But seriously, wear the panties. Using the restroom is SO much more fun when it means you get to look at all the kitsch and lace and candy pastels hiding under your skirt.

I have a pair of high-waisted Gentry de Paris silk panties that I wear under pencil skirts and fitted dresses. They're really flattering and give you a nice, sexy silhouette. They don't work with everything in my wardrobe, but they're so great, it almost makes me want to go full-metal Joan Holloway every day!

these aren't even 'high waist' they are at the waist. just goes to show you our generation doesn't even know where our waist is.
and I'm so sick of the granny panty reference. does that refer to any underwear that is not some fredricks rhinestone encrusted gstrang?? ...always wonder bout that.

But its true, I think its a rare guy that appreciates this cut of undies. I know my boy is not a fan.. i hear it every time I wear a pair.
