Fashion Is Fun

ABS Copies Jason Wu & We Discuss

abs rips off the inauguration dress.jpgNatalie: I can’t believe all this news about ABS knocking off the Jason Wu dress. I mean who would wear that knock-off? It’s so recognizable anyone on the planet would be like, “Dude, you’re wearing Michelle Obama’s dress.”

Britt: But that’s what they do. All they do is knock off famous dresses.

Natalie: But I feel like it’s different this time. Everyone knows this dress.

Britt: But everyone knew Gwyneth’s pink Ralph Oscar dress.

Natalie: But this is different! You don’t have to follow fashion to know this dress.

Britt: I promise you people will buy it. It will sell out in minutes.

Natalie: God, I would love to meet these people, I have so many questions for them.

Britt: No you wouldn’t.

Natalie: It would be so embarrassing! I would never be able to get it out of my head, “I’m wearing a wannabe First Lady ballgown.”

Britt: Well if you see anybody in it, you should tell them they could’ve bought it at Jessica McClintock five years ago.

Natalie: It’s not even pretty.

Britt: I know, I know.

guest 7 maybe you should read the post, at the end they mention how they don't think michelle's dress is even pretty, and that's where some of this reaction is coming from. fashionista should make a post explaining from their fashion educated points of view why they didn't like her dress.
but i also agree wearing such a recognizable dress is weird, do girls wear this to the prom or something?

ok, about the j.w. dress, she looked exquisite & elegant. AND she was supporting a new up and coming designer. a brilliant decision on her part. and it truly shows what a supporter of the fashion industry she really is.

as for knockoffs. lame.

Great, thanks for telling us again that you all think the dress is fugly, and that anyone who would buy it is to be avoided.

I can't defend ABS in general, but if there was ever a dress for them to knock off, why not this one? It is a little bridal MY taste but it IS pretty, and Michelle wore the hell out of it.

It's like fashionista can't even fathom that some regular ladies out there might want to wear this dress BECAUSE it looks just like Michelle's. Maybe because they're excited about fashion for the first time in a long time? Guess what, that doesn't make them bad people. A renewed interest in fashion is just what the economy needs right now, lord know you're always nattering on about how we should pay $600 for a fug pair of Margielas to stimulate the economy.

Posts like this make me think this blog is sort of slow-motion trainwrecky.

the dress was fug, and knockoffs are a terrible thing that sadly exist. Just because Michelle Obama is the first lady doesn't mean she has to be a style icon, honestly I've liked hardly any of the outfits she has worn.

Really? Why would you reproduce this conversation? The amount of condescension in this post only slightly supersedes its lameness. Maybe you wanted edgy? or caustic? but you are about as edgy as a pink Juicy Couture tracksuit on shopbop. and about as caustic as anyone with the name Britt could be-- read: so, like, not. So drop it, and I'll be dropping off to Refinery 29 or the fashion spot, because your responses and posts lately have been dullsville, u.s.a. xoxo, thoroughly unimpressed and uninspired. and p.s. fashion is about imagination, not like, being in florida and, like, talking about Jason Wu and Alexander Wang, like, endlessly. ohmygod.

Did you guys see this, about "fashion's unsettled relationship with its newest icon"? It suggests the fashion industry doesn't know what to do with Michelle Obama because she is black, and because she is only marginally interested in fashion and style.

I'm confused about why you guys are in such a state of shock? Is it faux shock? Because ABS remakes popular dresses every year, it just so happens that this year they remade the First Ladies dress, and on some level that's a compliment. At least the first lady is just as big as any of the Hollywood Elite, maybe this will help her capture that attention of America as she moves foward with her key issue of Vetrans Families!

If there weren't special ladies like Natalie and Britt to bring (truthful) observations about, the elite like Michelle would have stylists making icons and new 'it' girls and boys every day. They are the population control that bring a critical eye to the game. Why suggest this topic is boring? They even go out of their way to bring the issue up in a cute and casual way, i.e the dialogue. To outwardly disagree is invited I'm sure, but to suggest that this site is going down, or they're snobby is laughable because you're still here, aren't you?

LOL, population control. So if Fashionista weren't the arbiters of style, then "elites" like Michelle Obama would be appointing the It girls of fashion? erm, yeah, I'm sure that's exactly what a Harvard educated lawyer and First Lady would do ... if only she were allowed! *sob*

Many readers are style arbiters themselves, even if/when they disagree with Fashionista. And disagreeing with them doesn't make one a hater (although calling people "haters" does make you 12 :p).

The only reason you people like that dress is because Michelle Obama wore it, and everyone is only going psycho because she's so like-able, so in turn the dress is like-able. But compared to so many other dresses MIchelle could have worn that were infinitely better in comparison (RODARTE ANYONE?!), this dress is simply, just plain average.

PS - Guest # 18 thinks she's so smart and politically correct, but we all know the reason she's pissed off is because she secretly thought she had an impeccable, heightened sense of style and absolutely adored that Jason Wu dress, until fashionista brought her crashing back down to reality..

YES! People who agree that Michelle's outfits were awful! I reckon this dress was a little better than that snot coloured dress and jacket combination that she wore. I saw a dress that was designed for her my Armani and it was very impressive and then she chose how many dud outfits? Very disappointing. Considering what a big deal the inauguration is in the US (I'm from Australia) and how much coverage the event gets worldwide, AND keeping in mind how long people are going to be looking back at pictures of this day (which will be a LOT considering Obama's your first black president), I'd have thought she'd wear something smart and most of all CLASSIC AND TIMELESS. She looked horrendous and she'll probably be cringing at those photos in about a month.

she could have wore some high end designer like oscar de la renta and snub the small end designers like wu. i think what she did should be looked at as a sign of how amazing the obamas are. i thought the dress was really nice...maybe not the MOST amazing piece from a fashion insiders point of you but she had to choose something that would satisfy fashion insiders and outsiders. i think picking wu was remarkable and all you guys can do is mock that you not only didn't like it but that another mainstream designer knocked it off. i'm ashammed fashionista. you guys have gone WAY down hill lately. less posts and more importantly..... less quality.

You guys can make all the snarky comments you want but she is on the March cover of Vogue and way more deserving than Blake Lively, IMHO. And she is a style icon for regular women everywhere who can't afford the clothes that you fashion snobs drool over and who would rather dress a little more down to earth. Basically she is a regular person, not a model, who we can all relate to. And when you're black, and there aren't a lot of people who look like you, that can a breath of fresh air. So clammer all over Miss. Stam if you must, but honestly, who could even pick her out of a crowd of typical tall scrawny blonde girls? I will take Michelle and her dress, thank you. She is the first "First Lady" in a long time with an ounce of style. It could have been worse...it could have been Hilary.

PS I like Britt and Nat and their writing style. Sometimes I disagree with them. But I still love you guys. It would be boring if everything on this site was all yay and happy.

Haven't you ever seen a dress that you just really loved, even though other people were kind of like, "uh, really?", and you respect their opinions and all, but you just really liked the dress, and don't they always say that true style is wearing what you love, and not worrying about what other people will think?

Because she is lovable and charming and first lady that doesn't mean she is style icon. I know we are dying for another Jackie, but lets face it- Michelle isn't style icon and every comparison to jacky o is propaganda and populism By the way i am a big fan of M.O. and I think she's going to be great first lady and fresh change but her fashion sense is so ordinary.

And the dress? It's smart political decision to choose Jason Wu in sense of economic crises and I respect that, but come on people it's a plain dress, nothing unique, nothing historical.
