Adventures in Copyright: Margiela for the Masses
By Britt Aboutaleb
The most successful rip-offs, the things that fly off shelves, are the products directly modeled on something that everyone from the die-hard fashion fan to the suburban high school girl is familiar with.
More Carrie Bradshaw’s Dior gladiators than Margiela.
But we’re guessing these have been knocked off because Rachel Bilson rocked the nude version of the half-sandal, half-boot shoe with some on trend boyfriend jeans last summer, not because Margiela’s the new cerulean.
But will they actually sell? Can Steve Madden market this $170 shoe to the mall going masses? And if so, can it come with an informational packet on how incredible Martin Margiela is and what he’s done for fashion in the past twenty-five plus years?
The best part is you can actually see how insanely luxurious the leather is on the Margiela shoe through this teeny tiny online picture and if they weren’t sold out everywhere, it’d only cost you an extra $400 for a million times more quality.

only a fraction of the cost of the margiela shoe is because of quality
do you know how high the markup still is?
these two shoes serve different purposes.. some girls need a quick fix and don’t have a lot of money for a fashion shoe which isn’t versatile or practical
Only $400? I wasn’t aware the dollar had lost that much value yet.
I have no doubt that the more Margiela shoes are higher quality. But obviously this type of shoe is a passing trend. In times like this, splurging on passing trends just seems stupid.
yes this post is stupid
this makes my brain hurt lol.i LOVE the margiela shoes but 1)i cant find them anywhere.and i mean anywhere. 2)im not sure i could spend that amount on them if i were to find them, esp. since, as #3 said, they are just a trend.
that being said, i sure as hell wont spend $170 on steve maddens, of all things, when i could use that money to put towards better shoes and theyll probably be on sale in a month anyway.
but ive never had knock offs before, and i dont want to start now.
i am dubious of the quality of the margiela’s. while perusing one of my favorite blogs, garbage dress, i noticed an entry entitled “memories with martin.” her margiela’s snapped in half after only 6 wears! just goes to show…

I love my Margiela pieces, but he’s definitely a designer you buy because you love the design, not because the quality of his materials is fantastic. Better than Steve Madden, sure, but we’re not talking Bottega Veneta here.
Oh boy – you better believe that Madden is known to knock off designer, it absolutely breaks my heart. I’ve actually seen him and his team peruse designer shoe salons for their next up and coming “inspiration.” Yikes.
great blog!
until next time,

equally questionable, is that the steve madden version is a “rachel zoe pick” on piper lime.
this post was on a different blog last week (i’m blanking on which right now, but they even mentioned bilson’s outfit). why don’t you guys credit your sources?
everybody knew it was coming, the ol ‘this post was on a different blog and why dont you credit blah blah woof woof.’ listen kid, fashionista wasn’t on http://www.xoxo.teenblog.blogspot.com perusing the site for adventures in copyright possibilities.
some people need to chill and get a little perspective.
it was on division street http://divisionstreet.us/?p=1283
That garbagedress blog is great! Thanks for sharing it – I am going to add it to my list of daily blogs.
Umm.. I’d like to know how much Fashionista pays it’s staffers when $600 for trendy shoes is a no-brainer. Do you guys not pay rent? Student loans? Health insurance? Or are you just racking up major credit card debt?
lawl @ cerulean.
#14-
I highly doubt the Fashionista girls (and guys) actually wear $600 shoes. I’d love to know for sure one way or another, but I’ve always gotten the impression that the Fashionista attitude/vision/whatever is a poor man’s Vogue- both Vogue and a post like this are a shopping guide for the wealthy, bored, and trendy, but unlike Vogue, Fashionista writers aren’t also actually wearing the stuff they’re promoting.
you guys blatantly ripped off a story from Division Street. adjust your post and credit them.
I have the Margiela sandal boot and the same thing in a pointy toe boot and the leather is amazing. And they are actually very comfortable and I don’t look like everyone else in ankle boot s when I wear them. I don’t know if they are worth the full retail price, but the quality is there. #6- what happened to your friend is probably a flukey thing. The same thing happened to my friend with the YSL Tributes.
hi guest 18: i don’t read division street. we always credit our sources, through linking, tags and often by name. we have no reason not to.
this particular comments section has me thinking: what would the comments section of every site look like if every site allowed (and attracted) comments? for example, what would vogue.com be like if everyone could have their say?
food for thought -
love you guys!
Wasn’t this on Division Street earlier this week?
Britt, you mean guest 12, not 18!
sorry fashionursta!! btw i’m so jealous of your margielas :)
Listen just admit you stole the story for a smaller lessor known blog. It is very obvious there is no way you just stumbled upon the same shoes as they did. I think you have lost more credibility bc you won’t just admit your mistake.
I actually like the margiela shoe a lot. I have a similar idea for a tall boot once. It’s v cute.
#20- Something like this, I imagine:
1- “da dress is liek so hawt”
2- “Nuhuh ur an idiot who cant spell lurn 2 type dumaaaaaaassss!!11!1!”
3- “Can’t we please stay on topic? This is a post about S/S 09, after all.”
4- “Wow! Young Pam Anderson sex tape here: ”
5- “It’s Obama’s fault!”
6- “This designer should be ashamed of himself. As a CHRISTIAN, I don’t support young girls dressing in such revealing clothing. What sort of example is he setting for our YOUNG PEOPLE?”
…and on and on and on…
ONLY an extra $400? Are you fucking kidding me?
wow i bet the same people who are attacking Britt are the same people who check this blog daily
lighten up and keep up the good work fashionista
does anyone have a link of where i can purchase the actual margielas. not that i can afford it but, i have been drooling over them for quiet some time and would like a concrete location at which i can drool and try to practically justify the purchase. xo
i find it rather offensive that your staff is here feeling the need to push the purchase of $400+ shoes when indeed, the knock-offs themselves are in the price range which some would consider to be a luxury. i often enjoy this site but wouldn’t mind if you focused on fashion for the masses a little more often; it is probably more in touch with what a lot of people want, given the current status of the economy.
also Racked covered Division Streets article before you guys plagiarized it.

For a passing trend (and it will pass, in record time I’d imagine) I think the cheaper version will do the trick for me. Love the Margielas though, but the whole world is in the beginning of a fucking recession, so let’s be real here. I’m not going to tear up my gas bill in favour of the “quality” version when the other pair are just as cute, and somewhat affordable.
