DABA’s Get a Book Deal

the daba girls at gemma.jpgThis morning, ex-Lucky Beauty writer Dawn Spinner came out as a DABA in the New York Timesprofile of Dating A Banker Anonymous, a blog for women having a rough time with their men due to the tanking economy.

Well now we hear Dawn and her fellow DABA’s, Laney Crowell, a beauty editor at StyleCaster and lawyer Megan Petrus are getting a book deal.

What will the book be about? How to stay beautiful without your boyfriend’s black Amex? Where to shop when you have to spend your own money?

The saddest part is, if you’re smart enough to land a job at one of the country’s top magazines, you probably could’ve penned a book on your own merit, not your boyfriend’s financial downfall.

The NY Times article was fatuous. I can't believe DABA is getting any attention.

I couldn't make it past the first paragraph of the article. What exactly will be the point of this book? I really do wish they would stop publishing books that make women look so vapid and needy.

Better idea, let's make a reality show out of throwing them in the streets where ACTUAL struggle exists.

I appreciate you pointing out that they could have penned a book about their brains instead of their money leeching struggle. . . but I'm still a little grossed out. Maybe I should stop being judgemental. . .hey, they like their lives!

Maybe this Dawn Spinner woman is smart, maybe. But obviously shallow . . . She provides the most offensive quote in the article “One of his best friends told me that my job is now to keep him calm and keep him from dying at the age of 35,” Ms. Davis said. “It’s not what I signed up for.” Because you know, when you marry someone, you only sign up for expensive dinners, not supporting them when they are having problems.

I think that they deserve their i-bankers. I agree they sound like shallow gold diggers.... but I don't think that i-bankers are doing their jobs because they actually like it, they want the money, the "success", the power, and they are just as shallow for being into the girls who are just into their money aka they want a trophy wife. So why do we care?

Is the publishing industry retarded? All it takes is 3 days or so of obnoxious blog entries plus some free press to get a book deal? What could they possibly write about that anyone would want to pay to read? Am I missing something?

When all you contribute to a relationship is a gigantic expense line item, I can see why you'd get dumped when the economy starts to suck. Geez.

#8, yes they are shallow gold diggers. and there are a lot of really horrible bankers. but then again, i'm a banker, i'm a woman, and i have a nice boyfriend who is not a banker, and i spend my money on nice fashion, a nice apartment, and my savings. the money is nice but i like my job (even in these tough times). i would not waste my hard-earned money on bottle service for hot men, no matter how slutty.

"The saddest part is, if you’re smart enough to land a job at one of the country’s top magazines, you probably could’ve penned a book on your own merit, not your boyfriend’s financial downfall."

I am not nitpicking Britt here, but it really doesn't take any intelligence to write 150 words about the newest lip gloss. It's not as if these girls are fashion eaditors or features writers or even copyeditors. They're sorostitutes biding their time until they cash in, i.e., marry bankers.

And to answer #9, yes, the publishing industry is retarded. The good news: since the book publishing industry is slashing royalties, these ladies (*cough*) will see a couple thou each, at most. And will be despised even more widely than today! What a "deal"!

Please don't say you have to be smart to get a job at a top magazine. Everyone knows those bitches are undeserving Ivy Leaguers who got into college and get all their jobs through their rich daddies.

Unfortunately these women and people like them will suffer the least throughout the financial crisis. I only hope it gets bad enough that the good people of this city break into their Park Avenue apartments and torture them and their financial industry husbands (who caused this crisis)in Times Square.

I wish everyone well. that said, calling these situations relationships is like calling a long term arrangement with a paid escort a relationship. the women dont' know any better though. I blame their parents, particularly their mothers for training them to be nothing more than whores.

Uhhhh, guys..... it's called satire.

It was a tongue in cheek site that was good enough for the NY Times to fall for it, and clearly most of you too.

And before someone cites the NY Times as never being taken in by a fake before, read Jayson Blair's stuff.

i hadn't yet seen that blog, so i clicked the link and....lo and behold, following the anti-feminist banter, there is a picture of former boss (a former editor at a magazine i used to intern at). apparently she's one of the blog founders and somehow i'm not surprised. for working in the fashion dept (which is notoriously time consuming), she wasn't working all that often.

I'm desperately hoping their deal is for a novel. Heck, the blog is funny if it's satire, I'd read some (more) of their fiction.

BTW, Blair stole his articles from someone else. These girls made it up completely. They have him beat by miles thanks to their originality.

VAPID and utterly ridiculous - these girls need to get a life. They are a disgrace to the hard working single women of NY who have jobs, work hard and have formed strong identities. The fact that they have formed a group to discuss the lack of finances from their boyfriends/husbands is so utterly pathetic. GO HELP A CHARITY

I just read the link and it's total satire.
I think it takes a good poke at those living in these worlds who DO take themselves too seriously (and they're out there, walking among us).

I know that times are tough and we're all a little on edge but it's not meant to be serious.

Oh Dawn....I've seen you, sweetie. I've seen you in those short skirts and fitted tops and trust me, after just one child you are going to BALLOON up like the cankle, thick hipped, ugly-on-the-inside cow that you are (it happens, trust me). I doubt you're husband will think he signed up for that, darling.

Here's a bit of advice from an old crone, loose the attitude, gain a soul.

I...guess...it's satire, but it's not over-the-top enough to be really funny. The story about the mistress who was annoyed because her boyfriend yelled at her for being 24 while he has to fire 20 people made me sad and a bit sick inside.

And I had avoided this story for the first three days of buzz because I knew it would make me sick.

Is it the decline of the American female or Darwin's theory of evolution taken to it's logical human conclusion? Alpha males and alpha males at the peak of our species' civilization; to think this is the best we could do.

Yeah OK so the picture is indeed bad, the blog is horrible and I'm astonished now that I come to realize how normal my life was living with a MOTHER who is a banker. It makes me ashamed as a woman to think that these women are serious so I'm just going to hope this is satire...

DABA is entertaining, but it total Bull Crap. Like any of these girls (and there's only two of them btw) has ever dated an actual banker. Sorry... but a one-night-stand hit and run doesn't count honey. Maybe one of them has dated an i-banker analyst (aka, cube monkey doing mindless work all day long). Give me a break. What has our world come to???
