Dolce & Gabbana: Trouble?

dolce spring 09 ad.jpgTo: Tips@Fashionista.com

From: FadeIn@Italy.com

Looks like Dolce & Gabbana are goin’ down. It appears Neiman Marcus is pulling D&G from all of its stores. The troubled company has been on a downward spiral for months now, very quietly. No more fancy showroom on 5th Ave - now unremarkable digs downtown. No more Director of Operations for the NY/US office, with no replacement. Now it looks like they’re getting pulled, and not just at Neiman, but other major/specialty stores in the US. Watch and wait.

Um, we’re not totally sure about the above, but if you are, you know what to do. On a side note, is this why they’re launching a controversial ad campaign and $36 eyeshadow? Stay tuned…

I'm more fond of Italian designers like Prada, Valentino, and Armani; if not Gucci. D&G always seemed like the poor man's Versace.

You could also argue Dolce & Gabbana were the risker, sexier, and younger man's Versace. I mean, let's be real... Versace went through a pretty bad phase in the early 00's. I wouldn't call Dolce & Gabbana 'the poor man's Versace' but just... different.

Yeah, heard about this in December when an insider told us that D&G let go of its NY office. From that point on, I knew there was trouble

Well, it is funny that this rumor should surface now, obviously with economic affairs in such a state it only follows... But I've been hearing a lot of negative chat from my italian friends about the company for quite a while now, at least over a year...

I've always loved Dolce as much as Versace (a lot) but recently I think they have TANKED. I would rather have a re-worked and interesting corset dress than fucking PYJAMAS! and #12, retarts? is that a typo or two insults in one? either way it makes you look like a retard.

Isn't it interesting that there are a bunch of fake d&g bags around. Isn't that a sign that you have made it big?

I work for a retailer and we dropped Dolce & Gabbana in our store several seasons ago. We finally dropped D&G for spring. It never sold and the prices were too high compared to other brands. Customers would always come in and ask for it, but just look at it and never buy it.

This definitely has the potential to be VERY true. My friend works in the Contemporary buying office at NM and she has told me countless times that D&G (note: not Dolce & Gabbana) has terrible, terrible full-price sales.

There is always a plethora of D&G on the final call sale racks. That never surprised me because their prices are too high for the Contemporary offering.

I'm guest 17, and you guys need to clarify the difference between Dolce & Gabbana and D&B by Dolce & Gabbana.

Two very different lines.

The "controversial ad campaign" is from Dolce & Gabbana, NOT D&G, as is the eyeshadow.

People! Do you know the difference between Dolce & Gabbana and D&G?!! D&G is the younger, diffusion line!!

FASHIONISTA, this is irresponsible reporting. You are interchanging the two names as if they are one and the same.

I remember reading some stories in WWD, and let me explain my understanding on this -

The decision to move the offices downtown was made over a year ago. The D&G showroom has always been in Soho, and it seems they wanted to move the rest of the offices down there, into some fresh new digs. I've heard they're really nice, too...

Some stores will be dropping the D&G line...reason being: pretty much all sales will go through Milan now, the way Dolce has always been. Lots of stores don't travel to Milan market, so they won't be buying D&G. That also means they won't need as much showroom capacity for the line.

It's a huge company, earning money in many different markets. A US slowdown won't come close to taking them out, don't worry! Pretty shameless rumor-mongering.

d&g and dolce are obviously a part of the same brand. They're strategized together, so what happens with one definitely affects the other.

THIS IS A FALSE REPORT.
FC IS A VERY IRRESPONSIBLE "REPORTER".

For the past few seasons there have been changes in the way D&G is both sold and marketed. D&G is tightening their image and positioning themselves as a much more exclusive brand. They are trying to shed their image as a "bridge collection" and stop being seen as a little brother collection to Dolce & Gabbana. It is a very similar approach to what Miu Miu took a few years back. This means, in the case of D&G, pulling their merchandise out of department stores and more tightly controlling distribution.
Additionally, they have pulled their advertising from more junior level magazines and are focusing on more exclusive titles.
Furthermore, it is apparent that FC has not been invited to the new showroom on Lafayette. It is multi-leveled, brand spanking new and huge. It marks the first time that both of the brands will be in one place, at one time, creating a more of a focused vision for the entire Dolce/D&G lifestyle.

AGAIN, THIS IS VERY ERRONEOUS "REPORTING".

The writer of the original comment at the top of this page is extremely irresponsible for publishing statements that they have not investigated. This kind of practice could be construed as libel.

Irresponsible, and erroneous commenting, investigating and reporting. People who have time to report such FALSE INFORMATION and have their "news" spread around the internet need to find something way more constructive to do with their obviously ample amount of free time. Remember, your irresponsible comments reach people who actually might work for the company, people who have respect/pride for the work they do- try getting a sense of that off of your petty and unsubstantiated rumors.
