B for Beauty

Like Steroids, for Lashes

steroids for lashes.jpgI’ve professed my love of lashes to you before.

While I remain clueless to the rest of the beauty industry, lashes I know and love and thus regularly spend $27 every couple of months on Dior. But you couldn’t pay me $27 a day to take drugs to make my lashes longer. Especially not when said drugs may cause “red, itchy eyes and changes in eyelid pigmentation” and costs roughly $4 a day.

Because, ew.

The New York Times has a rundown on Latisse, the latest drug from Allergan (the geniuses who brought you Botox). Latisse has the same formula as the medication used for glaucoma, a formula whose side effects include longer, fuller lashes (“25 percent longer, 106 percent thicker and 18 percent darker”) and costs about $120 a month.

There’s something kind of asinine about using a drug that’s actually meant to cure a disease for purely cosmetic reasons (this includes Botox), but Latisse already has tons of fans and is expected to be an $80 million business by 2012.

So, would take drugs to make yourself prettier?

latisse isn't a pill. it's a wand-type product that you brush on.

well i don't know about this product in question but my mom uses eyedrops that make her lashes longer and i've been wondering for a really long time why nobody makes a product that just makes your lashes longer, but doesn't really cure anything. I guess this kind of answers my question...

It can also darken the color of your eyes, which I find really weird.

I'd love to have thicker, darker lashes, but not with those side effects! I'll stick with my Diorshow Iconic.

#3 is right. It can turn green or hazel eyes brown. I'll stick with my beloved L'Oreal Telescopic, thanks.

Shame on you guys for not doing your research before promoting this to your young readers. It can change the colors of your eyes, and has other weirdo side effects.

No thanks.

guest 6, considering that fashionista referred to the product as "asinine" i don't think they're promoting anything, nor do i think the fashionista reader is particularly young. sorry but i really hate it when people are like "shame on you" and they haven't even read the post, it's really annoying and totally kills any kind of conversation people are trying to have in the thread. so back to the point: no, i would never take drugs to enhance my beauty, the risks just aren't worth it, EVER.

#6, this blog isn't promoting this at all, they are just trying to start a discussion. I am a fashionista reader, and I'm 13 and I think lot of their readers have the sense not to think -"ooh, I'll go and pump my self full of shit to make me look like Daria in that Lancome advert". Please credit the yuonger generations with a little intelligence.

So creepy. I am very happy with my blue eyes and normal-toned eyelids thanks. If i wanted glaucoma medicine to make my eyes red I would get medical marijuana. To make my lashes thicker, I will stick with stilla mascara and the occasional press-on lash.

oh and for those of you with beautiful brown eyes, not worried by a change of pigmentation in your retina? it can darken the WHITES of your eyes too. um no.

Question: Botox is a disease, right? Meaning, it's not meant to cure a disease, as the post suggests, is it? Unless aging is a disease, which, judging from television commercials, seems to be the case.

Just wondering. Thanks.

I too am a super fan of eyelashes. I´d love to look like Daisy Duck flirting and whipping her eyelashes. I am middle eastern so while I do not have any complaints about length I love volume, the fuller the better. Anyways I started using Diorshow because of all the recommendations on this site and some magazines, and although it is not bad it´s not awesome either, to my disspointment. So, if like me you love full fan like lashes I totally recommend Lancome Hypnotic. I´ve used forever and have tried many mascaras in that time, none has topped it yet...

Well, considering I already have dark eyelids (skin) and eyes and only 10 out of 280 people in the study had TEMPORARY redness and itchiness... I'd say I'd be open to trying it. I'd love to have longer lashes.
But does anyone know if you just use it for like a month or two or until you get the desired effect and then you can just stop and enjoy your longer lashes for forever? Or is it like something that has to be umm... maintained? Just wondering...

12: Botox isn't a disease, botulism is. Botox is made from botulin which is the bacterial toxin that causes botulism - scientists take the bacteria, dilute it, and treat it so that it causes temporary muscle paralysis. Its original intent was to treat eye muscle disorders (which it is still used for today) and it is also used to treat other medical conditions, like crossed eyes, neck pain, and excessive sweating.

You can buy a tube of revita lash for the same price, a tube lasts for 4-6 mos, and it works-unbelievably well. On over-plucked eyebrows too!

No need for drug taking girls...Anyone heard of 'eyelash extensions'? They're brilliant! I get a top up once 4 - 6 weeks ;) It takes a bit of time (try and get a girl who's got lots of experience) but worth it nonetheless and totally safe. Just google xtreme eyelashes. It appears to be only available in Australia and NZ... so if you're in the US or Canada, may have to do some further searching! Have fun.

Or you could just steal your grandma's glocoma medicine. It's the same thing, the longer lashes are a side effect of the drops.
