Lara Stone: Icon Yet?

lara stone paris vogue cover.jpgThe Lara Stone Vogue Paris is in and it is, as promised, all Lara.

In the first few pages, the issue declares Lara the “rare bird” of the new model generation, likening her to a combination between Kate Moss, Lauren Hutton, and pretty much any famous supermodel you can think of.

Olivier Zahm, in his interview with her, proclaims Lara “a model of a different kind, one you don’t see very often” with the body of a “1970s Playboy model” and the face of a child. He also asks why she never called him back and that he would very much like to have a glass of wine with her later to which she politely giggles.

The Lara-only editorials are shot by a handful of the best fashion photographers out there including Terry Richardson, Peter Lindbergh, Hedi Slimane and an amazing fashion spread from Nan Goldin. And between each editorial are artistic interpretations of Miss Stone by Peter Beard, Rupert Shrive, Franceso Vezzoli, and others, all ringing with a distinctly iconic tone.

Okay, we get it. Lara is smoking. But she hasn’t exactly reached icon status yet. So is it just us or does this all seem a bit premature?

We think you should decide for yourself, so we’ve included here both interviews from the issue with Lara - a quick Q&A and her longer interrogation by Olivier - because we think her words might add a new dimension to the debate (Ok, not really, we just think models talking is always fun). As always, let us know what you think.

i really love lara stone, but i wouldn't say she's an icon yet. i think for a model to be an icon, people who don't pay attention to models or fashion would have to know who she is. like kate moss, or agyness deyn. they're everywhere, and my friends who really don't care about fashion know who they are.
that isn't lara stone.

It's not premature, theyre probably just noticing that she has great potential to be an icon. She is absolutely amazing in all the shoots I've seen her in. She definitely is a rare breed.

I'm slightly confounded with the whole Lara obsession. I've always found hera to be incredibly one-dimensional which, to me, kind of opposes the concept of a supermodel. I thought a supermodel was a dynamic, unique, versatile creature whose beauty could be interpreted through the eyes of many artists in many different ways. I mean.. Ok, it makes sense that Alex W, Camilz and the W gang adore her and even moreso that Carinne is enamored but seriously, a whole issue? Of French Vogue? Come on now.

I interned at W this entire summer and honestly Alex White and Camilla Nickerson has exquisite taste and based on the concepts they style around for shoots, she has always delivered... I guess it's just a matter of opinion.

i don't think that carine is so much saying that she devoted an entire issue to lara because she ALREADY is an icon, but because she deserves to be. and i agree whole heartedly. not many models exude what lara exudes.

Nan Goldin is not a fashion photographer.

She is a documentarian and fine artist who takes the rare fashion photo.

agyness had a whole issue of i-d devoted to her and she wasn't even as established as lara is now at the time

doesn't anna wintour refuse to allow any models currently working to be called an icon except for kate? i think that should be the law.

People like her because she is a real woman, she has a body and loves to show it off. It's like the love affair people have with Christina Hendricks on Mad Men...people fawn all over them because they don't starve themselves and look generic.

I think she is an icon. I think people confuse the word icon with celebrity. People think the reason Kate Moss is an icon is because we know everything about her love life etc.. If you asked just an average joe what campaigns she had been in, I doubt they would be able to list them. But they would be able to tell you every guy she has dated.

And people know Agyness because she's such a gimmick (in a good way - bleached pixie cut etc) and little teeny boppers all over the world relate to the happy vibe she gives off.
Whereas Lara looks like she is going to kill someone..
SOOO she is an icon, just not one that a 12 year old girl will relate to as easy, and hyper-fantasize about meeting.

Yeah, I like that she has a "body" (at least by model standards,) but I seem to be the only person in the world who just doesn't think she's pretty.

Yup, definitely more of a novelty than an icon, but there's still time!

im conflicted about the icon status thing...I feel like shes about gemma ward circa 2006 level. Like if you know anything about models and fashion it seems impossible that you wouldn't know who she is, but if I would ask anyone in my family, they'd have no idea (they're dutch too!).

um. side note, i've got such a girl crush on her.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this chick! She's not an icon yet but I 'm dying to have what they had in the 90s with THE supers being the icons of that day and for years to come. You have to create new icons. I think our supers now are Lara, Stam, Lily Donaldson, Chanel Iman, Jourdann Dunn, Coco Rocha, Karlie Kloss, and I have to say Agyness coz she's like a typhoon blowing through the fashion world.

Who have I missed?
