Mayle Says, “Surprise! Not Closing Yet”

mayle tag.jpgBack when Jane Mayle announced she would be closing up shop next month, everyone shared pretty much the same reaction: Sadness and disappointment with an undertone of “I’ve got to hit their next sale.”

So you’d think that today’s news of Mayle holding off her closing until April - and tucking a “highly limited-edition collection” into the crunched time space, too - would have brought only one response from everyone, but maybe not so.

One half of the Fashionista office was all, “Yay! Another shot at cute Mayle clothes before summer! Hope there are little dresses.”

The other half: “Whoa, really? That seems a little sneaky - Getting sales off all the hype from closing? And while everyone’s been clamoring to get a piece from her last, or what was her last, collection? It’s a little off-putting, though I’m sure it’ll all be great stuff.”

So is this kind of like a backhanded piece of good news?

We’ll think about this afternoon - But of course, see you at the store, right?

seems a bit unethical although i wouldnt be surprised if we see designers doin this quite a bit as a sort of durvival of the fittest technique.

Certainly I think it made a lot of people rush to get their hands on whatever Mayle they could, but her clothing is so beautiful that I'm pleased she'll be around a little longer. Now if only she'd change her mind and stay in business for the long term.... She is my favorite by far.

But I'm pretty certain there was no strategy here--just a response to the demand for her clothing and the love for her line.

Actually Jane had alot of fabric left over from past seasons. She was going to re-cut dresses for the sample sale, but her store's lease was longer than she thought and is now ending in April. I mean honestly how long can you keep a store open with just sale merch into the spring season? I think its great. I am really excited to get some extremely limited and rare pieces. AND for the eventual sample sale.

Thanks for the info, guest #3. I thought she might have fabric to spare and I also figured she might remake some of her rarer pieces or greatest hits.

I think it's great! I have a bunch of old Mayle pieces that I get a TON of use out of. Plus, you never worry about seeing anyone else in the same thing. Her stuff is always gorgeous.

Great post. My emotions are torn here. I love Mayle and am happy she will be designing more, but at the same time I spent over a thousand dollars on her clothing this season, which I would not have done if I knew it wasn't her last season. It is not that I don't love the pieces I bought, but I never would have justified their full cost in this economy.

Also, I don't really believe that she didn't know how long her lease was. She planned the closing of her entire business around this date, how could she not know?!

I am not going to defend Jane (I am poster #3) but her business was pretty randomly run and I am sure if you have any clue about Mayle you would know that Jane was only ever really focused on teh creative side - the look of her shop the clothing design, look books etc. Prior to my move she told me about recutting things for teh sample sale which I plan on returning for. I was excited. I am sure that it makes more financial sense for her to actually sell these garments for more at the shop than re-cut fabric and sell dresses for $175. I think that creating a pop up shop was a last minute thought. I am sorry that you spent $1000 on clothes this season. In the past 5 years I have spent over $100K at Mayle and I don't even know my 10 year total - I am sure its more like $200K. I too was a little disappointed as the girls at the shop are great and hold things for me, and since I moved I will have to buy things over the phone sight unseen as there is a no hold policy for teh pop up shop AND I am unemployed. At the end of the day jane had to make a decision for her business- and I am not judging her - nor am I unhappy. I am elated that I am going to have more Mayle even if just for a one month period and its bought sight unseen.

Guest #7/3, Thanks for all the info ('m guest #2/4). Do you know if there will still be a sample sale now that Jane is doing a new collection and, if so, will it be in the store or after the lease ends? I've spent thousands (tens of thousands) on Mayle too and will wear it forever. I'd just love to get some more pieces. Also, will the new collection be in the Elizabeth St store only or will Barneys, Opening Ceremony LA and other key stockists get pieces?

I too am thrilled there will be more Mayle--and I love the girls at the shop, especially Elise and Christine. I'll miss everything about Mayle--the girls, the shop, the Red Currant candles and the beautiful clothes.

I can't imagine spending $200,000 on clothes from one designer, but I'm happy for you, Guest #7! Must be a nice place to be. Hope I can do that someday. :)

Well la di da, #7 (I am #6). I make $30k a year and live in NYC, so $1k is a lot for me to spend. Thanks for the condescending tone, though. It is so painfully apparent when someone's self worth is based on the size of her closet.

And you're right, I'm just a peasant who doesn't have "any clue about Mayle." I thought she was a brilliant, talented designer, but she must be a complete airhead if she can't even figure out what month her lease runs out. It must be hard being so creative.

#6 do you have some confience or esteem issue? I lived in new york for 15 years- I just moved and honestly, living in that over priced city and making $30K is your choice and its your choice to spend $1000. I am not getting into a fight with you, all I did was offer up some information to other posters that I was privy too. They didn't seem to have an issue with it. As for my tone being condescending, you have some nerve. I don't know you, you don't know me and are clearly taking my post out of context. AND if you really knew how a business runs, you would know that the creative end doesn't necessarily get involved in the business end regarding things like how long a lease is, or how much they are spending on UPS. Jane doesn't make her prices, her business partner does. Jane doesn't negotiate her lease, her business partner does. You think Karl Lagerfeld or Marc Jacobs or Nanette Lepore know when their store leases expire? Seriously, you need to seriously get a grip. And if your so pissed about spending $1,000 then you probably should have done some competative online research on e-commerce shops taht sell Mayle, or gone to barneys and opened a barneys card and bought it all here on sale and saved an extra 10% or waited until she has her eventual sample sale.

Whatever, 7, I am not "so pissed" about spending $1k. I wrote a very even-keeled response to this post that said I wouldn't have spent that amount of money if I had known she wasn't closing. You took it upon yourself to one-up me and brag about spending $200k there.

I guess you think because you spent $200k at Mayle that you know everything about her and can not be wrong about this issue, but it is simply asinine to suggest that she did not know when her lease ended.

Obviously Jane Mayle does not negotiate her lease. I never said she did. But its expiration was the catalyst that made her decide to close her eponymous business of 10 years. How exactly can one decide to close a business based on a date without knowing what the date is?

I am not saying that she was being devious about staying open. It would be understandable if she had some extra fabric and they decided to extend the lease by a few months. But what you are suggesting makes no sense, and based on your reasoning skills I certainly understand why you are unemployed.

Guest #14, I never "one upped you" clearly your some slave fashion assistant. I have shopped at Mayle since it was Phare, so YES most likely I have spent $200K and I know alot about the brand. I know Jane and she's friends with many of my friends. I know the $100K number b/c I once called the store and asked due to sick curiosity.

As for being unemployed? I am unemployed b/c my husband is a major industry player and got am amazing job in a new city and I don't have to work. I spend my time doing charity work now and am on the board of the art museum in our city. Go toil at your 30K job. With that attitude I am sure you'll still have one in this economy.

Yes, you did one up me: "I am sorry that you spent $1000 on clothes this season. In the past 5 years I have spent over $100K at Mayle and I don't even know my 10 year total - I am sure its more like $200K." If that is not one-upping, I don't know what is.

I actually work in academia and do not consider being a cliche housewife who does charity work to be an accomplishment of any sort. But LOL that you just used your "unemployment" as a reason for being upset that Mayle is closing. That must be so hard for you to put all that clothing on your husband's credit card, sight unseen.

Maybe you would be better off posting at Dating A Banker Anonymous?

Yeah, I have to side with 16 here. The 100k on clothes housewife is the laughing stock of my life. Never in a million years would I want to be dependent upon my husband and just shop all day and do charity work to fill my worthless existence. Be ashamed at your frivolity, smart women (and men) of the world are laughing at you.

Everyone calm the eff down. You're all being petty and mean. Who cares if she spends this and you spend that? Does it really matter? Why are you looking down your noses at each other? I thought you both seemed cool and knowledgeable until the anger started pouring into this thread. Please stop judging each other. You both took each other's comments out of context.

ugh, 6 and 7 are acting like children. i can't even believe you both had the energy to exchange so many petty insults.

bottom line: we've all spent too much money on mayle (whatever "too much" means) and we will probably continue that trend now that she's staying open a couple more months!

Well, after all that, the collection has been posted and it is gorgeous. I don't live in NY any more so have to purchase sight unseen. I agree with "19", we have all spent too much on Mayle and will likely spend a lot more on the 10 little indians collection.
