No Peter Som Show at Fashion Week
By Faran Krentcil
More bad news for Fashion Week, if you can bare it:
Peter Som will not be showing his Fall 2009 collection, due to a breakup with his backer, Creative Design Studios.
Elana Posner, President and CEO of Peter Som Inc, says they’d already planned on reducing the size of the collection anyway, meaning the show wouldn’t have been anywhere near the 38 looks Som showed for Spring 09 anyway.
Buyers and members of the press can still (most likely) expect some kind of showroom presentation, which probably means that lookbook style photos will probably still make it online, so worry not if all you want is to see the clothes before it hits the stores.
Which makes us think: We – along with pretty much everybody who’s honest with themselves – have known for a long time that Fashion Week is, dare we say it?, unnecessary. Because if it really is about just seeing the clothes, you can actually see them best on Style.com, truth be told, especially if it’s the same kind of high-gear show that the big designers (Marc, DVF, Herve) usually throw. So after this Fashion Week is over, and so many designers pull out of the shows to find themselves totally unscathed sales-wise (and maybe even with a few extra dollars in their budget considering that even modest shows cost upwards of $15,000,) will they even want to return to the stress and grandeur of what is basically the most hyped-up trade show on earth?
Guess we’ll know by Spring 2010…

I absolutely adore the shows. I think it will be a sad shame if Fashion Week goes by the wayside. To me there is nothing like seeing the clothes in person, on the runway, with the music, models, makeup…
where would the fashion industry be without fashion week? it’s about much more than just showing the clothes; it’s about the glamour and grandeur of fashion, the networking, and the whole fantasy that surrounds each designer’s collections.
it would be a very sad day in fashion if there were no more shows.. :/
maybe if IMG didn’t charge so much to show in the tents, more designers could properly showcase their collections.
i don’t know whether you have ever worked in a design house, but fashion week is about a lot more than just seeing the clothes, and is definitely necessary. it is one of the only surefire ways that a designer gets press. additionally it helps enlarge celebrity clientele and pristege for the company. on top of ALL of that, it is one of the biggest and most important opportunities that small, new designers have to kickstart their line. send photos to PR and editors? maybe they’ll look. but they are far, far more likely to come to a show. it is completely uninformed of you to think that all designers come out unscathed after not showing – some do, and some do not. and the ones that are fine are fine after one missed show, but missing two or more seasons will really fuck you.
small note: if you can bear it
Fashion shows are a celebration of fashion.
Peter Som not showing is not the worst thing…. nothing to gain there, so why venture? IMG should take a nice long hard look at their pricing, because many can not/will not be able to pay the price of admission: some empty pup tents!
