Searle’s Bankrupt

Hi guys,

Sorry to be the bearer of more bad news but Searle, the fancy New York-based retailer and manufacturer, just filed for Chapter 11.

The owners are still trying to sell the company but things aren’t looking so good.

Who’s next? Scoop? Intermix? This is bad.

xo,

Saks, Macys, Filenes, it doesn't matter. No one shops department stores anymore. I anticipate a return to boutiques all over America, with shopping malls turning into low cost housing, government subsidized.

And who has ever even heard of Searle before?

Searle sucked big time so it isn't a big loss. I never found anything I really liked in that store.

It's really too bad - their own line of clothes and quality and wearable for office and day to night. I guess that's what happens when you open like six stores in a one mile radius on the UES. If they hadn't tried to go so big, they would probably still be doing well. Those Madison and 3rd Ave rents can't be cheap.

I've never shopped there (don't think there's any in the Boston area). But I guess What Not to Wear will have to find another store to use. They seem to go there often.

That is sad for Searle, but I don't think NY gals will be to upset..Scoop is showing signs of trouble, closing stores etc, but Intermix is looking better than ever.

The Intermix in Dallas has downsized quite recently. It's pretty much always empty.

Searle won't be going anywhere, chapter 11 is a repreive of debt, no going out of business. There coats are all over the country and the women here love them.

As a former manager at Searle, the news doesn't come as a surprise!! The owners are stubborn, frugal, and vicious ruthless people. They will somehow pull through.
# 7 , you are so right!! It was so so annoying having to compete with the Searle store literally about 3 blocks away. The stores are too close too each other. INSANE INSANE!!

I think Intermix isn't doing that well financially. But there are lots of markdowns in the stores outside NY. Speaking of markdowns, 20% off sale items at net a porter.

What are the key driving points in shopping one place over another? For instance, I like Intermix because the merchandise is unique. Is that why they are doing so well?

Chapter 11 means that you have relief from your debt and your leases. you are still in business, it only means re-organization.
everyone is struggling - imagine saks gave everything out for nothing - not good.

also, intermix isn't doing well at all, they cut so many jobs in december , plus cut all salaries!!! they also, layed off the buyers.
no one is doing well. who will be next?
i think searle will pull through - it would be a big loss - those coats are amazing!!!!

Number 8, you'll be happy to know that What Not To Wear, which is currently on production hiatus, plans to shoot again in our stores. Plus, Stacey London's stylist just pulled from our stores, this past weekend, for a commercial Stacy is doing. For our numerous fans, I assure you we will be around for you for a long time. Visit our website, it's growing very quickly. Plus, I assure you, we will maintain a substantial retail presence in Manhattan.
