Fashion Is Fun

The Oscars Are Here! The Oscars Are Here!

what they should wear to the oscars.jpgWe learned a lot of valuable lessons from Rachel Zoe’s reality show.

The wise one explained that while she’d love to throw her girls onto red carpets in fashion forward runway looks, the public doesn’t always get fashion forward. And so she’s forced to put aside her own taste in lieu of more traditional garb. As in, if she veers too far from strapless/sparkly/long De La Renta, US Weekly will have a field day with her poor unsuspecting clients.

It’s with that rule in mind that we’ve chosen what we hope three of the nominees will wear and what we think they’ll actually wear.

To begin, we’d die if Kate Winslet wore this Vivienne Westwood. It’s her night, she has to win and this is the dress one wears while winning. Plus, we’re still not sure exactly why Britain got so pissed over her Golden Globes speech but this would be a nice nod to her homeland.

Amy Adams, please eschew chiffon and jewel tones for a night - you’re hot and you can rock this black lace. If you’re scared or intimidated, the Oscar De La Renta label is there to comfort you.

Anne Hathaway! Congrats on the nomination. You’re hot, too. And young, so very young, too young to wear so much Valentino and the frumpy Chanel couture of late so why not go nuts and wear this super sexy Proenza cut-out gown? Seriously, Ryan Seacrest won’t know what to do with himself.

But what do we think they’ll actually wear? What do they have to wear to land Best Dressed? Click on my friends.

Kate will don Marchesa - we like this one in particular. She’s nominated for The Reader, a Weinstein company film. Harvey will want her to wear one of his wife’s designs and the Oscars are neither the time nor place to piss off Hollywood’s most famous tyrant.

This Zac Posen dress is signature Amy Adams. We’d suggest a dye job - forest green perhaps and some major gold earrings.

And you might think we’re nuts but this John Galliano would look dreamy on Anne Hathaway. We love the color, it’s conservative, which she’s into, and it’s long, which seems to be an Oscar requirement.

Your thoughts?

I doubt Kate will wear Marchesa. Harvey was notoriously difficult (as always) during the post-production. She'll wear anything but.

Someone will be wearing Jason Wu. After Michelle Obama's inauguration dress, which was kind of bridal, I have a feeling someone like Viola Davis might choose him.

Hathaway will probably stick to the classics like Oscar de la Renta. She never dresses down.

I've love to see Meryl is Lacroix or something equally theatrical. This is her a record fifteenth nomination.

Amy Adams will shock as by wearing Versace and look very J. Lo.

The Oscars- a sea of nude, beige, off-white, pale gold, pinkish, and lots of black. The least imaginative of these will land 'Best Dressed', along with one or two token "color" dresses, whatever is vintage (someone always shows up in vintage this or that), and one dress that no one's sure about because it's, like, acid yellow or something. Likewise, anyone in red will be "best dressed", as will anyone with a massive bow somewhere on their person.

That Marchesa is beautiful, and actually looks very Anne Hathaway. I wish someone would wear that Vivienne Westwood, though. And Amy Adams would be totally hot in the black lace.

What about Penelope Cruz? I think she usually looks really stunning.

P.S. I still haven't gotten over Marion Cotillard in the JPG last year. If I went to the Oscars, that's what I would wear. Or maybe that Galliano?

I remember for the Oscars in 2002, a few months after 9/11, a lot of the people on the red carpet opted for subdued colors/black, to reflect the somberness of the times.
Maybe we'll see that kind of reactionary way of dressing again this year but I kind of hope not.

As much as I wish Kate would wear that Marchesa dress up there, I understand that it's quite unlikely that she will. That dress is particularly stunning. I love it.

I agree with #17.I would love to see Kate in that dress but like our teacher Zoe taught us I doubt the public will get it.
But the Oscar dress would look great on Anne or Amy Adams.More so on Anne I think.

Am I mistaken or did anyone else notice that the Proenza monstrosity is not a dress but instead has harem pant legs? Oh dear lord.
I do LOVE the vivienne westwood and the Oscar dress though...both would be stunning.

But the Vivienne Westwood will look like a mess, not a good Oscar choice.

The Proenza Schouler defently isn't a dress. It's a harem pant jump suit thing.

Ugh whats the point in even hoping that celebs will wear anything other than jewel-tone versace etc etc. GOD it would be so awesome if someone wore dior or lacroix couture, or even better prada or balenciaga (from the actual runway, mind you). But any celebrity that doesn't look pretty and posh will get crucified by the fashion police. Even Maggie Gyllenhall's Lanvin number at the Globes, which was so much less daring than her usual style, got bad reviews.

OH MY GOD I LOVE that Vivienne Westwood! But alas, you are all correct in your assessment that the wearer would be crucified by a conformity-obsessed mainstream media. How sad. Especially considering that the biggest lament against stars of today is that they have no individuality...doubly sad.
