People Are Talking

Valley of Wu Dolls

jason wu and amanda lepore.jpgSo everyone’s talking about Jason Wu.

The lucky kid’s dress landed on Michelle Obama for last night’s host of inaugural balls. As of last night we knew he was young, Teen Vogue-beloved, only three seasons deep, and in the running for an inaugural coup.

This morning, we found out that he, like many a young fashion thing, has a day job. For the past nine years, since the age of seventeen, he’s been the creative director of Integrity Toys, a luxury doll company that makes over-priced dolls donning runway inspired duds.

It kind of makes sense though. We think Michelle’s dress was more suited to a doll than a first lady.

i thought she looked great. Very classic. I feel like you wouldnt be hating on the dress so much if it were Alexander Wang.

Why so bitter, Fashionista?

It's such a drag to read tasteless and biased remarks...

I thought she looked great too. Ease up a little. She is so streamlined all the time and it works. . . but I liked that she went with something a little different for the balls. The Obamas ARE different from every other first family. . . props to her for not dragging out some expected Oscar De La Renta creation.

oh come on, that dress was totally underwhelming, and most people thought so. fashionista isn't "bitter" or "biased" because they don't like ONE dress. see the comments from the slideshow of the wu gown for more people that also think the dress could have been a lot better.

I thought she looked amazing and that the dress suited her. Maybe I don't run with the fashionable circle that #7 does, but everyone I know was enchanted by the First Lady. Seriously, when I bring up that dress, people get all dreamy-eyed.

The dress was appropriate, I just didn't LOVE the color. In one picture her and President O looked like a newly wed couple. But props to her for not chosing an overused designer.

shouldn't a proper journalist (ie: even a blogger) cite source...linking "dolls" is a little lame, give the man, even if it's perez, some credit. we all know you guys steal copy & photos from all over the place. PS. the kid is 26, he's older than wang, give him some respect.

i didn't think the comment was bitter or biased but rather weird. i guess it would look good on a doll but it looked good on the first lady as well. she wore it well, it fit the occasion, and it looked good. weren't those the main points she needed to cover? seems she did

wow we're really down to criticizing which words are highlighted for links? there are either a lot of nitpicky editors on this site or wannabes with way too much time on their hands, though i'm going with the second since nobody seems to really read (ie where in there is wang even mentioned?)

It's just so refreshing to have a first lady that is not always wearing a Bill Blass suit or Oscar de la Renta dress. Both great labels but it's just nice to see a first lady in something fresh and new.

First ladys are SUPPOSE to wear Oscar in my opinion... I just dont see them as being that important to the fashion world and I dont think that they should be. The dress did look silly though.

*What guest #1 said. For sure*

on a side note, and not that anyone might care but, that Alexander Wang kid gets on my nerves.

Yeah, not to get off track but #15 is right.

He's just another IT designer that could put feces on a model and girls would wear it. Seriously, his best show was his junior show and that's more than likely because of Erin Wasson helping him (I actually loved that show).

The Wang craze will fade...

...I hope.

I have to say I don't understand the American craze with Alexander Wang. He's good but not AMAZING and with all the hype around him, I always find his shows underwhelming. On Mishcelle's dress, I'm like c'est comme ci comme ca. I like that she takes it beyond, but I think it coyld've been more amazing. Then again, she probably didn't want to go too crazy coz the American public may not have got it.

Honestly....most first lady dresses for the ball are gaudy as hell. The dress was a little cotillion for me, but I still think she managed to look better than most other first ladies of years past. And, I disagree with the idea that first ladies should only wear Oscar de la Blah blah blah. Despite my problems with the dress, I would rather her give new designers a shot of publicity to the arm. Sometimes I really like what Michelle Obama wears, sometimes I really dislike what she wears. But, I think she herself is beautiful, and at least she surprises me...

I think the dress fit her well and was really appropriate for that particular occasion.perhaps the colour deducted some points but overall Wu did a great job!
both Wu and Wang are Taiwanese,I'm proud because so am I ha...I think Wang is lucky because the fashionistas lately are all into grungy looks...Wu is sort of a more traditional designer,he's great at gowns...I personally like both...but I barely have any gown wearing events...so Wang is probably more on my list ha!

I thought that Jason Wu's design was fresh and well suited for the new first lady.
She is a fresh new face with innovative ideas and her choice of fashion and frugal sensibility as far as her choice reflects a smart, savvy and elegant woman.

Why do people have to be so negative and full of so many critiques? Have you passed that perfect mirror that says, "you're the fairest of them all"?
