Where Does the Lace Go?

prada ruffle pump purple.jpgFaran and I spent a luxurious day at Barneys pre-Christmas.

We reveled in $300 Miu Miu, $150 Christian Louboutin and I walked away with three little black dresses - Alexander Wang, Marc, Phillip Lim - for less than the original price of one.

Most of our time was devoted to shoes.

I slipped on ruffled Prada pumps, sequined Miu Mius, cap-toed Chanels and t-strapped Balenciagas, all signature AW08 shoes, and wondered what one does with such distinct pieces post-season.

I couldn’t take them home. They’re still too expensive (season-specific things tend to be). But for those who do shell out $4000 on the Prada lace skirt or $5000 for that Alexander McQueen military jacket, what do you do with them?

Do you wear the piece every single day until it’s ripped to shreds and then relegate it to the back of the closet? Do you treat it like the rest of your wardrobe, occasionally broken out and always met with sqeals of, “OMG! Fall 08!”? Do you wear it once and then stash it away for twenty years so that when you do wear it your friends fall at your feet with envy and ask which amazing vintage store you’re hiding from them?

Or do I only think about this because I covet it all for a month before moving on to the next impossibly gorgeous, unattainable piece of runway history without actually seeing any of it in my closet?

If I pay good money for something, recently some Marni heels, I live in the item for a couple of weeks until the newness wears off of it (I guess I'm a bit of a hillbilly). After that it becomes a regular part of the closet but something I always smile about when I pull it out for a night on the town.

I thought I saw Faran (seen pictures of her) in Barneys shoe dept! It's good that you didn't buy any shoes there- once you take the plunge, it's very hard to go back.

Do "fashionistas" really pay that much attention to what season an item is from? Like, if it's from last season, it's OMG old?

chances are that if i spend a lot of money on something, i am going to wear it, seasons be damned. i mean, if i like it enough to spend several hundred dollars on it, i like it enough to wear it regularly.i dont think it matters whether the item is in season or not- a true fashionista can always make it look stylish and current.

i look at the seasons best pieces as investments, pick my favorites and wait till they are deeply deeply marked down. Then I run around my house for days in my last purchases. If they are well made, which most are, they will stay as treasured pieces in my wardrobe for years to come .

i purchased one of the miu miu dresses and the harlequin patch heels from ss08 at the sample sale (which were still pricey for my very small salary) which i looove to pieces but i now totally think everyone is like "oooh...i remember that dress" it's just SO obviously from that collection and i feel a bit wierd about it?! am i a freak? does anyone really care? I work in fashion so it's mainly when i see fellow magazine ppl out and about and i think they must be like "that's sooo 2 seasons ago"

if i buy something pricey (nothing for 4,000 though!), i just stare at it. satin marni heels, suede prada heels, missoni knit cardigan, rick owens wool jacket: all highly likely to be damaged, spilt on, rained upon, nicked, snagged, or ripped. no thank you, heart attack at age 22. so i wear it maybe once, relish the moment i step into my closet and open the box, and go to sleep easily at night knowing my precious loot is still in perfect form. (i do get up several times to check that i've locked my doors).

Wow, I feel so bad for you #9
Ideally something like a Rick Owens wool jacket is constructed well and should stand the test of time AKA being worn.
And if you're actually just a slob, well then, garbage bags come cheap.

If I make a big investment, I usually try to buy something that will resist trends. However if something is very "of the moment" (damn you Fendi Spy Bag!) I'll wear the hell out of it until the moment is over. Then its off to retirement, only to be broken out around those I know wont care/dont know.
