Fall 2009 New York

Coco, Consider Yourself Warned

coco at rag & bone aw09.jpgI’m sitting in the tents blogging from this impossibly small Sony computer that I think they sent me to be nice but is going to result in my going blind.

While I’m trying to connect to the internet, I meet a guy who says he’s a photographer though he’s suspiciously without a camera and this happens:

“Does Chanel ever have a fashion show,” he asks?

“Yes,” I answer.

“Well when? I’ve been sitting here all day and I’m just so confused.”

“Um. Well. They show in Paris, in a couple of weeks.”

“Well maybe you can try and help me out. I’m looking for this one model and I’m having trouble finding her. Her name’s Coco. Like Chanel. She’s perfect and has this fiery red hair and I really need to find her but they tell me she hasn’t walked anything in the tents so far.”

So I’m totally creeped out. And because I too love Coco Rocha, in a not-stalker-but-I-love-all-models kind of way, my response comes out something like, “Oh yeah, um, I don’t think she made it to New York this season,” even though I saw her at Rag & Bone last night.

Add that to the list of things making this Fashion Week like no other: Super small photo pits, weirdly empty front rows, Budweiser where champagne used to be, and major creepers making their way past Bryant Park security.

Creepy...? But, I have seen a lot of old men commenting fake Coco Rocha profiles on MySpace. So it doesn't surprise me.

Good job on telling him you haven't seen her, though I doubt that will deter him. Security sucks there. When I one of the project runway show a few years back, a bunch of tourist with M&M World bags leaned over and said "ohhhhh this is so exciting! How did you get in?" I was like I work at a magazine--I really do work at a magazine.

what happened to Democracy? Everybody and her unqualified PR person have infiltrated the tents, why not a few unusuals who actually have a passion for the sport. That doesn't mean I condone dangerous stalkers, but who's to say what the motivation is. Most of the filler peopling the seats are over aged babies on a very expensive play date.Maybe he meant Chanel Iman????? What's old? any guy over 32?And Bud doesn't give you the headache cheap champagne does...As for Bryant Park security lets anyone through, that's how most people get in!

speaking of models... on another note, i'm surprised you guys haven't mentioned anything of the new upcoming (and exploding) model liu wen. she's already walked atleast three of the shows in on friday, and almost EVERY major show for spring, including a lot of the major designer houses. not to mention, she is so gorgeous! more diversity please!

maybe the fashionista girls don't choose which models to write about based on race, but on relevance?

i agree with guest #5. designers usually only have around 2 spots for africans, and maybe 1 or 2 spots for asians (unless the designer is asian like phillip lim or jason wu, then the amount of diverse models is higher), so it is pretty monumental that liu wen was able to nag almost every fashion show this past spring season. (i think one of the few other asian models able to do so was du juan few years back.) also, she was chosen as one of the faces for the alexander mcqueen for target line, which is huge considering that it's such a mainstream venue. i love fashionista and i read it almost everyday, but i think this site could really benefit if it included more diverse models, those who can represent america as a whole.

number 10 is right! RELEVANCE. So sure, liu wen is having some successes, that does not make her a Coco.

But then maybe if blogs like Fashionista commented on more diverse models they would become more "relevant" no?
