First Look: Topshop Unique
By Britt Aboutaleb Saturday, Feb 21, 2009 / 8:01 PMLike any good American girl, I’m obsessed with Topshop.
And like any good fashion obsessed girl, I love Katie Grand.
But I have to admit, the Katie Grand styled Topshop Unique show was kind of a mess.
The clothes were very new rave, neon and kind of grungy. Liu Wen, Karlie (walking her first London Fashion Week), Jourdan & co. stomped down the runway in hooded anoraks and massive, blanket-like scarves. There were Balmain-shouldered sweatshirts paired with patchwork leather skirts, ill-fitting tube dresses and a hooded multi-colored sequined jumpsuit to top it all off.
Meanwhile, the accessories rocked, especially the glow stick necklaces and clutches.
Before the show, Hanne Gaby Odiele complained about her fat legs.
During the show, I sat right behind Daisy Lowe, Pixie Geldof and Lydia Hearst (from here on out referred to as the Brit It-Girls). I’d stuffed my face half full of delicious Topshop meringues before someone was kind enough to point out that I’d be in every single paparazzi picture this side of the Atlantic.
Whatever, the meringue was delicious. Wish the clothes were, too.

Gotta agree with you Britt. These outfits are hideous!
You want goodies? Shop UNIQLO. TopShop is a PR machine for wannabe designers who are really models approaching midlife. I can’t stand to see common sportswear trotted down a runway as though it were fashion. Hype not worth the hype.

Lydia Hearst isn’t British!!
I know! But “Brit-it Girls Plus One Random American” is a bitch to type over and over :) Think of it as more like the British Fashion Week It-Girls.
Lol point taken!
I just saw the VW red label pics on style.com…and those “brit-it-girls” totally ruined the whole runway…what on earth was VW thinking?go to style.com and click on pic #46,see how Alice Dellal looks like a man stomping that runway and Daisy Lowe(#47) looking like a fatass widow…gosh…they make me sick!
If fashionista sites one more collection as Balmain inspired I’m going to stop reading.
Cites, the word you are looking for is cites.
hey 7 you should probably take that up with all the designers ripping off decarnin’s distinctive silhouettes
Totally disapointed with topshops collection it was very confusing and what was with the models hair? Although i have to say i liked the oversized cardigans (glad to see they are here to stay, saw normal length fitted cardigans in Topshop yesterday and nearly had a fit).
agreed! I liked some of the knits and ideas but it was too literal and (I know this sounds so pretentious but…) isn’t nu rave already dead? Everyone (incl. blogs and magazines) properly buried nu rave around early fall. I mean, everyone still loves neon here and there are an awesome missbehave-esque ensemble any day but it was all just too much and too little too late.
Also, brit it-girls = Br-it girls, have it.
also, in response to the “Balmain-inspired” sentiments, I don’t think it’s solely that everyone is ripping of Balmain (even though I’m sure this is most certainly true in some cases because it was so effing AWESOME) but if anyone hadn’t noticed (rhetorical statement/question/whatever), everything is Ziggy Stardust/post-apocalyptic mid 80s coke-binge nightclub/-insert your own analogy here- so far this season, citing “Balmain” as a reference is probably going to get your point across in the quickest possible way.
LOL at guest 12.Just about sums it up.
