First Look: Jason Wu Post Obama

Jason Wu Fall 09 13.jpgThe Jason Wu show at Exit Art this afternoon was, how should we put it?, insane.

Last season, there was enough room for a pick up game of Frisbee, should anyone have been so inclined. This time, it was one of those shows so super packed that the standing section had a better view than half the seats.

Accordingly, I snagged a spot standing over Mickey & Lynn (Lynn was stunned that the show was for Fall and wore a Rugrats themed scarf printed with images of Tommy, and Mickey couldn’t remember his sex joke). The show didn’t start until a good fifteen minutes after Anna’s arrival, and a very long time after Robert Verdi and one of the ANTM judges (graciously) took their spots in the standing section, too.

The show finally started after Julie Gilhart arrived, and it was filled with very pretty clothes meant more for photographing than anything else.

We’re sure Michelle will have much to pick from for the coming year.

Totally agree with the season inappropriateness. I'm really not happy with the collection. I think he's watering himself down for the mainstream.

"We expected the Jason Wu show to have Marc Jacobs's levels of crowdedness. But the atmosphere at Exit Art was relaxed and the standing section mostly empty and pleasantly roomy."

Is that DVF's head of hair in the bottom left corner of picture 2?

It's a little bit Oscar, but not as severe and uptight. The collection was very pretty and pic 18 is stunning.

I'm not sure the whole Michelle Obama wave of publicity will be a good one in the long term for Wu. Think about it like this--Oscar de la Renta has gained in status because Laura Bush and Hillary Clinton wore his stuff, but he was definitely well known before that. Jason Wu....well-known by fashion people but not really outside of NY.

Won't it just be gimmicky, and he'll be forever known as "the Michelle Obama designer?" Where does he go from here?? When people get tired and stop wanting a piece of her (not in the dirty sense), will the clothing sell? Look at James Galanos...famous ONLY because a first lady wore his stuff...it's actually a very hard position Wu is in, in my opinion.

I think he's very talented and his clothes were probably never meant to be for normal people like us,those gowns are really exquisite, although I don't have the money or chance to wear any of them...but still congratulate Wu on his success, whether if it's just 15 min. of fame...speaking of which,I think Wang's time should be up soon.........?

i think the clock is ticking. Nice enough collection, but judging from the front row( BGoodman, Saks, Barneys, etc they didn't look exactly stricken with wonder or surprise. They were like always....bored and jaded.
