Gisele Cuts Her Own Hair (Do You?)

gisele with shorter hair in dior ad.jpgOk, not really. But Plum Sykes’ article on shoulder-length hair in the new March Vogue does explain how Gisele ended up chopping off her Gisele Hair, copied by thousands of magazine-gripping women everywhere: Apparently, she spaced, cut her super long hair to her shoulders, then freaked out and called her hairdresser at John Frieda in shock (we’re sure he helped shape it up later).

The thing I find most funny is that I’ve been cutting (ok, trimming) my own hair for years. I haven’t seen the inside of a professional salon in about a decade (I just put my hair in the most even braid possible every few weeks, then chop off about an inch), which has worked out quite nicely for my shoe budget.

I’ve always thought that unless you’re doing an all out Audrey Hepburn-inspired cut-a-thon, you can probably get away with most styles on your own - most girls I see just have long hair with a few shorter pieces in the front anyway.

Do you cut your own hair at home? Or does that just sound like a bad Full House waiting to happen?

I used to always cut my own hair, often going for more daring dos and I usually loved the results. I did choppy bowl cuts and weird bangs, things some people might feel stupid leaving their homes with.
Well, my boyfriend turned out to be one of those people, so we've compromised: I get edgy haircuts but done by a professional at a salon and he pays.

In jr high I let one of my friends cut my hair, as in making a mjor style change alah the famed Rachel friends shag...lets just say it was terrible. Thankfully my hair dresser was able to clean it up! Lesson learned.

I cut my bangs and groom the layers myself.

I have short, curly hair, so if I cut it myself it could go horribly, terribly wrong. I tried cutting my own bangs once. Yikes, that was a mistake.

I've done the cutting my own hair thing for many years, altho now I'm totally into the stylized layered hair that good salons (MArk Garrison, Sahag, et al.) do so well.

I do cut my BF's hair exclusively though - he does not entrust it to anyone else. Haha

Ha! I dearly wish I could cut my own hair, and I've tried, but it's very very curly (long curly) and I always end up uneven unless I take a loooooooooonnnnngggg time in front of a mirror making tiny tiny snips to it after it's dry. Then again, I have yet to find a hairdresser who can cut it evenly either - so maybe it's just my fate to have uneven flyaway curls forever!

I recently got a pixie do (which I went to a professional to chop off my foot of hair), but I maintain it on my own.

All you really need is a good pair of scissors, steady hands, a few mirrors placed at strategic angles (and maybe a razor for layers).

It's actually kind of fun.

Salon is kind of therpautic though.. a moment to relax (that said, last time I went idiots had my neck at a bad angle for washing, so I had neck pains and stabbing headaches for a week or so afterwards).

I have long curly hair and cut it myself. Because it's curly it's less noticeable if it's not super even. I just tie it up and chop of the ends. Which is great because I hate going to a salon to get it cut and now I haven't been to one in a few years.

I have been cutting my own bangs for ages and keep the ends even, but whenever I need any kind of cut it's off to the salon. I wouldn't trust myself cutting any more than the aforementioned amount, my hand just isn't steady enough!

I've been cutting my own hair for almost 20 years. It is currently short, with short bangs and longer sides. I just never found anyone who could listen to what I wanted and actually cut it that way. It takes forever and I have to use two mirrors, but I love the results. Most people don't believe me when I tell them I do it myself.

I actually cut my own hair more when it was short. I have longer hair than I've ever had in my life now, and I'm really scared of trimming it myself - I guess because I don't want to mess up and then have to cut off even more. When I had short hair, I cut it all the time. You need frequent cuts to keep short hair looking good, and it gets expensive to have it done professionally.

I know my stylist well, and she has to eat. So, if i have to drop 150 dollars every 8-10(..sometimes 12. even though it should be 6) weeks, so be it.

I consider cutting my own hair sometimes. It is very long, and very thick, so mistakes could be hidden easily. But i she know would notice and yell at me. I think about box color sometimes too...

Absolutely cut my own hair. It's pretty long and after awhile it just felt like a waste to pay a salon for a trim a few times a year when it just took them 15 minutes to do it. 2 mirrors and a sharp pair of hair-cutting scissors + hair clips are all you need. It's long enough to pull the back parts over my shoulder to the front to trim. The shorter, face-framing pieces are the only more-complicated part (i.e. something that could be noticeable if messed up) and they are already in the front so it's really easy to do. I have thick hair so it's hard to tell if it's a little uneven at the ends.

Hell yes. I can't be arsed to go in to get my bangs trimmed every few weeks. I do have my wonderwoman stylist/bff take up my layers when I need it though.

Eventhough hair is a huge deal for me, I do trim my own hair. But I'm finding the better I take care of my hair, the less I have to trim/cut it as often.

I get my hair seriously cut/style changed about 2-3 times a year in the salon, and the rest of the time I do upkeep myself. right now it's a little longer than shoulder length, and I just grab it into a bunch, pull it over one shoulder and snip vertically, and then pull it over the other shoulder and do the same. It keeps the layers intact and saves a bundle!

I haven't had a haircut for over a year now and I just booked an appointment for one. I should definitely get hair scissors and see if I can do the trimming myself.

What are your tips for beginner cutters? =P

I have long, thick hair and I always get my hair cut @ beauty schools to save money. I've had some pretty wild cut/color jobs, but now I have straight across blunt bangs. They grow like nuts and there is no way I'm going in to get them trimmed every 2 weeks so I just get a pair of scissors and vertically snip snip away. It's great!

Bangs are super easy to maintain, just divide them in 3 sections, twist each section and snip off the end and voila, perfect fringe. I cut my own hair, since it is long and not very complicated, unless I have somewhere to go, like a wedding or a dress-up event, then I let the professionals do their magic.

I wish I could cut my own hair, but I can't even draw a straight line, let alone hold the scissors straight. It's getting really long, though, so I only go in once or twice a year and get 1-2 inches cut and I'm done.

i never get my hair cut in a salon unless I'm getting something dramatic. Right now I have bangs and they grow like crazy! I have to trim them myself every 2 weeks or so. Sometimes they DO come out uneven, but then I just pin them back with bobby pins for a few days to let them grow out a bit and try again!

I get my hair cut in a salon every 3-4 months, but cut my own bangs maybe twice during that period. My hair is thin and fine, and I feel that I really need that professional cut to give it more volume.

That said, I cut my own hair once in high school and got a million compliments on it.

I cut my own bangs. Sometimes I do a great job, sometimes not so great. The rest of my hair is long thick naturally straight hair with layers. I don't touch those. But I do go 2 to 3 months without a haircut, unless I have a big event coming up like a wedding or Christmas. In college my best friend would cut my hair. More often than not it was uneven. But, I didn't care.

i've been cutting my own hair for about 4 years now. with my curly hair, when ever i would ask for specific hair cuts the hairdresser would object and suggest something else. and that something else would always end up looking like crap. So i just decided i would stop waisting my time and money getting crap for haircuts.
For not having any type of experince cutting hair it always ends up looking good. I actually get complements all the time.
I've only regreted it once, I had cut a couple layers too short. but it wasn't that bad, I just used differnt hair accesories to disguse the bad cut. and luckly my hair grows fast.

I had the worst experience with a stylist a while back. After that I found a gal who fixed it all and she has my sworn loyality! There's definitely something about allowing yourself to be pampered for a few hours. I just get styles that last 6-8 weeks which cuts down on the bill...and the buyers remorse!!
