urban rips off hayden harnett.jpgHayden-Harnett made a Camille clutch for spring.
Its shoe counterpart is the sandal on the far left, the shoes that Natalie’s revolved her weekend around and probably one of the most unique sandals we’ve seen in a long time. The orange and blue and grey leather links top a gray suede platform – there are even little studs in the back, because if you’re going to commend Toni Hacker on one thing, it’ll be for her attention to detail.
Anyway, Urban Outfitters has a Camilla shoe. It’s on the right and has orange and white and brown leather fabric atop a faux wood wedge fastened with elastic and sells for $128.
The colors might not be as pretty but they’ve got the idea – someone else’s idea – down pat.

I mean, I kind of think the originals look like a (vague) copy of the Balenciaga gladiators from a few seasons ago, with the different colored “links.”

the hayden’s are definitely not a copy of anything. i think it’s wrong that urban outfitters copy so many designers so blatantly. shame on them. bad karma.

the urban version looks cheap and i don’t like the colors. i wouldn’t wear them.

They both owe quite a lot to the Balenciaga sandals from last summer quite apparently. I have a feeling that they both just copied Balenciaga instead of Urban copying H/H.

Really? The details are nearly identical from the Urban to the H-H style, and I don’t think these are super like the Balenciaga sandals you’re talking about.

What’s up with the Balenciaga comments? The Balenciaga sandals don’t look anything like these except they use leather links. Balenciaga wasn’t the first to use leather links on sandals.

The HH sandals look NOTHING like the Balenciaga. They are completely different styles.

Watch out for Urban Inc. ( who owns both Urban Outfitters and Athropologie) as they have over 25+ in-house labels and do their best to copy current/trendy finds!

What Urban Outfitters, Forever 21, etc. do is great. They take designs with inflated prices, copy them, and make them available to you and me.
Additionally, this has nothing to do with copyright. Copyright law does not apply clothing designs.

Though it hasn’t been updated in a while, check out this website to see how Urban Outfitters has screwed over so many designers (wellknown and independent alike) by mass producing blatant copies of their work without any payment/

i agree with you number 9.
the rest are snobbish, juniors who forget we have a bad economy.

Oh come on, you guys! It’s not ever ok to copy somebody’s work, No matter the size of the price tag on it!
Maybe if we lived by a different, more sustainable mentality, this would be less of a problem! I’m by no means rich (23 yr old, making minumum wage, working part time), but really believe in INVESTING my money in clothing! Do you know that many of these stores ( I worked at Urban for years, I know this for a fact) make clothing with poor quality ON PURPOSE!!? It’s called “disposable” fashion for a reason. So instead of taking a few $45 trips to forever21 a month, save that money, buy yourself a beautiful dress (yes, there are quality designers for under $200) that will last you years and years and years. Heck, the hemming might even stay in tack through the wash! :)
All I’m saying, is the mentality of things being “overpriced” because they are under $100 could be thrown out the window if you didnt have to purchase new clothing all the time because your $12.80 dress just came apart at the seams. Or, you know, buy vintage!
*end rant*

while i don’t really like it when store make nearly identical copies of designer items (like the sandals above) I don’t necessarily think you should be bashing stores like Urban Outfitters for offering affordable fashion for people that cannot afford designer. Obviously spending $50 a month on clothes from places like Forever 21 is probably not as smart as spending more money and shopping less on higher quality and better designed items.
However, some people only shop rarely (ex. I only really shop twice a year and now that I have enough properly fitting clothes to last a week to a week and a half before i do laundry I hardly shop at all)and buy only a couple items on these shopping trips and despite the careful planning and saving cannot afford more than Urban Outfitters. Additionally, I only just moved to a country that has vintage stores this year..and the only one in biking distance to me (I can’t afford a car) is a goodwill that only has clothes size 14 on up (I’m a 4) so its kind of off limits). It’s just a little snobbby to suggest that everyone can afford to invest their money in expensive clothing, and that not doing so is due to poor choices and a lack of knowledge.
Also, all my clothing is from ‘lower’ prices stores (anywhere from Marshalls and Target to on sale Urban and Zara) and I have never had a problem with quality. I wash and dry my clothes in regular washing machines and they manage to still fit properly and hold all their seams together through regular wear.

um…ok I realize now that my comment was probably unnecessarily long and that my situation probably doesn’t apply to the majority of people who frequent this site. I hope I didn’t offend anyone (especially not guest at 9:50pm) with what I said, I just got a little frustrated because of all the people (not just on this website or on this post) that are always saying that cheap clothes are evil and assuming that everyone has access to vintage stores and is capable of putting aside money for investment pieces instead of food or university tuition.
Also, in some ways I do completely agree with your point (guest at 9:50pm) and now that I have enough clothes to keep me from wandering around naked (I’m 19, and up until 2 or 3 years ago I was still growing and needed to buy new stuff each school year) I plan to stop buying clothes almost entirely and put aside any spare money so that someday I can buy something a little nicer.
Ok, now I’m done and I promise I’ll quit with the excessively lengthy posts and leave this alone, especially since its too late for me to be making any sort of sense. Sorry for the rant

im not really feeling the urban shoe! but i love the HH!! its real annoying when stores make identical shoes, but in differnet colors or what not. Then they try to lure you to buy the shoes by making them cheaper!!!! well i guess its there jobs..but cant they come up with new ideas!?!?

the copying game is a fact of life. It’s the way the game is played. If you don’t like it don’t worry, just pay for the original. For the rest who can’t or won’t afford the original then fortunately they can still have the pleasure of owning the piece that gives them joy. Fashion is an industry that feeds on itself. It’s a pity that some companies make tons off of ideas which the originator made only a little….but that’s life. BOTH sandals are really not appealing to my eye….

Am I the only one thinking that the HH shoe is an absolute eysore? The colours give me a migraine.

#17, I’m in total agreement with you….They are butt ugly.
Fluff

I dig the Urban version … but a blatant copy? At $128? No thanks.

this is the first adventures in copyright that i’ve liked in a WHILE. the urban outfitters version looks so much cheaper and uglier and i don’t understand why anyone would buy them for $128. why not just save up a little and get the originals?

Sorry, but they’re both really ugly.

Its really funny to read comments written by people that don’t know anything about fashion or work in the industry.
Ok… if you were designers you would understand a few important points
The chain link upper on a huarache style sandal has been around since the 1960’s i.e. Hayden Harnett is not the inventor or “master mind” behind the style
because of the styles age it has become a design standard or basic like say… a penny loafer
If Hayden Harnett had the opportunity to sell her shoes to Urban Outfitters she would
