Feeling Minimal?

erin wasson in a tshirt and shorts.jpgLet’s count it up:

1. Erin Wasson just had garage sale of her clothes because she wanted to be free of all her stuff, and adopt a more “utilitarian” style.

2. Kenzo’s auctioning off a bunch of his art a la YSL and Versace because he wants to live “more free, lighter”.

3. The over-the-top feel of the 80’s runways have made everyone groan “ew” and mourn the days when sequins, shoulder pads and mini-skirts weren’t all on the same runway.

4. This was all preceded by the death of the It bag, over and over.

So does this mean everybody’s over the 80’s before the re-runs have even hit the racks, and are going back to the times of simple lines and uncomplicated pieces (also known as a big part of the 90’s) already?

Are you feeling like you’re over too much fuss in your fashion (and life)? Or are some people just selling their stuff for the cash, and not necessarily for the free closet space?

Fashion will always be a part of my life, and I feel that going "minimal" is a trend and a sign of the times.

Oh this is part of everything being faster i guess, or maybe 80's complex looks made some of them rush for 90's..i don't think any of them clears their closet for money, but they'll be the first ones to have used 'minimalism' when everybody will be fulled up with sequines and shoulder pads, longing for basics.

absolutely recession. the people (especially the rich!) that have been spending freely on ridiculous things are now receiving the mounting bills and are realizing that they are screwed.

i was in elementary school when the movie Reality Bites came out, and i never understood why those Gen Xers were so cranky...and simply dressed. Until now.

The age of excess is over (for this generation)! YES!!!

Recession. Defo.
I think it's absolutely a good thing.
It should always be in fashion to be thrify because everybody knows you can't buy style.
The op shopper in me is delighted.

Its amazing how much rich people are freaking over the recession, I haven't been hurt(yet) but I was never the girl who had everything either. I wonder if this recession is just a regional thing( ny or la)because in the South we aren't hurting that bad, but we never had much anyway...

A lot of it is about putting on appearances. Rightfully or not, the rich are under a lot of scrutiny these days, and the era of conspicuous consumption has been put on hold.

I heard an interview with someone at Gilt recently, and he said that the company is growing and doing amazingly well. I've personally seen 4 figure apparel and jewelry being sold out within 30 minutes of going on sale on that site. The rich people may no longer be spending 10k on a coat --but that's probably because they can now spend 2k on 5 of those same coats.

#8 ... you are probably very young, since I know many commentators are in high school, but don't be naive. people have lost 30-40% and beyond of their 401ks and their houses have plummeted in value. the recession is worse for the lower middle class, and very bad in the South, where the mortgage crisis has pushed vacancy rates skyward. if you are still shopping, good for you ...
