How Do You Spot a Banker?

gordon gecko makes a phone call to god.jpgFor those of you who only read WWD for the news, you might not know that Thursday’s the start of the G20 Summit in London, a yearly meeting between the world’s largest national economies to discuss an agenda that usually includes IMF reform and strategies to revive the global economy. Naturally, this attracts protestors of all kinds, which naturally makes the world’s bankers both in attendance and in the general vicinity a little nervous since most people blame them for the current global credit problems.

In anticipation, the British police have advised bankers to dress down so they’re not as easily recognized. But here’s what’s funny: They’ve also been told to avoid “chinos and loafers” since those too readily bellow “banker trying to dress like a normal person” - kind of like when you see an Olsen trying to blend in on Bleecker behind her neon Oliver Peoples and venti latte that’s bigger than her forearm, or when a kid plays hide-and-seek in the middle of the room.

So we’re wondering - Can you spot an off-duty banker? What gives them away? The untucked Thomas Pink shirt over dry-cleaned jeans and never-before-used Nikes? The super gelled Ross Geller hair, like they’ve been swimming against the tide all morning?

We don’t really know any bankers, so we’re curious - what exactly do they look like whilst they walk among us?

I think they're like the rest of us and all have their own style. I know some who wear polos or button ups with knakis and some who wear tshirts and jeans. Depends on who they are- the office is just a uniform.

I date one. The key characteristic are their ties. Can we say Hermes? They have all come to expect that out of one another. His friends often wear polos and chinos in their leisure but he wears jeans and tee-shirts and zip ups etc. A really clean shave can also be a good indicator (The art of shaving, anyone?)

i date one whose firm has an office in london by where the g20 summit is happening. apparently when he was there last week the people in the london office were saying they would dress up like the protestors and try to sneak into the building that way.

All the young finance types I know shop at: Steven Alan, Opening Ceremony, Rag and Bone, Seize Sur Vingt, Unis, thrift. Plenty of the young ones have great style.

As a friend who is a London banker said to me, the protesters are mostly students and won't be there before 11am, and they'll have all been at work for 5 or 6 hours.

I live in London, and have come to know a banker or two, and guest #3 - the Hermes tie is so spot on, it's sick. And the clean shave as well.

I don't think London bankers know how to be casual in their spare time (English is general are not about casual) and it's not so much about WHAT they wear in their spare time as much as HOW they are carrying it off.

If you see a guy looking intensely uncomfortable in perfectly pressed jeans and a sweater, staring yearningly at the man wearing the navy suit and silk tie next to him, wishing he was happily contained in a similar uniform, then he is likely a banker.

Oh yea, the ridiculously clean casual shoes are also a dead giveaway.

"The super gelled Ross Geller hair, like they’ve been swimming against the tide all morning?"

Noooo, you are confusing banker with guido. As if bankers lived on LI.

Guest 5 is right, the major shared trait is nice shoes. All the finance guys I know have nice shoes all the time. They would never wear sneakers except to the gym.

I'm a female working in finance. Typical wear for guys on casual days: 7 denim, brown worn down ferragamos, theory cashmere sweater, hair slicked back...and a burb raincoat.

watches for guys:
analyst level=movado
assoc level=cartier tank
vps=phillipe patek
mds=too rich to care-will probably wear a digital watch..since we all know that he can afford to buy anything with his money.

but true giveaway is that they carry two phones: blackberry for work emails, another cell for personal use. they consistently check their bb..out of habit.

lol... The only dead giveaway that my husband carries is his blackberry. Otherwise, no watch, no hair products, board shorts, surfer t-shirt, and a cardigan. No labels. Just surfer brands.

Wow #15! How do these guys learn this uniform? Did they all go to prep schools? Do their mothers and girlfriends influence this style?

I know nothing about this world and am very curious ;)

my husband is one and he has great style...so do most of his friends - suits during the week and on the weekends jeans or khakis with a polo or button down - maybe also a blazer when we go out. Most of the ones I know wear a rolex (and its patek phillipe #15 ;-)). We live in Long Island/NYC and he def doesn't do the slicked back hair - don't give Long Island a bad rap!!

I go to school with bankers, and you can actually tell from their personalities. It's not so much in the clothes. You can spot them even without the banker attire.

Any good banker won't have many off-duty hours. At all.

When they do, they're either:

1. Sleeping - so, underwear/pajamas
2. Partying - and they'll generally wear the same thing they wore to work, because they go straight afterwards

I don't know what kind of bankers you all hang out with who have time to shop at Theory, Opening Ceremony, etc. My boyfriend and his coworkers/friends generally find one style of button down they like (at Brooks Brothers, Thomas Pink, etc) and buy it in every single blue color they have.

The suit. Tailor flown in from Naples on a regular basis, Hermes tie, £4000 shoes.
Shirts also made by said tailor with initials embroidered on the cuffs and front.
Also, the scent. Not the smell of money per se, but suitably expensive cologne.

as a banker living in london who loves this blog, i had to comment. i think that this is really spot on. i think the males of our species (bankers that is)are even more conspicuous in cashmere jumpers, berlutti loafers and burberry trenches than they would have been in the saville row suit and tailor made, monogrammed, egyptian cotton shirts. i have to agree with whomever made post # 25 however that there is the feeling of a uniform, not the creativity and individuality that most readers of a blog like this would exhibit in their daily attire.

I'm fairly certain it has something to do with the words-per-minute they can type on their blackberry with one hand and blind-folded while hailing a cab down 5th.

I go to Penn and I definitely agree with #24. All the Wharton banker types can usually be spotted by the over-analyzed way they try to look casual and are constantly looking around them to make sure they are doing it right. But then again, maybe that's just the bakers-in-training.
