Liya Kebede Lands J.Crew All by Herself

liya kebede for tiffany.jpgEven though J.Crew’s had plenty of well-known models in their catalogs (Lauren Hutton, Cintia, Anouck, and Mallory from the Real World Paris, if you’re into fun facts, they’ve never signed just one face to front the print shopper from first page to last - until now.

Fashion Week Daily reports that Liya Kebede, Ethiopian mother of two and face of St. John for Spring 09, has been signed to model the April J.Crew catalog all by herself, which is sure to bring some fashion-centric attention to the brand that’s just come off so much press from Michelle Obama’s support of the office-wear staple.

But more pressing: Does this make the J.Crew catalog the new barometer of a model’s success?

This is ridiculous. They obviously just paid a lot for her to do it- J. Crew has no cache for a model, but models have to do catalogue jobs to earn a living along with major campaigns.

i love concept of jcrew - pretty artistic colors with fun, preppy, slightly arty clothes. I also think they do a good job of picking models - they could be better thought - i always enjoy getting the jcrew catalogue because of their editorial like spreads...for me it is like magazine!

so, pretty young thing, why do you think it's ridiculous that a model's success is measured by their actual ability to make a living doing it?

this reminds me of the beanie baby scandal.
i'm not one to know, but for those of you that do: has a black model ever been featured prominently in the J.Crew catalogue?
Who thinks there will be weird Michelle Obama-esque photos like Tyra banks in Vanity Fair, but toned down a bit of course.
