Scene: I’m walking through the National Hall, looking for my stadium seat at Vivienne Westwood’s Red Label Show.
I have to make my way through a rabid pack of people who are not paparazzi. I’m not sure what they’re doing, or why they’re banded together, or why they’re all young girls.
Suddenly, I realize they’ve descended upon Lily Cole, not you know who, and they’re asking for her autograph.
If, or when, you meet your favorite model, or any model for that matter – would you ask for his or her autograph? We’ve never really understood the concept of an autograph anyway, but it seems all the stranger when applied to models. No one in the office would ever ask anyone to sign a piece of paper, though Natalie can understand asking someone like Kate Moss, who’s more rock star than model anyway and Carson (our new intern!) would just want to talk. When I met Kate, I kind of whimpered hello, and when I saw Doutzen I just gaped – they’re my favorites and yet I never thought about asking for their signature.
So if you’ve got anyone from Stephanie Seymour to Ali Michael in front of you, what do you do?

I simply gape and hope that they notice that I’m watching and smile back at me or some other kind of acknowledgment. I usually just try and take pictures of them when they’re not looking because I’m too shy/afraid to say anything to them…
Depending on the meeting circumstance (when, where, how, ect), ask for a photo!
take a picture! they’re models after all!
Take a picture with them.
I saw Gemma Ward once and I totally asked for a picture! She tried to downplay herself and thought I had mistaken her for someone else but once she knew I was a fashion student she took a picture with me!
i would definitely take a picture and risk looking like an ogre next to a model!
Actually, funny thing, I was at Angelika Kitchen and Ali Michaels was sitting right in front of me. Some old dude started a conversation with her and I joined in at times when she said she was looking for someone to rent her apartment.
i stood behind coco rocha for at least ten minutes trying to work up the guts to tap her on the shoulder and say hi and tell her how much i love her……… but before I could she walked away and I was sad for the rest of fashion week.
I was walking in Chelsea once, on the way back from an internship interview, when I caught sight of Coco Rocha, who was about to walk past me. I did a double-take since I wasn’t sure it was her at first, but when I realized it was, she looked my way, and I looked away and tried to play it cool even though I was totally “OMG!” inside.
I pretty much did the same thing when I saw Aggy in St. Mark’s a few months later, except it was super quick so I didn’t even bother to hide the fact that I recognized her.
same thing happened to me last season at nyfw, rickeyg303.
i would definitely ask for a photo rather than an autograph.
that goes for any sortof “celebrity”.
I came face to face with Kate Moss at a Kills show last year, was stunned silent. She sat at a booth ten feet away from me with both Jamie and Alison (the Kills), and I tried to send a round of drinks over to them but when I went to speak to the bartender I couldn’t get words out. Tres embarassing. But I’ll never, ever forget it.
Ali Michael? Do I really have to make a fuss for her?
I sat across the aisle from Christy Turlington at the US Open when I was about 10…
I basically ignored the tennis and gaped at her for most of the match. During a break I summoned up the courage to go ask her for her autograph (I mean as a kid, that’s what you think you are supposed to do when you see someone famous). Get ready to cringe…
…all I had with me was a copy of seventeen magazine (which she was not on the cover of), so I asked her to sign that! ugh… it still makes me feel a bit ill to think about it.
Tyra Banks…Personal reason. Only one I’d physically ask for an autograph from. I’d LOVE to get a moment to speak to certain other models tho.
