Revlon Hearts Mr. Sketch

revlon sniff nail polishes.jpgI’ve seen a lot of crazy beauty crap in my days. Fart guards, spray-on ab kits, press-on shadows - basically, nothing surprises me anymore.

Yet when Revlon’s April-launching collection of eight fruity-scented nail lacquers landed on my desk last week, all that practiced cynicism was replaced with a WTF. Nail polishes that become fruit-scented after they dry? Right. But since it’s my job, I went ahead and lightly painted my pinkie with the deep periwinkle Not So Blue-berry shade, then tentatively sniffed my nail.

I spent the rest of the afternoon compulsively inhaling my finger the way we all used to inhale Mr. Sketch’s grape markers in third grade art class, making the other Starbucks patrons around me very uncomfortable and giving myself one hell of a migraine.

At some point, while I inhaled the sickeningly addictive sweet, sweet scent of fake blueberries, I imagined the marketing meeting for this one: “So I’ve got this great idea. Nail polish you sniff. The kids’ll love it, providing they don’t get brain damage from inhalation.”

General impression: The colors are pretty, the polish goes on smooth, they didn’t chip easily and the scents are alarmingly addictive. No they don’t really fulfill any specific beauty needs, nor are they some groundbreaking development for the industry, but boy are they fun. And every now and then it’s nice to have a little bit of silliness in your routine. Now excuse me while I paint on the Mango and imagine I’m in Tahiti.

mmmm.

the funniest thing i remember about the mr.sketch markers, aside from the name, was you could always tell who had been sniffing too much and what their favourite scent was because there would be marker all over their noses.

Supposedly mid-April. Could be sooner though, depending on how and when the various drugstores decide to roll them out.

I already picked up the strawberry shade. I think they have a very sixties feel to them, but that could just be me.

This brings new meaning to the phrase "smell my finger".

I totally want these as well.

Mr. Sketch markers were the shit, except for the licorice flavor. Blech.

This isn't really new. I had a nail polish in like sixth grade that smelled like Heaven by Gap, and a few that smelled like blueberries and coconut from Limited Too. Delish.

i agree with commenter 8, this isn't new. i had a green apple limited too version that was clear (after many years in the drawer, it became a yellow-y tint, though).

why must you write such long posts about such silly things?

I had scented nailpolish when I was a kid!!! So yum. Not revlon, some wierd asian brand - probably full of a sh*tload of chemicals (maybe thats why my nails are f*cked up now?)

not new. they used to sell an array of scented top coats at "Icing" (omg does anyone remember that store?) back in '97. I was obsessed with the vanilla.

Oh god, this totally brings me back to grade school where i wore cherry-scented nail polish all the time. Definitely going to try these for the nostalgia alone.

That was almost exactly my experience with these! I put one color on each nail and got the blueberry not because it was the prettiest but because it smelled so great! I was sniffing that one nail all afternoon. I am now planning on going to get the papaya, strawberry and passion fruit because they were really pretty on and it went on really smooth. Thanks for your review.
