Would You Wear

Would You Not Wear Pants?

would you wear no pants stella ss09.jpgI am a big fan of short.

Come Spring/Summer, my dresses/skirts/shorts are as short as they can possibly be without causing a scandal. But even I’m thinking twice about the recent crop of pants-less pants.

Stella’s Spring 09 runway kicked off the trend (actually, Vlada did at SS08 McQueen). Her little suits and rompers are my dream version of office-wear (if my legs looked anything like Natasha Poly’s). Then, the pink and orange Marc by Marc romper sold out on Net-a-Porter within a day, even though it doesn’t have legs - just elastic bands and about a half-inch inseam. And last weekend, I seriously contemplated trying on these hot-pants at Urban, in navy blue, until I realized I’d really started to lose it. I have lacy boy shorts that cover more of my bottom.

— Sidenote: The office thinks I should note that I did once wear pink sequin hotpants in public for an entire night. But it was for a roller skating party and therefore I deem it irrelevant. —

But there’s a pretty consistent fashion trickle down. Starts with the runways - Stella, McQueen, Wang. Then hits the celebrities - Lady Gaga and Katie Perry ditched their trousers long ago. Then the high street - Urban, Topshop. And in no time at all, everyone from Reese Witherspoon to Williamsburg residents are running errands with their ass hanging out.

But will you?

For the good of all mankind, I will not be running errands with my ass hanging out.

No Prada kicked it off with SS07. You don't recall Miuccia's pantless turban collection?

i loved that prada collection but i think people have been going without pants on and off the runway for much much longer than that.
i don't think i would go for totally pantless-pants but i love short shorts, just long enough that there can be a bit of a cuff without getting cuff-crotch.

wait, no. i've gone out practically pantless many times; in the summer in my old neighbourhood, just to buy cigarettes coffee and magazines though, although that was pretty much all i did. hmmm.

At 21 yes. But at 26, I'm starting to re-consider how short I'll go. I used to run the show of mini (skirts &) denim cut-offs. But I could pull it off back then. Now, closer to thirty than twenty, not too sure i can still pull if off as well and I'm definitely not a fan of not dressing appropriately for age or body type.

The Marc romper is actually really cute, especially with a long cardi or blazer on top. I'm not secure enough in my thighs to wear it, but I think the blousey-ness is more forgiving than the URBAN SHORT SHORTS! MY GOD I almost threw up. Seriously, the ass shot makes the model look like she's an emaciated 80 year old woman wearing a padded diaper underneith! Please, take a look at the images for a laugh. I'm emailing it to all of my friends now!

In a word, no. The world is not waiting for me to appear with my ass hanging out, and wasn't even when I was 20.

Shorts over tights, yes, even if that isn't really age-appropriate either - but there's a difference between that and simple decency to the rest of humanity.

I don't understand this. People should wear pants. When is there an option to not wear pants? At the beach, or the swimming pool. Walking around in briefs, whether they are shiny or not, is not acceptable as ... pants!

I like short, but if it requires a bikini wax and its not a bathing suit, then I'm pretty sure I wouldn't wear it. I might run into my boss or something!

Why is it that men are never pressurized into having there ass hang out for fashion?

No, not for me. I have a friend who sort of pulled off wearing what was basically a leotard and no pants to a party. But it was that sort of party. And I couldn't.

Um, can someone please point out that this "lady gaga" did not start the leotard thing....I think Edie rocked it way better, and I generally think of her when I think no pants/leotard.

I do wear really really short shorts. But I'm 19 and have skinny thighs so I think its ok. Anyway, I balance it out with an oversized or drapy t-shirt. I find crop tops far more ominous than short shorts.

@ Glowingdoll, post #15, the reason why we men aren't pressured into that is because the male body isn't as appealing as a female's is. I'm sure if it was possible, there'd be guys in the Village/Soho doing it with no care in the world but right or wrong men shouldn't be doing it

"...because the male body isn't as appealing as a female's"

Yes, perhaps not to a heterosexual male but what the entire world seems to forget is that women are sexual beings too and that does mean that they enjoy looking at the male form just as much as men enjoy looking at the female form.

What, you think you’re the first 'philosopher' to spout that crap answer at me?

move over miuccia, my mom bought me my first pair of hot pants--actually part of a tomato red suit that included a long matching vest--when i was in the fourth grade. i believe i used to rock the look with a white ruffled blouse and white vinyl go-go boots. that said, my days of marching out the back door sans-a-pant are over. but if you got the gams, i say go for it!

I was just contemplating this phenomenon post-Britney Circus Tour where Brit did not wear pants the entire show (unless you wanna count her Jasmine-Disney-Princess-Harem-I-Dream-of-Jeanie "pants")and neither did any of the Pussy Cat Dolls with the exception of Nicole Scherzingnidjafdjkfjaorepwqurajfnjasfhewarphfewaosaler
