ice skater dress no seriously.jpgTo:Tips@Fashionista.com

Hi!

Thought this was strange and up your alley…

Remember the American Apparel Figure Skater Dress?

Well, this landed in my inbox today from Urban: Silence & Noise Figure Skater Tunic.

Kind of blatantly obvi, no? Thoughts?

Didn't Miu Miu do this like three seasons ago?

Uh, no.

American Apparel didn't invent that silhouette - pretty obvious if you read the name of the dress.

What the fuck is happening to this blog?! For your information, American Apparel did not invent the costume that ice skaters have been wearing to preform in, for ages. American Apparel makes t shirts... I heard Prada makes some as well!! Maybe they are sneaking into the AA studio and steeling all their ideas!?

i think the point is that urban is obviously trying to capitalize off the success of an AA dress. it is highly unlikely that they would both think of calling a little halter dress "the figure skater" around the same time and for it to be a total coincidence. also, it looks like this was e-mailed in by a reader, which is very interesting in an of itself, considering how many people commenters like to complain about how "no one" likes the copyright posts!

Knock-offs are a fact of the fashion world. You could write a different one of these every day if you felt like it, easily. Even 'new' silhouettes are generally inspired by things from the past, however far back. Not news.

Ahahaha.

It's a solid colored dress. How mind-blowing and original.

"i think the point is that urban is obviously trying to capitalize off the success of an AA dress."

Of course they're trying to capitalize off of it! They're a business- a clothing business, of course they're going to try and present a similar style to one that is selling really well for AA. Do you think AA cares? Doubtful.

Guest 4 is right. After "The Fiasco of the Chanel Bracelet" and the way they never respond to all the griping, I think these moronic posts are designed to raise their comments.

Very manipulative. Im going to ignore these from now on

They also have this one, which is more similar in fabric.

Personally, I prefer the Urban variation only because it has a better back. I never liked that the AA one is a halter, it's not flattering at all. But then again, neither is the dress itself, really.

I personally enjoy these posts. It's interesting to see the inevitable evolution of a fashion idea as it works its way down the food chain. It's kind of like Darwinism, but with high heels and something called a figure skater dress (which is hideous in any rendition). Anyway, the copyright posts always remind me of Meryl Streep's character's rant to Hathaway in the movie version: Devil Wears Prada when Hath comes within Streep's presence wearing a sale-bin blue sweater. Keep 'em coming!

First off, urban outfitters is notorious for ripping off ideas from well-known designers and not so known. That's one reason why they shouldn't be supported monetarily or written about here or anywhere. Secondly, for it's cool hipster image the man behind it who owns it is notoriously known to support super conservative politicians and causes. With money being so tight now a days, it's even more important to spend it on companies that care about human rights. So, I rather spend it at AA then at urban outfitters any day and so should you!

I wouldn't exactly say he was a sexually perverse pedophile guest 15. Clearly much of America agrees with his overtly sexy advertising, otherwise people would petition and it would be gone. And it's clearly selling clothes. We both know that. So maybe we should examine the fabric of our society before pointing fingers at others. Though I agree with you, he's definitely a bit of an amoral leech (sexually charged atmosphere my ass). . . but I'll take that over a super conservative wolf in sheep's clothing any day, any time. Seems like urban's so quick to gobble up whatever AA makes these days. Pretty lame on their part because it's so obvious to most of us.

This is totally a ripoff. Urban even has a "9 ways to wear" the figure skater tunic ad, which is a blatant imitation of the AA ones.

I work at Urban Outfitters and have always noticed this. It's so bad. Super recently, the company has been knocking off a lot of American Apparel's stuff. The only difference for me is that the Urban one will be cheaper with my discount, but I've always favored AA's color selection. Urban did have one made of black snakeskin that was pretty cute, but I decided not to purchase any of em.

This is my new favorite knockoff:
