Christian Siriano Toes the High/Low

christian siriano piggybacks on heidi klum.jpgIn 2008, Christian Siriano won Project Runway Season 4. Since then, he’s showed a couple collections, gotten his designs on celebrities like Tori Spelling, designed a line of shoes for Payless, and last week, Saks announced that they picked up his entire Fall collection.

This week, Victoria’s Secret says the petite designer’s created a limited-edition line of Very Sexy makeup to appear alongside Heidi’s.

The line will consist of eye shadow, eyeliner, lip gloss, a bronzer/highlighter trio, and a brush and bag, with each item priced a few dollars more than VS’s regular line of makeup.

Incredibly, no hair products are in the works, but more pressing, would you buy makeup from Christian Siriano/Victoria’s Secret?

I would! I feel like he has a good insight into the mind of a woman and what we might look for in a product :)

how much does he or any of these sort of celebrities that have make-up or perfumes actually design them?
he really just tells picks some colours and someone else uses creates them in an already existing product. instead of created i think a more apropriate term would be 'suggested(if even that) some new tones and put his name on it'
i think make-up and perfume should be left to professionals in those fields, i'm not saying there shouldn't be celebrity inspiration but for celebrities to actually have their own line of make-up...? i realize he designs clothing but that doesn't mean he knows anything about make-up composition, its a lot more than mixing colours.

i just barfed in my mouth imagining being a make-up expert who works on the victoria's secret line and having to meet with him and discuss his ideas. if his in put was that he wanted it to be 'fierce' i would throw acid on his face.

He has no talent! He just copies Alexander Mcqueen. You think as much as he states that he intern there.....he would try to keep it on the d.l. Due to the simple fact that his collections are so closely based on Mr. Mcqueens designs. Am I the only one the sees it? Anyways..Hell no he should not design anything till it is something original. Need I remind you Mcqueen did a limited collection for MAC at one point. He is such a loser, so over him. If he should design anything is a book about how to perpetuate every gay stereotype. But then...you cannot compile a book consisting only of "fierce" "tranny" and other gay coloquial terms.

I don't have issues with Christian. It seems logical that if he interned with McQueen, perhaps he possessed that particular aesthetic PRIOR to getting hired? And that that might be a reason why he wanted to/was picked to intern there? Aside from that, of course if he spent time there his subsequent work would be influenced by it. To say he's blatantly copying... seems like a stretch. (It was Kinley, after all, who was called out for copying McQueen's feather dress, no?)

Christian clearly works hard -- I say just let him do his thing, and if he's out there promoting himself and getting more work, good for him. (I mean, at least he's actually doing real work; his fame isn't just personality-related, unlike many other "celebrities.")

Im not going to debate his "talent" but I think its sad that if you asked an average american to name a fashion designer Christian's name would be right up there. I enjoyed the show when it was on but I secretly breathed a sigh of relief when I heard PR might not go back on air. Now that its back, God help us all.

@6 Im not a Christian basher, and while he does work, His fame IS just personality related. I can recognise his catchphrases easier than his designs

I actually don't think most Americans would say Christian. The PR alumni tend to fall through the cracks, imo.

I think most people would say Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Prada, etc. Definitely not Christian!

i think its really sad but i agree with #9 about if you ask people to name designers they will say louis vuitton, dior, chanel, gucci etc. they know the houses but have no idea who the actual designers behind the brands are.

I agree with 7 if we are talking about the average tv watching american as opposed to the fashion obsessed.
One of the papers had a feature on its website where you could rate all the slides from fashionweek as you looked through, resulting in a top100. When I looked Christian Siriano had three looks in the top10.

As for louis vuitton, dior, chanel, gucci etc most people know them for Bags, shoes, lipstick and perfume, which is probably just the way they like it.

Once when telling my country cousin about the designer I work for, she snarked

"Well if he is so GREAT,why hasnt he been on Project Runway?"

It's a sad day for fashion. Just goes to show you that unbridled attitude and shameless hype is the new Fashion Star. thank god I don't have to work with or deal with such nonsense. I won't disparage his good fortune, but......

I attended the launch event and got samples of all the products. While Christian might not have mixed and produced the actual makeup himself, the colors, tones, and packaging have his signature all over them. The colors are wearable (can't get enough of the Sublime lipgloss) and the quality is decent for the price point.

And, despite all the hype, I think he's actually a talented designer. I think PR painted him in the superficial light of reality tv. Had he had a more natural career path, there would be a lot less focus on his vernacular and a lot more appreciation of his work as a designer
