Flight of the Fashions

catherine deneuve for louis vuitton.jpgMaybe it’s because not long ago this time of year meant spring break, or maybe it’s that Vogue Italia spread we posted yesterday, either way, we’re dying for a vacation.

With a vacation comes outfits and the hotly debated question, “What does one wear on the plane?”

Every magazine in the world’s told us to wear comfy pants, head-to-toe black, boyfriend jeans etc. all covered up with a blanket posed as a scarf, but when we get to the airport we either see sweats or diamonds, with little in between.

Obviously an outfit’s partly determined by the destination, who’s waiting at the gate and probably the class listed on your ticket, but how do you decide what to wear on the runway? If you’re reading this you probably aren’t of the Juicy demographic and you can’t all be toting your magazines in a Birkin.

So, what are you wearing?

leggings, thin layerable tees (short/long/etc), a have this giant black & white flower printed scarf that I can use as a blanket/pillow/etc. in the plane or as a scarf wrapped around my neck purse or whatever. It's all aout the luggage- something I am slowly becomming obsessed with.

i would never go out in sweatpants, even when i lived in a dorm in first year university, or for jogging, so i wouldn't do that.
i try to be as comfortable as possible, nothing that will scrunch, nothing itchy, no boots, for longer flights slip on shoes.
i really hate flying so more important than what i wear is bringing someone with me to hold my hand and reassure me the plane won't open up and let me fall out.

train traveling on the other hand is totally different, i dress up as much as possible.

Black t-shirt dress with the right shoe can take you anywhere. Belt, layer with tights and chunky cardigan for cold weather. Or strip it all away for just the little dress and a strappy heel.

I wear jeans, a thin slouchy top, and a cardigan. Lately I've been wrapping a pashmina around my neck; they're nice to use as a blanket when the plane gets cold. For shoes, I like to wear my Toms. They're super comfortable and easy to slip on and off, for security and everything.

leggings and a tunic or shirtdress tend to work best for me. comfortable, without wearing sweats, and still cute.

this can work for most destinations and climates by varying shoe choice (ballet flats or sandals are my favorite travel shoes) and layering with cardigans, sweaters, coats... whatever you need.

i also tend to go really light on jewelry while traveling. i find it gets in the way.

I like to wear a fun, eye-catching dress with flats. It is always my objective to look like flying is effortless to me and that i do it all the time. Im never perfectly comfortable this way, but i guess i care more about how total strangers perceive me than my personal comfort when it comes to flying.

A simple dress WITH POCKETS* (pockets are my salvation) and either flats or easy-on-easy-off boots. Tights if necessary for weather. Trench coat that can be crumpled into a carryon if the destination or departure is colder than expected.

Lots and lots of chapstick.

*You may be mistaken for a flight attendant. I wore a navy wool shift dress to travel recently, and four separate people assumed I was a stewardess and came up to me to get flight info. It's like wearing a red polo and khakis into a Target, apparently.

I haven't flown in years. Last September I had a nine hour flight to USA. So I wore a pair of dark, rather tight jeans and a very light blue basic T-Shirt from H&M and a light knit vest. I was comfortable and acceptably dressed for a two-hour bus ride and finally meeting my host parents. By the way, I stopped caring for comfortable clothes years ago.

I usually wear a jersey maxi dress (cute, comfortable, and keeps my legs warm), flats and a cardigan. Plus a pashmina for a makeshift blanket when the plane is cold.

leggings, black high top converses, long shirt, leather jacket, large longchamp carry-on with my chanel bag hidden safely inside, giant gray cashmere scarf that doubles as a blanket (in fact it could probably cover the whole row)

Don't you hate it when your bag is like 3 lbs over the limit so you have to pull out all this crap in the airport and put it all on so you don't have to pay the fee?

So then you're walking through the airport wearing like 2 coats and a hoodie and a pair of shoes stuffed in your computer case and sandals in your pockets... haha.

That's usually what I'm wearing.

I really like that picture... and I really like this story. I feel like Carson always has the stories I've been replying to lately. I always want to wear a dress in the summer but have a problem keeping my legs crossed and my blanket from falling off when I fall asleep on the plane!! Also, I travel with my dog which causes a whole other problem.

I usually wear skinny black pants, a t-shirt and an oversized vintage lacoste cardigan with ballet flats.

However, last time I traveled, I wore some highwaisted harem pants, which were great because not only did they look cool, they were quite comfy as well!

I usually try to avoid scarves and shawls, because I'm worried they will get caught under a strap or something when I am carrying my luggage!

leggings, huge scarf, large jacket, very tight AA-type dress with over sized sweater thrown over( I HATE untucking my shirt and belt in front of everyone, once I started bawling at the airport after having to unbutton my pants-- never again), and my heaviest boots. basically- the heavy, bulky things that don't fit in my bag.

I like this questions. Usually layers. Comfortable pants, t-shirt, light sweater, jacket, cute sneakers or flats. Comfortable pants does not mean sweatpants, just pants that are fairly soft material and not too tight (ranging from nice jeans to dressier slacks). I always get cold so socks and pants are a must. If heading to warmer climes, I wear a tank top as the first layer and bring sandals and a skirt in the carry-on to change into at the airport.

depends on climate. colder: ankle-zip skinny jeans, a long tank, long cashmere cardigan, leather bomber, and flat boots. warmer: leggings (I can't stand the thought of my skin touching the airline furniture/plane seats), long tank, long cashmere cardigan, ballet flats. always always: huge scarf, huge sunglasses, sunscreen.

I just got back from NYC.
I wore my burberry polo with a gray piped with silver cardigan with jeans and some loafers. The cardigan was super light so it was perfect for the heat wave before you take flight and when the plane gets freezing mid-flight. :)

I love the idea of wearing dresses, but how easy is it to navigate the horrid seats in cattle-class wearing one? I'm tall, and my flights are usually long-haul between the US and Europe. As a result, it's a hopeless challenge getting out of my seat gracefully at the end. I like to dress well for flying, and I usually opt for a tunic-type top, slim pants, and a long cardigan/wrap thingy. I used to wear boots, but now opt for a good slip-on. I think it's really, really important to wear flat shoes that protect your feet when flying--I won't go into details as to why--but the earlier comment about wearing strappy sandals makes me cringe.

I do loads of travelling and wear clothes and shoes that are easy to go through security with. So no belts or bangles, no lace up shoes or boots. Nomrally skinny pants/slacks a t-shirt, a long sleeve shirt and cardigan. Im always freezing on the plane, so I always have a scarf. Best thing to travel light is leggings and button up cardigans, nothing bulky - rather just layer everything on if you are cold. For summer, cotton, cotton, cotton but again always with the trusty cardi and scarf.

I'm with 27. I a big believer in sturdy, flat shoes while flying. Also, pants. Plus, those are usually the bulkiest items that are difficult to fit in my luggage anyways.

I fly usually 3-4 times a month (but short, 1-2 hour flights) and usually wear Frye harness boots, cowboy boots or polo boots with leggings or dark stretchy jeans with a white tunic or tee, light cardigan and my leather bomber jacket.

I'm majorly coveting a steamer trunk right now because they look so chic but I'm worried it'll be too cumbersome to travel with. Anyone use one regularly?

I also travel at least once a month, usually more. I used to dress up more on planes. Now, I wear easy to take off shoes, heels or flats, nothing that can't come off fast. Socks because it gets cold in the plane and it's gross to walk through security with bare feet. No belt. Jeans, probably wide-legged for comfort. Any top that I can sleep in without worry. A shawl for warmth. Non-metallic jewelry. And finally, about 9 months of the year will require a coat (winter on the East Coast, cold nights on the West Coast in summer), so I wear it because it is too bulky to pack.

I agree, it's way more fun to dress nice and daydream about being some glamorous jet setter! Personally I wear loose clothing to be comfy and wiggle around, and absolutely no jewelry! Nobody's mentioned this yet, but I always wear booty shorts under my skirts/dresses so I don't pull a Britney in my sleep.

I wear jeans and a tee probably with a hoodie to keep warm. It sounds basic enough and it is but the last time I flew, I was heading into NYC so the jeans were an indigo wash, I had on edgy black boots and a fancy sweater/cardigan w/a tee underneath. I agree with whoever said the destination has something to do with it. When I flew home (to Ohio...shudder) I had on the same pair of jeans (only took that one pair to leave space in my suitcase for the shopping I did) a plain white tee and some sneakers.

I'm with #22, but it ALSO depends on the length of the flight. Short flights allow for more fashionable and less practical attire. A 2hr flight allows you to wear heeled shoes.
Boots that take up too much space in your bag mean you have to wear them on the plane!
I carry a big purse to put the scarf and thinner layers like a cardigan in for when I get hot. The tank top is always the first layer for the hot sections of the airport and always pants of some sort (but not sweats--I haven't owned any since college/grad school when I worked with small children.)

just got back from NYC and DC and I wore jeans (no belt), ballet flats (easy to slip on and off at security checkpoints), a cashmere top, a wool peacoat and a cashmere scarf. comfort is key and i also take into consideration airline security rules.

i always wear pants and covered shoes (no sandals!) because i read somewhere that in the event of an emergency on the plane, the less exposed your skin is the less injuries (or something like that). plus it gets chilly on the plane anyway.

For me it seriously depends on the length of the trip. The last couple flights I've taken have been 27 hours long and so I wore slim yoga pants, a soft tank top, cardigan, and ballet flats. For shorter flights I wear a comfortable dress (probably made out of cotton and with a little stretch), a cardigan, and flats. I've never flown in the winter time but if I did I suppose I would wear boots because they are my biggest shoes and that way they don't waste up space in my bag.
