Vogue's Mind Blowing Models

may 09 vogue model cover.jpgSo the new Vogue cover leaked, the much anticipated all-model one, and we’re trying to think of something nice to say.

Of course we love Liya and Natalia and Lara, and we’re kind of thrilled that Anna Maria Jagodzinska landed the actual cover. And their American Vogue Hair and rosy cheeks really is enviable - we won’t even touch on the subject of airbrushing except to say that it took us an extra minute to figure out that it was Jourdan Dunn in the middle.

But we’re stumped when it comes to any cohesive theme linking these women together. What exactly are “Faces of the Moment” and if Natalia Vodianova is one, what was she last year and the year before? None of these girls are new faces, none rose to fame this season, some are young and some are old, some are always in Vogue (Raquel, Liya, Natalia, Caroline) some aren’t (Natasha, Lara).

In fact, the only thing they all are is not American.

Are these the girls we should all be watching? Who do you wish had made the cover?

heidi mount!

i'm really surprised lara stone ended up on the cover (i.e. foldout). I had heard that one of the models had been dropped after appearing in a spread in Vogue Paris that Anna found "distasteful." Wouldn't this have been Lara and that S&M spread?

Also, I'm surprised Carolini didn't make the actual cover. She's obviously one of Anna's favorites.

There's some variation in these models, but you cannot tell it from the styling/makeup. It's like they all blend into one vacuous tanned blob of Giselleishness. Lara pops out of the spread, simply by being non-orangey.

Who I think the actual faces of the moment are: Natasha Poly, Lara Stone, Eniko Mihalik, Jourdan Dunn, Karlie Kloss, Anna Maria Jagodzinska, Liu Wen, Magdalena Frackowiak, and Iris Strubegger.

Obviously that would never be a US Vogue cover, though. US Vogue will never be VI or VP or even W, so I feel like it's a little silly to take them to task for not putting the actual editorial elite and new faces on their cover. No one was expecting them to.

i really want to know which model was pulled for being in a distasteful spread in Vogue Paris.

Since none of these girls are new I would have liked to see my favourites, Coco and Lily D.
It would have been nice to see more variation, if the girls didn't all blend together as much, as guest 4 said.

Maybe an Asian model or two. Hye Park, Du Juan, someone newer? They get lots of runway work but very little attention in Vogue.

Which models, exactly, do you consider "old"? What an odd thing to say. Is Liya Kebede deemed old because she's all of 31 years of age? I know that's a lot older than the average 19-year-old model, but I woudl hardly call Liya ancient.

ARLENIS SOSA! She's definitely the most buzz-worthy model of the moment.
Plus, she's landed Lancome, and other than Liya for Estee Lauder, not one of these faces has a big cosmetic contract in their midst...

When I look at this cover I get the same creepy feeling as when I see Barbie dolls that Mattel has tried to make look "ethnic" - i.e. everyone has the exact same face and bone structure with slightly different skin tones, hair/eye colours, etc.
Where is the variety??

Any idiot can find 9 pretty girls and stick them in a poorly composed and weirdly photoshopped pic. This was the cover we were all hotly anticipating??

The photo and its composition are so BORING. The point of bringing models back to magazine covers was to allow them to showcase their skills at posing and creating a beautiful shot all while showing off some enviable threads. This shot fails at all these objectives.

I'm happy with the models they picked for this cover, and glad they did not put any of the new girls. I know the title of it is a bit misleading, but the May issue is all about models, not about new models, but about what and who a model is/are. Does that make any sense? The models they picked are probably the biggest models to come out in this decade, all nine girls imo sort of define/represent this era of fashion that's been sadly more obsessed with celebrity then models. All nine girls careers (however ancient some of them may be)have done something groundbreaking and have proven themselves in this industry to warrant this recognition. These girls to me are of the moment, new and old, because in another decade from now, these are the girls we'll be talking about. The new girls will get their chance once they've proven themselves. But for now I'm glad US Vogue is celebrating the idea of what is a model.

If Vogue would feature different models more frequently, this wouldn't be nearly as big an issue.
