“When I think about doing my own line, I think Lagerfeld. Not so successful with his own line, but super successful with Chanel.” —Francisco Costa answering inquiring minds at his FIT talk.

i think he's just saying that it is risky to start one's own label no matter how notorious you are as a designer or how well the house you work for does.
i read it as 'if Karl can't create his own successful label, why would i be able to'
and i don't think his clothes are badly designed, i love what he does.

I think that is an answer that is somewhat soul searching. It's a little tough to analyze, except that Unlike Lagerfeld, Costa does not have the funds to produce his own collection at the scale of Calvin Klein and he would be under much greater scrutiny and criticism. That playing field
would be completely changed. It remains to be seen how successful his work at Klein is. Yes it gets press, but sales and the cost of it's produduction and presentation outweighs it's performance at retail.
