Would You Wear

Would You Wear (Faux) Boxers?

boxers we want, we love.jpgWhen Vivienne Westwood sent a model down her SS09 runway in those Union Jack shorts, we felt like we needed fancy boxers.
Then Teen Vogue featured ruched cotton shorts in a March editorial. They came in striped blues and reds, like bloomers, but with nothing over them. The credits listed Brooks Brothers so we went to the store and scoured the site until we realized the models were just wearing men’s boxers probably sewn by a handy Conde intern.
And today we saw these Current/Elliot shorts on Shopbop – basically fancy boxers even if they’re called “distressed denim.”
But we found a pair of pre-sewed-to-look-like-bloomers this weekend and no matter what we tried them on with – silk tank, plaid button down, white t-shirt – they still just looked like boxers. And while we’ll wear pretty much anything at least once and we obviously work in an office lacking any sort of dress-code, the idea of going out in men’s underwear just feels awkward, no?

Really guest 1? I agree with Fashionista on this – they are really cute, but really hard to pull of without looking like your walking around in your, or your boyfriend’s, underwear. The Current Elliot on ShopBop could work, they look to be a heavier material, you’d just have to pair with a structured well made top so you don’t look like a Trend Gone Wrong.
Also – along these lines – but tweaked a little – ‘track shorts’ are making their comeback and they are easier to pull of in my opinion.

Oh, also, I think Bloomies are really cute for lounging beachside, poolside, or couch side this summer. Just not for public places where you should be in actual clothes!! :)

the heftier the material, the more they are suited for non-bedroom use.
current/elliots: yes
others: no

ME NO LIKEY!
I mean it’s basically lingire as clothing. It’s one thing to wear a nice corseted top it’s another to walk outside in glorified underwear….Bloomers!

Miuccia had the guys wearing silk pajama sets not too long ago and I didn’t see one queen wear them here. Too bad B.E.D. closed.

isn’t it like the next grunge revival? in my junior high all the girls wore gap boxers and tank tops. we were totally cutting edge ;)

So cute! I think they would pair well with preppy polos or button down blouses (conservative and structured) and a pair of flats.

Think corset on top with cute mary jane heals for night, and a long cardigan and flats (or maybe chucks?) for every day. I also like them for the beach with like a cute bikini top!

I like it. It’s pretty lolita-chic and I find that endearing.
I think it’s more suited for girls with straight/narrow hips though.

I love this idea! I really want some but they tend to be extremely short, best suited for stick leg types :-(

I vote yes, but that doesn’t mean much since I do it for most everything.
But, I mean, look at how they’re done in the TV editorial; it’s louche, but the all the understated little formalities–the shirt collar buttoned to the neck, the crisp, bold collar, etc.–manage to keep things appropriate.
That vibe, plus catty eyeliner, plus red lips, Jessica Stam ponytail = deeeeelish

I bought a pair of the grey/white seersucker American Apparel bloomers, and so far have only suceeded layering them over sheer grey stockings.
You also have to pull them up high and use a belt to define the look. I wore them out and my designer friend proclaimed it “hot”, but I felt a bit naked… even with hose.

i really like them but not so much the american apparel ones. i love the way they are in the teen vogue editorial though, and completely agree with kelleyd’s sentiments.

this was a staple outfit for me in high school (7 years ago). as long as you’re confident(and possess some bangin legs), you can rock the “bloomers.”
