Adventures In Copyright: Don’t Mesh With Stella

mesh rip offs.jpgA reader sent us an outraged email this weekend.

She’s shocked and appalled at these pretty ballsy Stella McCartney knock-offs. The mesh basket sandals are this season’s hit and Bebe made sure their imitation hit floors in time for summer.

They’ve included three separate sections of mesh and the elastic heel band (which actually looks painfully uncomfortable in patent leather). And they’ve matched the heel height at 4 1/2 inches, placing both on angular platforms.

What’s different? Bebe thought they’d one up Stella and make their platform gold, which takes the shoe from sexy to tacky (a word we never use, but deem necessary on this occasion) in half a step.

I still think the Bebe ones are hot. Its not like it hurts Stella's business for Bebe to produce this shoe, the stellas are almost 10 times the price of the Bebes

I'd have to agree on this one and with guest 2. Bebe is just plain tacky.

every time there is an adventures in copyright post someone, or usually a lot of people say 'it doesn't hurt the business of the company creating the more expensive, original version'.
since when do only poor people like a bargain?
lots of wealthy people are frugal and if i think i can get the same thing for much less, why not?
just because i can afford to buy $1000 shoes doesn't mean i'm not going to buy cheaper shoes.
and then there also the people who can't really afford $1000 shoes but save up and do it because they are so obsessed with having a status symbol then they see the knockoff and realize they might be needing a loan for school if they go with their original plan.

i'd say those are a pretty blatant knock off, but i won't be buying either.

no 5 - I save up for a really stellar pair of shoes/clothing/bag etc when I know they are going to be something I will wear and love forever, or at least, a long time. But for something I feel is just a fad that I'll be bored of by the end of the season, I'd have no qualms with going for a reasonable quality knock off, since I wouldn't expect them to have the same lifespan anyway. So I don't think this would hurt the designers' bank accounts - instead the message to designers should be "stop producing flash-in-the-pan tat that is easily xeroxed by Topshop et al, and make something that is actually worth the big $$$". We need to stop deifying designers, and demand they produce something that is actually worth our hard earned cash! Too often, this is just not the case.

anyway, both of these are tacky. I remember buying something like these at least a decade ago for a school dance. at least the gold platforms add a nice, shiny ironic touch.

Why even bother ripping off Stella?
'Vegan' shoes are just plastic. You might as well spend hundreds less on Chinese Laundry.

I ~might~ consider buying a 'knock up' of her work that someone produced in leather.

guest 7, i agree.
guest 8, saving money is cool but if you are mocking 'vegan' clothing and its worth I hope you get eaten by a bear.

that made me laugh out loud (#9). The knock-offs are awful. but in my opinion so are the originals.

If you don't think knock-offs are hurting the designers' business, let me take you down to one of the many hidden stalls on Canal street! Darcykins, I think you're more likely to be eaten by a bear living up in those parts.

Have designer shoes gotten more expensive in recent years? I'll admit my only knowledge of shoe prices from 5-10 years back is from Sex and the City, but I remember on the show their shoes were always in the $300-$500 range. Now it seems like designer shoes generally sell for nearly $1000. Have they increased that much or am I just silly to be getting information from a fictional tv show?

I'm so over the mania for high priced designer stripper shoes Frankly, if you're willing to pay a grand to look like an expensive call girl, you deserve to get ripped off. And if you're buying the cheap version, at least you paid what they're worth.

I'm assuming the outraged reader must be like 18 and not remember this look the first time around. Looks like Stella did some knocking off of her own, you can find shoes like this by the dozen at thrift stores.

The Bebes actually look closer to the runway version Stella produced, except for that gold colored platform. They seem to be selling pretty well too, since the site only has them left in a size 10.

Yes they are blatant knockoffs but the Stellas are incredibly overpriced, especially for a shoe that is mostly mesh.

When I first saw both the Bebes and the Stellas, I thought one word: tacky. I don't think mesh can ever be made to be classy; however, if I were to choose one, I would much rather go for the Stellas. The Bebe shoes look overworked and overdesigned with the gold heel and the extra platform. It's just too much.
