An Open Letter to Intermix

balmain ripped off by marley .jpgDear Intermix,

We love you. We spent almost an hour in your store yesterday trying to find the perfect dress to wear to a very important wedding and we’ve narrowed it down to three. So don’t worry, we’ll be back.

But we do have a merchandising question. When one rack looks like this: black Balmain jacket, Balmain jeans, ripped-off Balmain jacket by a brand called Marley and the next rack looks like this: white Balmain jacket, leather Balmain pants and white ripped-off Balmain jacket again by Marley, what exactly are you going for?

Because as a customer (probably your target customer, less the desired clothing budget), we’re torn. It’d be hard to drop $5,000 on a jacket when you see something for $400 a mere foot away. But on the other hand, no one wants to buy the $400 version because the quality looks on par with Forever 21 when it’s sitting next to actual Balmain.

Do tell. Did we miss a retail secret along the way?

My guess is that they are under pressure to get conversions right now. The idea of the flashy expensive item to lure the cheaper purchase is a time honored retail strategy... Also, perhaps some people can't see the difference in quality!

i noticed this recently - you can DEFINITELY see the difference in quality

This is why most high end brands don't sell to Intermix. And as to why Balmain does... rookie mistake? Or desperate money-grubbing scheme which in the end hurts them by putting their clothes in these situations. Either way.

But yes, I make #3's comments my own--I've had enough of Balmain. Way to put on the exact same fashion show 3 seasons in a row, Christophe Decarnin.

I like how you talk about Balmain's "quality."
A few weeks ago, Kate Moss went out in a Balmain dress (which you surprisingly never posted about), which ripped all the way down the seams within a couple of hours.

What quality!

The dress Kate Moss wore was a runway sample, not stitched and meant to be worn in real-life situations. So it's no surprise it broke...

Marley is Intermix private label. It's terrible quality, but basically they knock off their own pieces all the time, and the fakes sell like crazy (anyone remember that suspiciously Herve-esque Privee banded miniskirt? Another private label gem). Very few customers buy the real thing--but they have to keep the people shopping, non?

It's a brilliant and devious marketing ploy. You feel good for shopping at a place that sells Balmain, get the Balmain "look" for a still-expensive price, and Intermix gets the sale. I hate Intermix actually. Would rather go to Barney's Coop.

how can something that costs $400 be of poor quality? what level of quality should our clothes be? how much should be spending on good quality? why buy clothes at all? shucks.

I think this is all hodge-podge! I love everything Intermix, and I think they offer something that is unique in the deisgner market: a way to mix high-end with mid or lower end designer wear! Because, let's be honest, who doesn't love spending a little less on an equally great piece, especially in this economy?

I know! I have the best strapless black dress from Marley; it is such a staple for me. I bust it out almost every weekend!

#11, the price you see in the store is the markup. If you knew how much it costs to make, it would make more sense to you.

Theory once had their stuff made in Italy. Then they switched to a Chinese factory, it all went to shit and they even have higher prices than before. Alot of brands have gone to China to get their stuff made.

If I'm going to buy something over $500, it has to be made in the USA, Italy, Germany, France or Japan. Even then, I always check how many threads per inch a garment has.

I think what's going on there is quintessentially Intermix: namely 'safe' fashion. Let's be honest, if we want to splurge on great quality do any of us actually go to Intermix to get it? No....we go to If, Barney's, Butter or god forbid even to Berg's.

I think they are simply relying on the old ploy of drawing the customer in with a designer trend in the flesh, then immediately serving up the "safe" (translation: 8% of the price for a trend that might make the wearer look/feel hideous and stupid when they pull it out again the following year) option within inches. Ye olde "bait and switch" I believe it is called...

But...I'm not into Intermix at all so maybe I'm just being cynical.

Ugh. Sometimes Fashionista commenters are exhausting.
In fact, #18, many of US go to Intermix to splurge on quality. Quite honestly, many people see no reason at all to pay Balmain prices or to have an item of "Balmain" quality at all.
As for mark-up prices... The Balmain jacket is also a mark-up price. To think that designer goods' prices don't often have an even more inflated price is ridiculous, and this is coming from someone whose family is in the business of importing clothing and shoes.

The first (and last) time I ever walked into an intermix store, I thought to myself; "wow, this is one glorified forever 21." Messy racks were tight, and they were all color coded!!! YUCK. Made all the clothes look cheap. Sorry.

I don't care what anyone says - I heart Balmain and I absolutely ADORE Christophe Decarnin! He's not afraid to have fun with fashion and although he doesn't take himself too seriously, he gets his point across.

I agree with the color coding comment. I hate all the clothes sorted by their color. Its even harder to shop than a department store. Scoop does that too and its terrible.

The merchandising at Intermix always confuses me and the staff can ever seem to find what they're looking for because it's located at nine different locations in the store.

WAY too confusing to shop there. The staff are snotty too.

Please READ PG. 6
(Do we need to say more)

February 9, 2008 -- ONE of the brothers behind fashion boutique Intermix is getting married today - to a staff member. Haro Keledjian, co-owner of Intermix with his brother Khajak, is marrying the firm's head buyer, Sari Sloane, at the Carlyle Hotel. Haro has dated Sloane, who is pregnant with his child, on and off for several years, but the two decided to make it official once Sloane told him she was expecting. "It was all very sudden," said our source. "Sari was dating someone else over Christmas and went to St. Barts with another man. But Haro lives in her building and they always saw each other. She broke it off with the other guy once she found out she was pregnant with Haro's baby. They wanted to get married before she started showing." A rep for the couple said, "Haro and Sari have been dating off and on for almost two years and have always planned on getting married." Brother Khajak, who also once dated Sloane, is among those expected to attend today's wedding.

Yes, they carry a few lines that aren't exactly premier designer and like most non premier designers they sometimes take their inspirations from others, but Intermix does carry alot of great designers like Fendi, Nina Ricci, Zac Posen, Matthew Williamson, Stella McCartney, Chloe, and Givenchy...all of which I love and do love shopping at Intermix for! Maybe it was a merchandising mistake, if you want Balmain then buy Balmain...if not, then you have options :)
