People Are Talking

Are Designers The New Celebrities?

proenzaschoulerboys.jpgThanks to Hollywood’s recent penchant for all things fashion - The Devil Wears Prada, Sex and the City, Confessions of a Shopaholic - names like Vivienne Westwood and Anna Wintour have made their way into the general public.

They’re in our tabloids, in Time magazine, on TV - with their own shows! - on 60 Minutes, and in Target gaining celebrity-level attention.

And now, thanks to Kiefer Sutherland’s violent head butting of one of the sweetest men we’ve ever met in fashion, and with the most delicate face to boot, everyone from TMZ to Perez Hilton to Taxi TV is learning how to pronounce Proenza Schouler.

And while the whole thing might be the most tragically ridiculous moment we’ve ever written about, it’s also going to push Jack and Lazaro over the ledge of hip beloved New York designers to international celebrities and that’s just weird.

Do you want to read about people like Chris Benz or the Vena Cava girls in US Weekly? Because we don’t.

Don't get me wrong- I love reading about anything fashion related. But, I agree, I don't want to read about designers in Us Weekly or any other tabloid. I feel like it would cheapen it all somehow.

I think that a little anonymity is good -- keeps the creativeness and perspective fresh.

Nooo, they can't exploit our wonderful world to the public; that would ruin so much of its intrigue/fascination!

I feel like a protective Mother over her children about this haha. NoNOno it would just be so wrong on so many levels.

The reason Jack's in the news is because the person who headbutted him happened to be Keifer Sutherland, not because anyone cares (aside from us, obviously) about Jack.

I honestly think, after this is over, that no one who didn't know Proenza before will know Proenza after.

What I wanna know is, what the hell was someone like Keifer Sutherland doing at an event like the MET ball?!

I love that the two big stories from the Met gala were Madonna's bunny ears and Keifer attacking Jack.

Multiple news outlets showed pictures of Lazaro instead of Jack. Before they can become celebs the media might need to learn to identify them.

What's the problem if Chris Benz appears in some crappy magazine like Us Weekly? Would it be a problem because then he would be more known to the general public? I honestly can't see any issue with that, knowing that if I like what he does it's because I find it interesting, how does the amount of people who know about him matter? It all sounds a bit like selfishness or prejudice to me.

proenza schouler is marginal and Keiffer is not. Who will get the big push from this nasty pointless altercation? My money is on the movie tar and not the forgettable and indistinguishable half of a tedious design team. Party with pigs and you end up in the slop puddle. It's that simple.
