Fashion Is Fun

I Want My MTV

cindycrawfordhouseofstyle.jpgAs much as pop culture invades every part of fashion these days, we’re not usually the go-to site for MTV coverage. But this WWD retrospective got me thinking about all the fashion-y things I’ve loved and lost on the once very stylin’ network over the years.

Of course, there were the awesome first two incarnations of House of Style which furthered my youthful obsession with models. Cindy was beyond. And I regularly dreamed about being best friends with Shalom and Amber.

But there were so many other style moments that seem to be missing in this era of Lauren, Heidi, et al. Perhaps because it’s hard to even catch a video on the channel.

Because its not like the entire music industry has lost it’s style, just that MTV kinda has.

I miss the days of Prince performing in assless pants, Michael’s sparkly glove, heck, even
Britney’s schoolgirl outfit.

Maybe I’m just being old and cranky, musing on the way things used to be. But don’t you think there was once so much more to discuss on MTV? I wish there still was, even in the internet age.

What are your favorite MTV style moments, good and bad?

Todd (Oldham) Time segments on House of Style, and actual music videos! Especially those by Bjork, Nirvana, Ice Cube, Snoop Dog, Madonna, No Doubt. The videos from the early to mid nineties all seemed to have a actual storyline and a specific style, instead of just trying to highlight an artist's awesomeness by using the soft lense and draping them in bling, snooze.

Good memories, all. 120 Minutes was amazing. And, yes, it was awesome that My So-Called Life lived a second life on MTV way back when. I'm still mad at ABC for yanking it after one season. But nothing will be able to take away my memories of repeatedly watching Jordan Catalano sing "I Wanna Be Sedated"

I missed the VJ's! Don't get me wrong, today's VJ's are good but there was an energy surrounding Nina Blackwood something about Nina Club, J.J. Jackson. Not to mention the personalities of Julie Brown & Downtown Julie Brown. They were all about the music and the culture....
Remember Club MTV and Remote Control....
where's the time machine when you need it?
