Kate Wins

kate moss dress of the year.jpgKate Moss’ black long-sleeved dress for Topshop was named Dress of the Year by the Bath Fashion Museum.

The UK museum has the world’s biggest collection of historical fashion and announced Kate’s award while unveling past winners, too. Marni, 2003, Prada, 2006 and a Giles Deacon from 2007 - all of which will be exhibited through September

The honor’s usually bestowed upon designers like John Galliano and Jean Paul Gaultier which means that even design awards are getting recession friendly. One of the judges explained, “2008 is likely to be seen by our children as a watershed moment - the end of a glittering party…Circumstances demand we become wiser now,” which we get.

And yet this is still fashion, and despite our endless love for all things Kate and most things Topshop, there’s no way that’s the dress of this year.

Not when people make dresses like this, and like this, or like this.

Obviously that can't mean dress of the year in terms of design quality, but maybe it's dress of the year in terms of all around wearability, appeal, and influence? I just read this book called "The Power of Small" and as odd as it might seem I really think that a place like Topshop getting this award is a powerful statement -- may seem small, even ridiculous -- but imagine how many people can feel better about themselves now that they can own "the dress of the year"...vs something unobtainable for most like a Nina Ricci gown...just saying

Those other dresses might be really fabulous, but my first thought about this one was "Where can I get that." And I don't know, I kind of like that they broke the pattern - it's more interesting to see which wearable dress is considered the greatest than so think about which amazing tenthousanddollar couture gown is the most amazing. A dress versus a creation.

(Seriously though, where can I get that. It's not on the Topshop website.)

i think its cute. maybe not dress of the year though, sounds like some sort of topshop ploy; so many of those are going to get sold that it will be hard to go out without seeing it and it will end up becoming the dress of this summer too.
or not.

That Nina Ricci dress is pretty bad ass- reminds me of an old school, gothic railroad of sorts. But I have to agree with the other commenters about the wearability factor. High fashion is great inspiration, but incredibly intangible to the majority of Americans. At the end of the day people want something to lust after, realistically save for, and then hopefully (and eventually) purchase. The Kate Moss for Topshop dress allows them exactly that.

So did she knock off a Biba or an Ossie Clark?

That's a cute dress, but not very "of the moment" or cutting-edge-- Biba or Ossie Clark is spot-on #11.

It does make you wonder, like with most contests, who the judges were and about their politics. (#2 had a very good point about price and reaching the masses.)

I adore Kate's own style choices and how she can look great in almost anything, but so far I haven't seen any dress from her Topshop collection that was very well made or that fit just about any body-type, etc.

That's exactly what is wrong with fashion now : the obsession with celebrities.
Publicity and PR took over design integrity and novelty.
As anybody aware of the Marianne Faithful style, Kate Moss sartorial ideas are not that original... Bless her.
