Adventures in Copyright: Roses Are Blue, Violent Are You

roses are blue violets are red.jpgEd. note/warning: This is an Adventures in Copyright post. If reading it will cause you to wish death upon us, please jump to the next post! xxB

Remember this Marc by Marc dress?

Yes, SS06 was a long time ago, but it was all over the press again after model Heather Bratton’s tragic death. (She wore it on the runway and it was the image accompanying almost every news story.) And now it’s back.

When we saw the dress at right on Nordstrom’s site (it’s sold out now) we thought it was actually the same dress. We thought it was weird that Marc was bringing the old print back after so long, but kind of cute because it really is such a great pattern and we really did love the dress.

But it’s actually by DKNY. Guess they didn’t feel the need to change the swirls of the roses, the size, the color scheme, the fabric, the price point etc.

They changed the sleeves though, that was nice.

Well, at least when Marc rips someone else's collection off, he picks something from say 20 years ago! lol. I'm thinking of course of his rip-off of Perry Ellis Winter 83 some seasons back--

39thandbroadway.com just had a great post from the designer perspective on the whole copyright issue. Lots of drama in their comments too! Its really a delicate issue.

LOL.

instead of just sending a snarky warning to readers, i wish fashionista would actually respond to their accusers! i want to hear your side! also, someone posted about how DIYs have disappeared... that's a pretty good observation, considering the whole copyright issue.

So now anyone who disagrees with/challenges Adventures in Copyright is "violent"?

Forgive me, but y'all are losing your grip on reality.

I can't stand people bringing up the DIY posts, it's not as if Britt is presenting her DIY collection to Nordstrom tomorrow.

It's a completely different thing to craft your own copy of the original then it is to purchase the commercial fake - because it's says to these companies that they're not-so-blatant forgery is an okay thing to do.

It's like carrying around a fake LV bag, just not so obvious. I mean don't you just feel like a filthy whore?

That's all.

And another thing I forgot to add (in my bitter rage) is that by making a copy DIY, you aren't contributing to further copies being made by large corporations by fueling their profits.

and If you're stupid enough to think people won't know your wearing a fake then you are a filthy whore.

But, if you wear something DIY, it will look creative and fabulous, and the worst anyone will think of you is that you're one of those women/(men?) that sit at home all day and make quilts and the like.

and everyone knows that all our friends have creepy little secrets like that hidden away, but it's better than being a tacky bitch i suppose.

That's all.

no guest 11. not all of you. just the ones leaving death wishes/threats/ideas which actually makes me worry about the state of the people leaving such comments, but makes my mom worry about me.

Most random idea ever. How about a 'bitch box' whereby fashionista poses a controversial question to it's readers and then allows them to well...bitch. Yes it's like cock fighting but instead of angry roosters we have fired up fashionistas... nothing malicious or intended to offend, just a place where people can vent a little- hopefully leaving room for the more positive and productive comments we all wish there would be more of.

I couldn't agree more with with austinsamuel and no.16.

The ratio of hateful comments vs. positive, and actually appropriate ones on fashionista lately is startling and Britt's mother should be worried.

This comes across to me as more of a fabric issue than a blatant copy. Some fabric company ripped off the flower pattern marc used and some dummy at DKNY didn't realize the similarity when they chose it. But who really cares? This shit is getting old, it's like when I worked at a bag company and every bag that looked slightly similar to the designs "ripped us off". Sometimes things are just coincidences.

I am so tired of reading negative comments about Fashionista. If you don't have nice to write, then don't write it at all.

If you're having that much trouble with comments on these types of posts, why don't you just monitor and remove the comments you deem inappropriate? Telling readers to "jump to the next post" is counterproductive, lazy, and condescending.

The DKNY dress is very sloppy and looks cheap. I would much rather by the MJ dress, even though I'm all for bargain shopping.

20, I completely disagree. I think it is great that fashionista doesn't censor comments. they used to monitor comments when faran was the editor, and if I ever corrected any mistakes in a post or made a comment that wasn't liked, my comment never appeared. although the comments section did seem less vicious then.

austinsamuel, are you calling me a filthy whore? that & your numerous grammatical errors aside, at least you're the only one who seems to grasp the fact that this is ENTIRELY about money. it's not about creativity or artistic integrity at all.
