Would You Wear

Would You Wear Slashed Leggings?

slashed leggings would you wear.jpgWe’re suddenly overwhelmed with the presence of slashed leggings.

They’re on the What’s New page at Shopbop, in the windows at American Apparel, at BBQs in Brooklyn and even uptown. We’re not really sure where they came from - a strange hybrid of the ripped jean trend, spring’s cut-outs and the not-going-anywhere love of leggings?

Our first question is, even if you’re skinny, doesn’t fat, or at least skin squeeze out of the spandex slits? Also, leggings are tight and uncomfortable post-40° weather so what time of year are these made for?

And how do the striped holes not rip into one gaping hole on the side of one’s leg? And are they worn as pants or under dresses?

So tell us, if you don’t answer to name Little J, are you wearing these?

While bold leggings are in, these may be too bold for my taste.

I always thought I drew the line at hot pants but I don’t think I could swing these either. I liked them at Rodarte for S/S RTW '09 though…

noooo I would not wear those. I think torn jeans are cool, like the ones from Current/Elliot, but they rip so easily. I think the torn tight trend is pretty bad too...

Those black ones are EVERYWHERE- forever 21, h&m, American Apparel, topshop, ect.. I prefer these- kind of the ripped look- without the risk of skin coming out- and you wont see 10 girls on Bedford ave with them on this Saturday.

I agree with Cassie on the ripping easily thing. I have the current elliot ripped up skinny jeans, and while i LOVE them, they've ripped a lot more since I've gotten them... I'm not sure how much is too much, and if they are supposed to rip more..thoughts?

1. I've tried the ripped leggings and unless you have legs that belong on a runway you'll look like a sausage trying to break free. 2. I agree with darcykins on the whole "My leggings are so unique no hbipster has them but I found them at Urban" thing. lol.

When I was at uni in London, I knew a girl from Bulgaria who would wear shreaded leggings under holey jeans. It looked pretty cool in that "I'm Eastern European and I can wear whatever I damn well please" sort of way, but I never thought this would catch on. Shit man, I knew New York is London 3 years ago, but is Brooklyn now Bulgaria 5 years ago?

I'm sick of seeing obese people, period.

Honestly, I would wear them to go out, clubbing, etc.
I'm lucky to have the legs for them, would not look like a sausage, etc.

And I like leggings. I like ripped jeans. I wear both trends.
combining them doesn't seem that wrong.

Again, nightlife wear is what I'd be going for. Wearing them during the day seems like...I'm working a corner? Or maybe the walk of shame.

I would wear them. During the day. In public. But in winter months. I live in Florida, and black leggings of any sort are really not an option if you're going to be outside or don't work in a meat locker.

i made my own with less slits and on the side, not in front. i used a looser cotton based legging rather than a heavy on the spandex kind. they're fun for semi-casual nights with a longer button down men's shirt. i'm in a band though. if you don't tend to the rock n' roll side of dressing in general you'll look and feel pretty silly in these, i think. plus, lots of perfect looking factory made tears scream "trying really hard to dress edgy and tough".

i have a pair that are just ripped in the knee, with another couple of small holes.it just kind of happened to an old pair over time, and i decided i like them.
like #18, i wear them with a mens button down or a flimsy tshirt dress with a cardigan.
i like how the ones i have look like a pair of old jeans rather than like the shredded terrors in the picutre.

Leggings are totally back for the fall tho...you just have to wear them in a more interesting way, instead of just paired with flats and a tunic.

love love love them!! david lerner makes the best leggings too btw.

i think that these are a great statement piece. you can wear them all summer (night only, tan lines could be tragic) and then just slip a pair of black tights under for winter! subtle slasher- hellooooo!

leyendecker makes great ones too- slashes on the side- also on shopbop!!!

I'm so sick of leggings. They were fine until girls started wearing them as pants. Leggings are NOT pants and you can't wear them with a t-shirt. I don't want to see your camel toe or ass.

I made some like Anja Rubik's when I saw this on the Sartorialist:

http://thesartorialist.blogspot.com/2008/10/before-balmain.html

.. and wore them pretty much the same way. They served me well .. however, I think they lost something in their present ubiquity and have been cozied up in the back of my underwear drawer for some time.

it looks nice, but it depends how you wear them.

you could look like a total slut,
or you wear it how it's supposed to be worn.

absolutely not. i have not seen them look nice even once yet. i like the idea, but they look too obviously bought that way. if i'm going to wear something ripped it's going to be grungy. i dunno, i hate them.
