B for Beauty

A Beauty Wonderland

annehathawayaswhitequeen.jpgThis afternoon the Daily Mail showed us the first pictures of the characters from Tim Burton’s film adaptation of Alice in Wonderland.

And while we feel that Tim’s cycle of remaking a classic in a quirky weird way starring Johnny Depp might be getting a little tired, there’s no arguing that the hair and makeup teams are doing some genius work on this set.

I’m kind of loving Anne Hathaway as the White Queen, perhaps because it’s such a very different Anne than we’re used to seeing. And I forever love a perfect scarlet lip with ultra-pale skin.

But from a beauty standpoint, this look leads us to ask the question: when you go from brunette to blond (a current topic of much discussion here at the office) do you bleach the eyebrows too, or do the more dramatic dark brow/light hair combo?

It depends on how dark your eyebrows are. Like Marilyn Monroe or Gwen Stefani they both have very dark brown eyebrows and that dramatic look seems to work. However if you're more fair skinned with lighter eyebrows you'd probably look better bleaching the eyebrows because otherwise you look washed out and less natural and ethereal.

I agree with #1. I'm naturally blonde but I've always had brown eyebrows; whether it looks natural or not just depends on the difference between the shades.

I'd say more power to the people that go for the dramatic as long as they keep in mind there's a limit. Isn't everything in beauty and fashion moving away from those matchy-matchy looks now anyway; manis and pedis don't have to match, patterns and textures in clothing are being mixed, we're even mixing our different season wardrobes for some amazing pastiche outfits.

That being said, if the difference becomes great enough between your hair and eyebrow shades everyone would be staring at your eyebrowns instead of your fresh new dye job, and that just sounds like a waste of a perfectly good hair appointment to me.

see, i always thought that bleaching out the eyebrow washes one out... but then again, if your eyebrows are pitch black you should brighten them up a touch.
this all really does depend on the overall skin tone/hair color/ current brow color.
can't believe i'm going to say this but my fave celeb hair/brow combo was Lohan's.

i love this look on anne, it totally works, as for real life, i'll keep my eyebrows and hair relatively close to the same color.

I am a natural "dirty" blonde (not completely blonde with natural brown low lights) and my eyebrows have always been brown, which always leads to people asking if it is natural. I don't really feel that there is a right or wrong answer to this, looks suit different people completely differently.

On a side note, I feel as though your posts are sometimes stolen right from the style.com "Beauty Counter," like this post and the post on perfume technology.

Actually I (along with many other bloggers I presume, as these photos were all over the internet) saw these shots on the Daily Mail's site where they originated today. And the perfume technology item was based on a blog post from Allure which was referenced and linked to in the item. xAbby

Good for you, for standing up for yourself Abby. I was going to blog about this too (because I saw the pictures online like 6 million other people today). Does that mean I stole the idea from fashionista, Molly?

She looks like Legolas' female counterpart... minus the quiver full of arrows.

i have naturally dark hair, like anne and once after bleaching my hair i tried bleaching my eyebrows to match.

I ended up colouring them in everyday because it looked weird having blond eyebrows, they were almost invisible with my skin tone and i felt like a freak.

No need to get so catty, etoilee8. I was simply commenting on a something i had noticed. It was obviously not the main point of my post, as I started my post off by contributing to the topic, and I even started my sentence off with "On a side note..." My intention wasn't at all to attack Abby, and I may be wrong but I really don't think my post had a negative tone.

Was this originally gonna be Lily Cole's part rather than Anne's? Or am I thinking of a different film? Manson's Phantasma or something?

You know a lot about catty, don't you, Molly? If you weren't trying to attack Abby, you wouldn't have posted such an accusation. (Or maybe you would have emailed her instead of putting it in the comment section for all to read). I love people like you that say such rude things (and yes, accusing someone of plagiarism is pretty rude) and then get defensive when someone calls you on it.
